Top-10 Most Valuable Valiant Comics
I'm putting together an article that will (hopefully) do a credible job of identifying the TOP 10 MOST VALUABLE VALIANT COMICS.
While, yes, I COULD just look at the Price-Guide and go from there; I believe that there is more to consider and would much rather hear ideas and/or opinions from the VF community.
Even once this article is finished; there likely will be some debate. Debate is good, as it keeps things passionate, keeps us honest, and it keeps things moving.
Please post below.
List them however you like. More data is good data, so please, if you have price and/or value that you know of: POST IT.
This list assumes HIGHEST KNOWN GRADE.

Re: Top-10 Most Valuable Valiant Comics
Interesting list. There is a Magnus 0 9.9, not sure if it's with or without card, but it is valuable. Then there's the bound Unity volumes. Not technically individual comics, but usually mentioned on lists like this. How about the Diamond signed CEAR, does that exist in high grade? X-O 1/2 gold and Valiant Vision 19 both used to be valuable, but have gone down in price. A few other VVSSes might make the list.

Re: Top-10 Most Valuable Valiant Comics
If you guys like, the list could also be broken up into VH1, VH2, etc.
I'm interested also in the super rare, like GREG's CGC 10 RAI #0 or the CGC 9.9 UNITY #0 RED mentioned. Those sort of books are CLEARLY the types of books that might be listed here.

Re: Top-10 Most Valuable Valiant Comics
The potential values I am listing are clearly NOT accurate, but rather an attempt to guage possible selling prices. PLEASE correct me if they are way off from what you know to be true. I'm basically multiplying 4x-5x 9.8 value for a 9.9, and 18x 9.8 value for a 10.
If there is a more accepted way to work this, please let me know.

Re: Top-10 Most Valuable Valiant Comics
Considering the recent news, some of these may go for even higher than listed. I'm already seeing Eternal Warrior #4 for about $25 in NM condition though accepted value remains at about $8-10. I imagine a CGC copy to start to quickly climb.

Re: Top-10 Most Valuable Valiant Comics
Greg,
Some of these listed sales though (e.g. HARBY #1, SOLAR #10, and A&A #0 Gold) have significantly decreased in recent years. I suspect certain rare key/gems might retain value a bit more (SMOTA #10 CGC 9.8 SS; RAI #0 CGC 10; HARBY #1 CGC 9.8 SS; BS #0 Plat) than some of the older sales of books that have decreased.
You are THE RIGHT guy to ask. What is YOUR hypothetical TOP 10 based on past sales, sales trends, and potential sales/speculation?

Yeah, those early slabs have decreased significantly as the number of graded books continues to increase. Even a Harbinger #1 9.8 can be had for $325, whereas it was regularly selling at $400 a year ago. I think the clincher on a price increase would be a movie announcement. I think that would send Harby 1 higher, and possibly much higher.

Re: Top-10 Most Valuable Valiant Comics
You're definitely right that a lot of these prices were the top of the curve, so they most likely won't be going higher anytime soon.DirtbagSailor wrote:Greg,

You are THE RIGHT guy to ask. What is YOUR hypothetical TOP 10 based on past sales, sales trends, and potential sales/speculation?
I'm a little confused by the intent of the list:
Top 10 Most Valuable Valiant Comics
- that can be purchased by a collector today? (That rules out most of the unique (CGC 9.9 or CGC 10) books)
- that still retain a value close to their all-time high? (That rules out some more of the list)
Assuming we're making the list for a hypothetical new Valiant fan (who has lots of money to spend), the top book would be:
Bloodshot #0 Platinum
After that book (which does have 15+ copies in existence, so it's at least possible one could be purchased fairly quickly), we either need to look at the classic "key issues" which have first appearances or important story aspects, or we need to look at "limited editions" which are usually just important because they're limited editions.
There are a few books in Valiant that combine both of these (first/important appearances and limited editions), in particular: Archer & Armstrong #0 Gold, Unity #0 Red, and Harbinger #0 Pink.
Archer & Armstrong #0 Gold was limited to 5,000 copies and contains the first appearances of Archer & Armstrong. Hard to argue with that combo.
Unity #0 Red was limited to (probably) 5,000 copies and is the first chapter of the "story that made all prior Valiant books skyrocket" the 1992 Unity storyline.
Harbinger #0 Pink was a special coupon redemption issue, 3,500 were redeemed (probably more were printed), as well as an origin story.
After those 3 books, you get into the "must have" issues for first appearances:
Harbinger #1 (first renegades - Pete, Kris, Charlene, Faith, Torque)
Solar #10 (first Eternal Warrior, first geomancers)
X-O Manowar #1 (first Aric, first X-O Manowar class armor)
Magnus #5 (first Rai)
Now... I'm not saying that ANY of the first appearance books above are more valuable than a book like the Chaos Effect Alpha Red variant, but when we ask "WHY" is the Chaos Effect Alpha Red (CEAR) variant valuable, we don't talk about the first appearances, or the importance of the story... we talk about "it's low print"... or "it has always been hard to find".
Yes, supply and demand are the reason that things have value, but the first appearance of the Harbinger kids is a major demand (if anything in Valiant is going to have major demand) and the supply is probably 20 times higher than the supply of CEAR.
As a result, Harbinger #1 costs much less than CEAR... but the reason that CEAR is valuable is not unique. It's not even unique for Valiant anymore.
There are probably already dozens of VEI books that have a lower print run than CEAR.
So --- we can list the Valiant books from the 1990s that are hard to find, and they currently have the highest values, but they aren't necessarily IMPORTANT Valiant books.
I actually own a CGC 9.8 Turok Evolution EB Games variant. It's probably worth $500 or so... but there's no way I would say it's as important to Valiant as a CGC 9.8 X-O Manowar #1.
Ultimately, I hope that the top Valiant books will be in demand because they're important, not because the supply is low.
There are lots of comic books with fewer copies in existence than Action Comics #1 or Detective Comics #27. They aren't more valuable because --- somewhere along the way --- what was IN the books became the most important factor.

Greg,
I completely agree. For this particular I want to focus on potential value today (for example, if you and I were to agree on a deal for Rai #0 CGC 10, etc). Odds are no, but the value of that book is still quite real.
I think that another article should also be written, perhaps next week even, where the MOST IMPORTANT Valiant issues are discussed.
I would like to a.) write to the buyers and/or investors, and then b.) write to the fans and/or collectors. Two separate articles, and possibly third and/or fourth that covers VEI more specifically.

I wouldn't sell the CGC 10 Rai #0 for anywhere near $1,500.

That book has "sentimental value" that I don't believe anyone would be able to monetize.

First of great post Greg, and good thread Jesse!
now that being said I would add are we making this list for new readers? If that's the case shouldn't we be focusing more on VER I rather than past valiant? The ideas to get them excited about this universe and the things that are going on now. So I was just thinking that would be a very different list. I mean obviously if the list is for this board then I would say include everything, but if it's going to be for new fans who are just on the Facebook group or only picking up the new trade paperbacks then I would say it would have to be VEI.

I look at it more like the Guardians of the Galaxy situation.Ramses818 wrote:First of great post Greg, and good thread Jesse!now that being said I would add are we making this list for new readers? First appearance of Groot was Tales to Astonish #13 from 1960.
That comic has nothing to do with the Guardians of the Galaxy movie --- it was basically a "throw away" character for a single "tale to astonish", but it is now a key issue due to the success of the movie and the current line of comics.
Valiant has its roots (or should I say "groots") in the 1990s.

New character first appearances will likely be collectible from the VEI books --- at least the most limited variants of the VEI books --- when they are completely new (Bleeding Monk) or so different that they're basically new (Livewire).
If we're talking about new fans just wanting to READ the new Valiant books, then the value doesn't matter. They can pick up the trade paperbacks or get the books on digital without thinking about them as collectibles.

As for Rai #0, it's the only one, so I completely get it, lol! However, I suspect that $1,500 would be a possible eBay auction ending price. Of course, by this time next year?

Someone other than me should try to guess the hypothetical eBay ending price. I wouldn't be allowed to bid.DirtbagSailor wrote:As for Rai #0, it's the only one, so I completely get it, lol! However, I suspect that $1,500 would be a possible eBay auction ending price. Of course, by this time next year?

I want to also do something similar for VEI.Ramses818 wrote:First of great post Greg, and good thread Jesse!now that being said I would add are we making this list for new readers? If that's the case shouldn't we be focusing more on VER I rather than past valiant? The ideas to get them excited about this universe and the things that are going on now. So I was just thinking that would be a very different list. I mean obviously if the list is for this board then I would say include everything, but if it's going to be for new fans who are just on the Facebook group or only picking up the new trade paperbacks then I would say it would have to be VEI.
AND, I want to take the discussion and opinions of this group here to do it right.

Rai #0 in CGC 9.8 is ~$75-$100. There is only (1) Rai #0 CGC 10 correct? I would guess somewhere around $1000 maybe a little more. In my opinion (which doesn't mean much) the community is too small for it to warrant a higher price. If the pool of collectors with big pockets grows then I would think the price would be higher.
What does it matter though Greg isn't selling and I can't afford it.

I do believe with the announcement yesterday, and just a random sampling of comments on boards, that the readership will be growing considerably in the coming 12-18 months.FormerReader wrote:greg wrote:Someone other than me should try to guess the hypothetical eBay ending price. I would not disagree with that. Let's hope that turns out to be true and we can bump this thread at that point.Ramses818 wrote:I do believe with the announcement yesterday, and just a random sampling of comments on boards, that the readership will be growing considerably in the coming 12-18 months.FormerReader wrote:greg wrote:Someone other than me should try to guess the hypothetical eBay ending price. It would take more than $1,000 to take away my Shadowman 1 CGC 9.9. I got lucky and purchased it in 2013 (I think) from this forum for more than the selling price listed in 2008.
