Speculation Misses

Post by kjjohanson »

I figured I'd start a companion thread for the Hot/Hard to Find Modern Comics thread to discuss comics that people thought would eventually be key but never panned out. I don't mean the big obvious ones (Spider-man #1, X-Men #1, X-Force #1, Turok #1, etc.) that sold millions during the bubble, but issues that you thought were going to be highly sought-after (but weren't yet) that never panned out.

Rather than just list the issue, let's hear why you though it was going to be key, and whether you think it still has breakout potential.
A few of my picks:

Issue: Chromium Man #1, Triumphant Comics
Why? First Adam Pollina art; really loved his style and thought he would hit it big in comics
Still worth picking up? I still like the art, and remember the series as being good, but I don't see any long-term desirability
Image

Issue: Web of Spider-man #19
Why? First appearance of Solo (also the first appearance of Humbug and has Silvestri art, but those are secondary)
Still worth picking up? I always saw a lot of potential with Solo ("While I live, terror dies"), especially after 9/11 Marvel could have done something big with him. I still see that possibility, so yeah
Image

Issue: Cable #15
Why? First appearance of Marrow
Still worth picking up? It's been years since I followed the X-books, but it seems like Marrow didn't stick around long with the X-Men, so probably no
Image

More to come as I work through my collection…

Cool thread :thumb:
Got nothing to add, but watching and reading.
I wish their was a Spinal Tap comic, and I had a copy CGC graded at 11.

I read somewhere that Solo got HIV/AIDS.
Marrow might be still around. I think she got a new look.

After my first post I looked into Marrow and it seems she's going to be part of the new X-Force that's launching this month.

Darker Image #1 (had to get all the cards of course....who knows which one will be worth more)

Image #0 Coupon books

Multiple copies of X-O Manowar #0 and Turok #1

Various Toy Biz figures that Wizard arbitrarily decided were short packed and rare.

I could go on for some time....

Yeah, but those are all obvious, and were misses because there was so much speculation.

Not comics, but my only try at "investing" in sports cards, I went all in on Tim Couch rookie cards.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I haven't speculated in much (I usually wait until there's confirmed sales of a hot book and see if I can sell any), but I got a stack of those damn 52 books that I didn't unload quick enough. :P

I don't know why this didn't post to the thread the first time;now I need to re-type everything:

Issue: Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #5, Marvel Comics
Why? First Ultimate Nick Fury. I picked up a copy of this when it was announced that SLJ would be portraying Fury in the movies, and his likeness would be used in the comics (although visually that didn't happen until Ultimates #1)
Still worth picking up? I'm guessing no. Since Marvel has shoe-horned the SLJ version into the proper Marvel Universe, the first appearance there might have more long-term potential.

Some are still valuable. And I've sold everyone I had for at least over cover.
I actually think most of them will be $8-ish books, maybe $6-is.
Not great but over cover.
Harley Quinn 3-d and jokers daughter still have value.

In fact if anyone has either of those books, let's make a trade.
Heck id be interested in trading for just about any 3-d book if the trade
Is right.

I have some of the 3-D covers at BIN for $7 - that's cover price plus shipping. I've lowered prices on the "better" ones I have, still no bites. I tried auctions before switching to BIN as well.

No one wants my stuff on eBay. I have seen copies of the same thing I am offering sell for MORE than my opening price, and yet I re-list, and re-list, and re-list.

IDK what I have done to offend eBayers.

I've got a bunch of VH1 Harbinger 10s (first HARD Corps) and Shadowman 8s (first Darque). How come those aren't worth anything?

But I do remember my LCS guy telling me this death of Superman thing was going to be a big deal and I told him I would take 10 (for $20). When it came out he bought them from me for $20 each before they even touched my hands.

I bought a couple of Image books over the last couple of years when they first came out just to see if they would get hot. They didn't, but I only bought one copy so no biggie. Skullkickers and Bedlam. Oh, and that relaunch of Prophet. I actually liked that one but it just got too weird to follow.

That makes sense to me. I think the first appearance of Miles Morales (new Ultimate Spidey) is still really cheap, but I don't know what is going to happen to that character.

Image books are so hard to speculate on but The prophet #21 still can get some $$$.

When details were coming out during the making of Iron Man 3, I was keeping up on eBay auctions for Marvel Comics Presents #26 - the first appearance of Coldblood. It was announced that Eric Savin (Coldblood's alter ego) was going to be a villain in IM3 and I figured there could be a chance it would take off. I think it showed some increase in value for a time but I never pulled the trigger on buying any copies. There's currently a copy on eBay with a BIN of 99¢ so glad I didn't spend too much time speculating (or investing!) on this one. Guess I missed out on my own speculation as well.
Black Science. Lazarus. Birthright. Saga. Manifest Destiny. Deadly Class.

Ha ha. When it first came out, I picked up a few copies of that issue, mostly because it was a first appearance and vigilantes seemed to be selling well, so I expected there would be some demand for it later. Totally missed when it got hot recently though.

Sorting through some boxes recently, I discovered that I have like 7 or 8 copies of the Man of Steel 17 (first cameo of Doomsday). I'm getting a batch of books together for CGC and those are definitely going.

I bought a few Number Crunchers #1 one one outlier sale, haha. Lesson learned, don't speculate on mini series, and be wary of obscure publishers.
