FCBD Preview Pages in color with Magnus!
"The dawn of a new age of superhero excitement begins on Free Comic Book Day 2010, as Dark Horse Comics proudly presents the return of two of the most legendary characters in the annals of comics—Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom and Magnus, Robot Fighter—reimagined for the twenty-first century by another comics legend, writer Jim Shooter! This FCBD extravaganza features all-new Solar and Magnus stories, with art by fan favorites Dennis Calero (X-Men Noir, X-Factor) and Bill Reinhold (The Punisher, Wolverine: Origins), leading up to two new series launching this summer."

Good catch. Torn myself. It's a return to Manning's original intent, but the white ones sure are well established. The date bugs me more. It's before the first Manning story takes place.Daniel Jackson wrote:Very nice, looking better with every preview.
One thing though, Magnus needs his white boots back. Not a fan of the grey color.

I agree. We need the white boots! Petition? At least the rest of his costume is the same, none of that battle armor or pantsDaniel Jackson wrote: One thing though, Magnus needs his white boots back. Not a fan of the grey color.
I had a feeling this would be a reboot of the Manning stuff. I kind of wish it was 4002 thus keeping Shooter's Valiant run(0-20) and Manning's run in continuity. But that may have been tricky. And if it was 4001 it would be hard not to make it a re-tread of the Valiant stories .magnusr wrote:The date bugs me more. It's before the first Manning story takes place.
It's a tough one, but I'm glad they didn't put it in a more realistic date like 2556 or something, 4000 is classic If anybody was going to reboot Manning, I'm glad it's Shooter

Yeah it clearly looks like a reboot on Magnus. You can even look at the robs and notice they're differently designed (they have elbow and knee joints, and their labeling is done differently).
Not sure what choice there was. There's been at least three "pick up where Manning left off" attempts (all of which ignored each other) and Shooter already did one (Valiant Magnus, which was the most successful). I seriously doubt he's going to want to compete with his own past work like that.
And I'm not sure if you could pick up from Shooter's Valiant Magnus. Best case scenario you get a very complicated story to explain to readers (Syncron, Magnus as a Goph, etc) and you couldn't use half the supporting cast cause they were created by Shooter and company at Valiant (and would be owned by VEI now, I assume). Worst case scenario VEI may own the Valiant Magnus stories, thus preventing their use by anyone else (I have no idea if this is the case, but I know it's curious Dark Horse never reprinted them)
