Introductions. And my Valiant History
Valiant Ones,
In the early 90s, I was just a young man trying to make his way in the world. For the most part, I had boxed up my childhood comics & toys and set them aside, so I could get about the business of being a "man". Whatever that meant to the older generation at the time.
Driving a truck 6 days a week allowed me ample time to chat with the boys in the warehouse while we loaded the trucks in the AM and unloaded them at night. Many's the night we joked and worked!
Scott, one of the guys, and I were friendly because we both dug horror films (the Evil Dead Trilogy & Phantasm 1-4) and played musical instruments, he played the guitar and I tickle the ivories. He was friends with this other guy, Walter, who worked in another location of our business. He told me the guy was a huge comicbook fan. Well, the 1992 Chiller Theater Convention (THE best horror/sci fi convention in the NY/NJ area) was due in a few weeks and we all were gonna get together and hit the con as a group.
The convention was a blast! I purchased a screen used prop, a stunt copy Necronomicon from Evil Dead II signed by Bruce Campbell. But that paled in comparison to what I got that day.
See, Walter, God rest his soul, was a Valiant fan from the beginning. He had it all! Or at least every hero book that had been published prior to October of 1992. He started talking about Valiant and Magnus, Solar and the Harby gang. He was real passionate about it and was explaining to me the basic plot of Solar & Erica Pierce, and it all seemed so very deep and well thought out, so I was hooked!
So, in the next few weeks, I went back to Comic Explosion as I had throughout high school and the dealer, Dambrodt, was overwhelmed to see me! I told him I wanted him to hold a few titles for me. There was a minimum of four titles in order to save books, so I asked him to hold, Magnus, Solar, Eternal Warrior and Harbinger.
By the time New Year 1993 arrived, I was a Valiant completist!! I was collecting every title and reading them immediately. I had purchased every back issue and would rant and rave with Dambrodt every week over the latest issues. He knew I was nuts about these very special characters and would save me a bunch of their promo items and posters. I stayed with it until the end... and even started reading the Acclaim stuff... but the life had left the company.
I eventually sell off the majority of my collection as the years go buy.
Now, almost 20 years later, I find this site and here I am scouring eBay for back issues of my favorite comics characters ever, just so I can have them professionally bound! My main project is a chronological binding of the future Valiant titles, but I am sure I will be getting into more and more things as I begin to obsess once again!
Over the coming months, I will become involved in the community as I find my place amongst our shared Valiant Universe!
thanks,
Dino AKA Malev Emporer
