Ninjak #3 Discussion
I really liked the book even though there wasn't much advancement in the story. Great action and amazing art. If I have one gripe it's that the technology Ninjak has at his disposal is getting a bit far fetched even for comics. Hacker hands that are preprogrammed to move his fingers for him? Seriously?!?
As for young Collin...I almost got an APD vibe from this issue. Last issue he poisons the butler, who we assume has been abusing him based on the previous issue. This time he blows the car up in his face. Part of me thinks he's just a psychotic little kid, now, who perhaps the butler is trying to contain. Just a thought.
I like where the Lost Files are headed.

I have to agree with you on all of these points. I like the slow progression as this series seems to currently be a character study for Ninjak.BugsySig wrote:I really liked the book even though there wasn't much advancement in the story. The lost files are amazing and kind of make me want an anthology series to flesh out more of the past for some of the characters.
This is what happens when you try to work...

Yeah, this issue took place in 8 minutes. Talk about decompression.BugsySig wrote:I really liked the book even though there wasn't much advancement in the story. Great action and amazing art. And yes, the technology is getting ridiculous. Contacts that allow him to scan a building's internal wiring? Pre-programmed gloves that can hack a computer network? Too far. Just plug some dopey gizmo into a USB port and 'by-pass' security or something. I'm willing to swallow an AI guided grappling hook because hey, comics. But his technology is like something from 4001, not 2015.
Overall though, pleased with the issue, great art. Mann is perfect for it. But short on story on all gee-wiz technology.

The tech is far fetched but... Enjoyable. It makes you smile and laugh. Kindt once said that he was like a teenage boy mixing spy with ninja. I like it.
Overall I'm really enjoying this series. Prob re-read tonight.

I like the new tech. At least there is some thinking and rationale behind it. Part of the fun of spy movies is seeing this crazy tech in action, some stuff you would never think of. And it's a funnybook with a "mutant"/psiot whatever that uses her hair as razor wire; so I'm fine with it. I think Ninjak should have all this crazy tech to help him perform these impossible missions. I loved the part about angling his body to take the blast from the gun. Just cool spy crazy nonsense. I dig. I'm a big 007 fan as well though.
And I like the emotional resonance of the "lost files". It gives Ninjak a little humanity, shows he isn't a completely cold killer. He's gots a heart...awwww...

Great, not sure how I missed that info. I agree 100% about Sorrentino, I wanted so bad, for him and Lemire to be next creative team on Shadowman, when Valiant brings him back from limbo. When it was announced he was Marvel exclusive, it made me sick to my stomach, imo, he's the perfect artist for Shadowman.hkupo wrote:Clay Mann is exclusiveagent_graves wrote:Ha, he got caught... I'm a Bond fan, too, and this appears to be headed toward the feel of an updated Roger Moore Bond film. So I'll try to view the book in that light going forward.QUARTZ wrote:I like the new tech. On the issue itself I felt there was a disconnect between how Ninjak is portrayed in the first page layout and how he is during the stories. In the 'classified' he paints a picture of a detached and violent sociopath but then Kindt has Ninjak's internal monologue constantly making a point of being non lethal. They somewhat clash for me.

I'm enjoying this one. The outlandish tech to me is a lot of fun and a bit humorous (in a good way). Excellent art by Mann. And I'm really digging the backup story as well. Nice double-feature.

Bendis excels at gritty solo series, so I expect Old Man Logan to be better than his team work. I'll check out an issue or two. He did write my first comicbook, after all.hkupo wrote:Not only that but he's attached to Bendis of all people.agent_graves wrote:Great, not sure how I missed that info. I think that's intentional. The assessments of Ninjak appear to be those of his bosses, or maybe his enemies. Either way they miss the point of his demeanour existing to hide his heroic nature, because that would be an easily exploitable weakness. Which makes sense, I think.
Also, anyone think it's weird that Ninjak being a mercenary has pretty much been dropped? They need to explain the nitty gritty of his working status.

Re: Ninjak #3 Discussion
The tech is definitely over the top and eyeball roll inducing at times ... But it is also fun - and I'm willing to suspend disbelief a bit more for a little bit of fun. So I am ok with it.
Divinity seems to be getting the hype .. But this is Kindt's current best work with VEI. Kindt set out to make a great ninja spy thriller ... While also creating a compelling character study and it's been pretty much executed perfectly so far.
It also helps to have Clay Mann on art.
Wowzer
The art is stunning. This is some of the best art VEI has ever put out. This is brilliant work. The panels just pop beautifully - wonderful coloring.
Butch Guices work on the lost files is also very strong. It perfectly fits the story. And seeing a young Colin King ... Fall into the human "weakness" of being love sick ... It's nice to see the character vulnerable ...

Maybe because of his personality disorder + advanced intelligence - he caused the death of his parents. (I'd go with reckless accident..)
Maybe as a dying wish, the Butler was asked by the parents, instead of having their son locked away, to try and control him by any means necessary - control his anger - modify his behavior..etc.
That would definitely be a great twist that subverts expectations about a superhero origin. (Although Dexter-esque in a way)

I sort of agree on the pre-programmed gloves, but I thought all of the other tech was pretty clever. High-tech contact lenses are not ridiculous btw, check out this article:jmatt wrote:BugsySig wrote:

I think Kindt is actually being pretty forward-thinking with this tech. Even that AI-guided grappling hook initially seemed a bit silly, but considering the ubiquity of drones nowadays, it makes sense to put that tech into projectiles like grappling hooks as well. Personally, I'm ready for a whole slew of ninja weapons that look traditional but have all sorts of sci-fi tech built in.
Also, they haven't yet mentioned anything about Colin's upbringing, correct? In the '94 version, he was a product of some genetic enhancements as part of the remnants of a Nazi program "Schwarz Tod" I think. It would be pretty cool if Kindt maybe changed this instead to that Russian fringe-science division that was mentioned in Divinity, they really need to give that division a snazzy name.
Re: Ninjak #3 Discussion
Knowing Kindt that snazzy name will be something like D-Vinity or Project Divine or something. Definitely. I'm guessing since his last name also consists of a dictionary word ("kind") ending with a consonant, maybe he's just always looked at words in a unique way.dornwolf wrote:Knowing Kindt that snazzy name will be something like D-Vinity or Project Divine or something. A fun issue, although a quick read. The gloves were the only piece of technology that caused me to wince, but the rest I was fine with, and I was pleasantly surprised by the last page. Overall, good stuff.

Re: Ninjak #3 Discussion
Well, again, we have the disconnect on the first page between the tech of his battle boots and the personality insights alongside them. I hope these are reprinted in the eventual TPB.
This issue was fun, the tech is a bit outlandish but the tension of the story and Kindt's inner monologue for Colin make up for that. (Although I have to ask, where does he get such wonderful toys? Does Colin create all of these gadgets? Or are some from Nelville and MI-6? Q anyone?)
The Lost Files just got really interesting. This book is growing on me.
