Dead?

Comic universes no longer active, Bravura, Continuity, CrossGen, Future, Malibu, Ultraverse... and others that are 'no longer with us' today (or only recently brought back).

Dead?

Post by kevinbastos »

So, I boarded up my New Universe collection today. Needing 4-6 comics to be finished. It unfortunately will not fit in a short box - so it'll probably be split into two , bulked up by Dark Key, Defiant, Broadway.

Anyhoo - with Valiant back from the dead - got me to wondering.

First - has anyone read the New Universe new stories? Spider-Man 2099, Quasar, Newuniversal, Starblast, etc?

Anyhoo - I'm sure this discussion exists somewhere. Would the New Universe still be dead? And how can a Universe come back?

Was Valiant still alive during Acclaim publication?

Is the old Valiant a dead Valiant?

Etc.

The New Universe revival is officially called New Universal and it is sort of like an ultimate New Universe. It is a reboot, not a continuation.

I would not consider New Universe to be revived unless it was a continuation. Further - I think New Universal is probably a dead universe; certainly it is one neglected by its publisher.

Chiclo - have you read any of the untold tales of the new universe?

Are they worthwhile?

Even if neglected, wouldn't/couldn't they be an argument that it's still some kind of life left?

Untold Tales - Quasar - Starblast take place or tie-in to original New Universe continuity.

Untold Tales - they are decent though the Spitfire story seems to take WAY out place. It takes place before the White Event - yet there is a paranormal at the Chernobyl Plant meltdown. :?

Quasar is pretty essential and pretty cool as well. Issues afterwards contains elements such as the Star Brand and an antibody that hitches a ride that lead into the Starblast cross-over.

Starblast is the last of official continuity of the original New Universe.

New Universal - New Continuity Altogether.

Spider-Man 2099 could be associated with the New Universe with the Net Prophet but really that is a story never finished. Spider-Man 2099 44 he remembers his last name as Tensen, but he has none of the same powers, never verified as Justice of the New Universe except by Peter David after the series was canceled, and is so sporadic in the series (Spider-Man 2099 14-44 - 7 issues + 1/2 = all total appearances) - is it worth it?

New Universe also appears in Exiles (2001) 72-74 which does have an interesting twist at the end which would have one to believe that the Tensen of this continuity is the one that ends up in the world of 2099.

Peter David did indeed finish up the Net Prophet mystery from Spider-Man 2099 - it was in his Captain Marvel series. The storyline was called "Time Flies Saga" (#27-30).

It also reveals who Thanatos is.

Ok - never knew that - Thanks for the info - but which Tensen is it? Original New Universe or Exiles New Universe or really does it matter?

I am not sure, but I think the Newuniversal discontinuation was more to do with Warren Ellis losing a lot of material, including Newuniversal, on a terminally crashed computer.

I've read all the Untold Tales Of The New Universe. I loved them all. They had very much the feel of the original New Universe stuff. The Nightmask Untold Tales issue wraps up a story that was originally started in Nightmask 4... or a nearby issue. I've always wondered since reading that new Nightmask Untold Tales story if that's the longest (in terms of actual time, it was about twenty years) a comic book story ever took to wrap up.

Deathwatch 2000 - still unfinished as to date even though it had a new story-arc "Rise of Magic" begin afterwards which is also unfinished

The Nightmask story may have had the longest period of time of any story that is actually finished. Unfinished stories... there are plenty of them that go back to the Golden Age.

I always knew these were madness when i found the first few unreadable, but always loved the crazy style and packed they were. I was not surprised these never had an ending, pretty sure they were winging it for the most part.

Ok - never knew that - Thanks for the info - but which Tensen is it? Original New Universe or Exiles New Universe or really does it matter?

I'm pretty sure it's ONU since the Captain Marvel issues were from early 2002. The Exiles World Tour - New Universe started in 2006.
