Dunno. I paid $300 for it back in the early 90s. It's gotta be worth something, right?lorddunlow wrote:How much and what condition? PM me!Carson wrote:Need 129? I could dig mine outta storage (it's heated/cooled).
I'll dig it out of storage and PM you some scans ASAP.

Nice. Those books in the hundreds, particularly the early ones, are getting tougher to come by.

At NYCC, a dealer had a CGC 0.5 Amazing Fantasy 15 for sale for $3500. If it's guaranteed to be in the lowest possible condition, why not crack the case open in the chance that someone else might consider it to be in better condition?

Re: Amassing My Complete Amazing Spider-Man Run
So, I'll soon be updating the first post with a complete run down of the books I now have. I'll keep it updated and maybe add some pictures. I'd been contemplating this for a while and StarBrand nudged me over the fence.
A question for those that have done this before. How many boxes (short/long), how many Silver Age bags, modern, etc. should I need in total at the end of this? I'm trying to figure out where to store these and prepare and organizational scheme. Any general storage recommendations are appreciated.

Re: Amassing My Complete Amazing Spider-Man Run
I'm late to this party but I can tell you a little bit about how I went about collecting my full run of Avengers. When Valiant was winding down in the late 90s, I decided that I wanted to immerse myself in Marvel. So I chose the Avengers because it seemed like a good way to get a rotating cast of characters.lorddunlow wrote:A question for those that have done this before. Get the expensive books now, they're not going down in price anytime soon. I bought my Avengers #1 in 1998 for $285. I had it slabbed last year (which I kinda regret because like you, I want to read it) and received a 4.5. That book now sells for around $1800 (slabbed).
In 1998 $285 wasn't all that much money -- but I could never swing $1800 now. Comics outpace inflation I guess.
For buying, watch Craigslist every day. I picked up a nearly complete run of Iron Man for $125. It was insane, all that was missing was issues 2-17. You will eventually come across collectors who have decided to sell but dread having to auction and ship everything piecemeal on Ebay.
Also, imo Ebay can be very overpriced. I bought 2/3 of my Avengers run by spelunking through every LCS in the NY area. When you do it that way, you aren't competing against a zillion Ebay shoppers, you're competing against the very limited (1,000?) regulars who happen to visit that shop.
As for storage, figure you'll eventually have 4 long boxes. Use the Gerber Mylites2 and full- backs for the first 300 issues. Mylars are beautiful -- I should have my head examined for ever using poly bags.
I use the Gerber Silver/Gold bags. Be advised that they do not fit in regular boxes. You will have to spring for the expensive Gerber acid free boxes (which I have not done) or settle for oversized magazine boxes.

Re: Amassing My Complete Amazing Spider-Man Run
So spine rolls and miswraps are driving me insane. I just hate the way they look. I can't stand when a book is in good shape but part of the cover is on the back of the book. I've passed on a couple of good deals due to horrible spine rolls or miswraps. Also, what's the deal with the weird staple placement on a large proportion of the Silver Age books? Nobody even comments on it when I see it.
EBay is still driving me crazy - it's like everyone pays the same price no matter the grade. Idiots.

Same here. I've been buying a lot of Silver and Bronze Marvel on Ebay for the last year but I always pass over a cover with 25% of the cover price wrapped around to the back.lorddunlow wrote:So spine rolls and miswraps are driving me insane. Nearly everything I buy is VF or better... but I really need to climb down to F books. I could purchase twice as much, easily. But I just get sucked into the "Well, if you're gonna bother getting it, you may as well spring for that nearly perfect copy..."

I'm actually okay with VG copies if they didn't go for almost as much VF/NM copies on Ebay.jmatt wrote:Same here. Re: Amassing My Complete Amazing Spider-Man Run
So, I bought these last 2 from the same guy as the huge lot above. I was asking why he was selling so many and he informed me the Copper and Bronze age were from his own personal childhood/teenage collection. He was selling them off to complete and upgrade his Silver Age ASM collection in addition to some other Silver Age stuff.
The 31 and 50 were also from his collection but purchased secondhand. (He bought most of the Copper and Bronze off the shelves himself) he's upgrading his Silver Age and he sold me his lower grade copies.

Re: Amassing My Complete Amazing Spider-Man Run
I just received the books today! They are in even better shape than the scans represented. I am a very happy camper. I'm tapped out for the time being, but hopefully I'll be able to purchase some more after the holidays. This is so much fun.
Both books are extremely glossy and have very little signs of wear. They have definitely been read a bunch, but I don't want pristine copies as I want them to have a history.

I love the CGC forums. The dude shipped these 2 issues in a Priority Mail bag with a piece of masonite board in it! Good luck with folding that up and shoving it in the box, postal carrier!
I definitely have caught the bug, though. I just like perusing the sale threads over there. Some people have some serious cash tied up in comics.

I just spotted an ASM 50 at my LCS today... It looked to be in good shape except it was missing small pieces from the cover, and it was priced at $250 even still!

Re: Amassing My Complete Amazing Spider-Man Run
They are generally quite fair with their pricing/grading - I've been very happy with the price I've paid for some solid Uncanny X-Men issues I bought there. So I would trust that the book was in sharp shape despite the small pieces missing off the cover (we're talking a 1/4"-1/2" or less square bit missing from the upper right & lower left corner areas) at that price. I didn't go home & look up the value of the issue though, is that actually kinda high?lorddunlow wrote:grendeljd wrote:I just spotted an ASM 50 at my LCS today... Re: Amassing My Complete Amazing Spider-Man Run
I still don't have a good feel on prices yet. I search eBay a lot and base my idea of value on the general prices there. However, ASM 50 is all over the place. I've seen some go over $200 and some closer to $100 depending on grade. Slabbed copies of it have all been well over $200 - even the lower grades.grendeljd wrote:They are generally quite fair with their pricing/grading - I've been very happy with the price I've paid for some solid Uncanny X-Men issues I bought there. It looked to be in good shape except it was missing small pieces from the cover, and it was priced at $250 even still!
I paid $125 for mine and it is a mighty nice copy. The 31 only set me back $60. I cannot believe the deal I was given.
*SQUEE* your science, I have a machine gun.
