Well that was interesting. Definitely the most "non-Valiant" Valiant Comic to date! And the most mature. Violence and sexual situations abound in this one.

A very cool start so far, and an intriguing new character in Axius. I'm very interested to see where this goes!
Good Morning, that's a nice tnetennba.

Am I reading too much into this, or did Ryp throw in some Game of Thrones likenesses into this book...

Dark and mysterious! Monsters and manipulations. Just what I like from a Valiant book.

I loved this! Dark, adult, psychological. Mystery, mysticism, and machinations. Plus Ryp does an amazing job. Love all the innuendo and nuance in his character's expressions.

Absolutely loved this issue, even though disconnected from rest of other Valiant Comics still felt very much part of it in tone..Plus finally Milligan back in form after the *SQUEE* that was his Shadowman run..

Pretty sure the Orkus skull cave in Etrusca & the crazy living animal/monster gaping jaws cave in Brittania are portals to the deadside, but other than that it was very free & clear of any Valiant universe ties... And I loved that. Milligan incorporated a hell of a lot of cool historical references into this without making it feel like it had to be perfectly historically accurate. A fantastic backdrop for the main take happening.

And as always, the art by Ryp kicked a$$!! :thumb:

Oh, and only fair to mention - KXXX, aka Softy on VCR thought that the Codex could also be an early form of the Book of the Geomancer...

Loved it. The darkest, most violent, adult comic Valiant has done yet; and it rules. I suspect those are portals to the Deadside as well, good call. I can't wait to read more.

excellent book! Loved the historical tie ins, the violence was on point, interesting twists. I am very curious to see where this will take us!

Seriously, I have started taking notes on the books I read, then listening to your show to see just how close I come as well as coming up with different theories. It makes this whole comic thing more entertaining to me, like "The Talking Dead" does on TV

In a nutshell this was a damn good book. It's intelligently written, with an interesting art style, and a story that appears to be going places. I got a real Rome meets Cthuluu vibe from it somehow and love the idea of a Roman detective type as I can see a noir style seep into every thing else. I would highly recommend it. This is the most ... mature... title in Valiant's stable thus far and I hope it will catch on with all of us older fans.

I hope it does reaally well. I love Faith, but i don't want her to define the future direction of V because her book is selling. This *SQUEE*, this is Valiant baby.

I agree I really hope it takes off and shows that serious, dark, adult comics have their place and can sell just as well as the spandex clad funnybook characters. Comic books can cater to all sorts of genres and mash ups; super heroes are fun but can be limiting.

With that said I have to try out Faith. I haven't gotten into that one yet.

Absolutely Excellent. Some of the best Milligan stuff ever. A former centurion, Vestals' agent, Roman detective underthe Mad Emperor's orders and his friendly briton slave. I imagine the "villain" is somehow connected to Nergal.

You know, I wasn't even thinking that far along about it until I read your post - I guess I was automatically assuming a Geomancer would only have ties to Gilad, and therefore wouldn't be involved with Antoniis like this.

BUT...

If the Vestal order (or even just the woman at the head of the order) is tied to or one is of them is actually the Geomancer for that era, and the scrolls are an early form of the BotG... Then what are they/is she really up to? Why not send Gilad into Brittania to deal with whatever that gaping maw thingie is?

Maybe there is something more sinister going on. Maybe these Vestal Virgins are like a dark Geomancer cult, or perhaps they gain power from the Nergal Death Cult somehow instead. :hm:

Doesn't the BotG precede Rome by millenia? We saw it's earliest form at the end of Legends of the Geomancer, yes?

Yeah, you're right on all counts I think - I can't recall offhand if it was depicted as a book, or scrolls by the end of Legends though. Also, scrolls & books etc were often copied by various religious Orders in medeival/ancient times.

I could see this Codex being a copy of the book made perhaps by the Vestal Order, who might have discovered its existence at some point... And if they had as much power & influence over the Roman Empire as legends would indicate, it's not much of a stretch to think they could make that happen.
