Valiants on eBay

I was considering bidding, but way less than this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/272093665182?_t" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... .S1.R1.TR1
If you're not a *SQUEE*, you're okay with me.

That one worked. Pretty strong prices for those books.

Surprising, really. But he states they're 9.6 - 9.8 so I'm guessing the condition.

Yeah, the bidding tonight on a few lots went a lot higher then I expected. Not sure if it's new blood in the market or existing fans desperately trying to fill in those last missing books in their collection.

The prices on some of these lower print run variants is already pretty high, if the movies take off just forget about them.

What is the print run like on those early variants. I know a bunch are 1:20 but didn't they print more than 1/20th of the print run?

The word is that they printed at least 1000 of everything in the first year.

Hey Guys,

I won that Harbinger lot. It went for way more than I expected, but I wanted the first appearance of Darpan, Livewire, and Hard Corps in the variant form.
The X-O set was a much better deal, but the Harbinger lot in 9.8 condition has much more room for appreciation, in my opinion.
I never see these Harbingers for sale, so I figured I had to do what it took to get them.
I had strong bidding from three other people, so others must have felt like me.
I will be sending them to CGC for slabbing if they pass my eyeball test. I will keep the board updated on the ultimate outcome.
It was the condition listed that made me go that high, and the scans looked like they backed up his claims.
Besides, it is a fellow board member, and that always makes it easier to bid with confidence.

Thanks,

Ed

The Livewire issue was why I was eyeing the lot, but my max was something like half of the winning bid. I wonder if it is generally a good idea to sell books that have a smaller fan base relative to Marvel and DC in lots that contain multiple keys, in order to increase interest.

I view some of these prices as bargains, especially if you find the retail price of these books new were:
1:10 - $10
1:20/25 - $20
1:50 - $50

I think if you look at the general collecting market going to realize that cupel to garnering a lot more attention because they are hard to get. And the longer you wait the harder it is to get them. With more people coming in and less people selling them I think we're going to see higher and higher prices for things. Honestly I haven't been surprised by any of these closing auctions yet. But then again that's just me, and I don't believe that we've even seen the ceiling yet.

I'm just glad I bought an extra set of those Harbinger Wars variants when they first came out (at a song back then), plus a few extra of the regular issues. I wanted a bit more from the story in that series, but a great story nonetheless.

I was looking at the HW #1 1:50 variant, but again, way more than I was willing to pay. I was a little surprised at the final price of the Summer of Valiant TPB (I don't think I included a link for that); over $60 for essentially a bunch of reprints. I think I have an extra copy.

Agreed - I think the thing with the Summer book is that it said it was 9.6-9.8. That book is especially condition sensitive. If in fact it is that good (who knows!), then it was probably a good buy. I got the Archer lot, and we'll see if it is 9.6-9.8. If so, I'll be super happy.

I think that's what I paid for the Summer of Valiant TPB a couple years back. It was a bit tough to find (at least at the time).

The summer of Valiant book is going to be quite hard to get in high grade. It came out before the trade paperbacks if I'm not mistaken and was really limited as it was not released anywhere but conventions. I think that's going to make it one of the very rare hard-to-find early pieces of valiant history. I think it's more people realize that the demand for that book is going to rise quite a bit. I think I would put the XO man-of-war card by Rittenhouse, and those special prints of the Archer and Armstrong variants. They were all released back in 2012/2013 so I think that a lot of newer fans don't even know they exist yet.

You nailed it, Steve.

I was fortunate enough previously to have garnered one of (still) only two existing CGC 9.8's of that book; it is stupidly condition-sensitive, primarily due to chewed up and/or torn top and bottom spine corners. I went through a hella amount of copies to finally locate a NM/MT candidate. I'll likely not find another.

And, I was the second highest bidder on this copy that just sold, and I would've gladly paid more for it, but I was off-line for the majority of those books closing times. IMNSHO, this book should NEVER sell for less than right around $50 for a NM copy; a NM+ or better copy, drastically more so.

Regardless, I still ended up with six of ying's books, so we'll see what's what when I finally have 'em in-hand. I have to admit I'm a bit surprised I snagged the Shadowman #5 1:125; definitely expected that to go higher, but I'm definitely not complaining. Same on the A&A #25 1:50. Honestly, I absolutely hate that cover, but it's a *SQUEE*in' toughie to track down, let alone in premium grade, so again, not complaining. Guess I'll know for sure in about five or six days, so we'll see...
