My big comic purchase this week...

Post by Jersen »

So a guy at work who was a trainee of mine came to me a little while back and said he had some comic books that his wife was making him get rid of for storage space or something. He asked me if I was interested, and of course I said I was. He finally brings them to work with him this week and it's 4 boxes filled to the brim. 2 boxes are about 2/3 the size of a longbox, one filled with Spider-Man and related books from the late '80s-early '90s and the other with nearly the entire 80 issue set of Transformers that ran from the mid-'80s to early-'90s along with some Transformers miniseries. The other 2 boxes are Staples copy paper boxes (you know, those big cardboard boxes that hold lots of 500-sheet sets of copy paper), both of which are filled to the brim with Avengers and related books and X-Men and related books.

I haven't had a chance to sort through them all yet. I'm basically waiting to get ahold of more longboxes and bags/boards to sort them with before I really get started on that big job. I haven't actually counted them all, but I've done some estimating based on some of the stacks and I'm going to say it's probably close to 1000 issues that I paid $150 for. I was a little regretful immediately after I wrote this dude the check, but to get that many issues I'm pretty happy. Hell, if nothing else I can fill in the few gaps here and there in the runs included and maybe start selling them off. At any rate, this is the biggest comics purchase I've ever made, it's gonna take me a good little bit to sort through all this. Maybe when I get some gumption in the morning I'll post some pics.

Congrats! Sounds like you got a good deal and enough reading material to last at least 6 months. Depending on grade, you might also have a few gems in there! :thumb:

The orginal Marvel The Transformers is good around #1-25, #38-50, and #60-80 are all pretty solid and pretty good for the most part. Both Transformers: The Headmasters and The Transformers Universe (which is a characters profiles) mini-series are good.

The Transformers #26-#37, G.I. Joe Meets The Transformers and Marvel's The Transformers: The Movie mini-series adaption all suck.

The Transformers#51-59 are OK but the changing of writers from Bob Budiansky to Simon Furman is not great especially since Furman had to finish Budiansky's final arc and then change or retcon the ending later on in the series.

The Transformers: Generation 2 #1-12 is IMHO the best of Marvel US' Transformers comics.

So I've done some initial sorting and taking a rough inventory, and here are the main components of what I purchased:

Avengers: 243, 245, 249, 298, 300, 301, 303-304, 306-330, 333, 342-349
West Coast Avengers: 2, 28-29, 42-66, 72-76, 79, 81, 83
Captain America: 262, 350-351, 364-385, 387-394, 396-403
Iron Man: 186, 227, 230-233, 236-252, 254, 258-274, 278, 280, 290
Fantastic Four: 319, 322-324, 334-341, 358, 364
Amazing Spider-Man: 313-314, 317-328, 334-345, 347-354, 357-365
Spectacular Spider-Man: 84, 144-181, 184, 186, 188, 190
Web of Spider-Man: 34-35, 37, 41-43, 45-47, 50, 52-55, 57-63, 67-68, 70-74, 76-77, 80, 85-86, 88-90
Quasar (1989): 1-3
Quasar (1992): 1-28, 31, 35
Darkhawk: 2-17
New Warriors: 1-19, 21, 23
Guardians of the Galaxy (1990): 1-10, 13-24, 26

These titles also have all associated annuals published from 1988-1992 as well as associated crossover issues from what I've seen. There are also a few other assorted issues for titles like Daredevil, Incredible Hulk, Silver Surfer, X-Factor, X-Force, Power Pack, and others. There were also most or all issues of various limited series such as Saga of the Original Human Torch, Infinity Gauntlet, and Squadron Supreme. And, of course, there is also the aforementioned nearly-complete set of Transformers and associated miniseries.

I'm having trouble getting pics posted, but I did take some and I'll get them up as soon as I can. Overall I'm very pleased and the books look mostly to be in F-VF condition with some NM. The biggest thing I've got to do now is make sure I grab bags and boards because while almost all of them are bagged, some of them have proper boards and some of them are boarded with pieces of regular cardboard cut from boxes. I don't know what he was thinking when he did that, but he obviously didn't know that's not good.

I've already come across some nice surprises going through this initial sorting phase because I've learned that I got nice chunks of McFarlane and Larsen issues of ASM and a nice chunk of Byrne's Avengers West Coast run. I'm also really excited about the Captain America and Iron Man issues and I can't wait to reread the old Guardians of the Galaxy issues!

"Quasar (1989): 1-3
Quasar (1992): 1-28, 31, 35 "

...um, Quasar, as far as I know, only had the one series? :o

What's this 1-3 series? I ask because I collected the series when it was new.

I'm thinking it might be the newsstand versions of #32-34, which were numbered #1-3. However, I don't think they came out in 1989. :?
