my story (maybe it's too long)
I've been collecting comics on and off probably since the mid 1980's. I remember meeting a comic book collector in the bottom floor of a Woolworths? This guy had a tiny section in the store and he sold comic books. Really cool guy and even showed me a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book. I think it was black and white, kinda looked like a giant comic book.
My dad didn't think spending $100 for that comic was a good idea so he recommended I start out with classics like spiderman, x-men, and silver surfer. The comic book guy got me titles like Elfquest and Longshot. I would read these comics multiple times and probably bugged the hell out of my dad about getting more comics…I was hooked.
I was able to visit Woolworths every time I visited my relatives in LA and we'd stop for a visit to pick up comics. On one of my visits, the comic book guy was no longer there, super bummed. I don't know what happened to guy but we eventually found a comic book store (Legacy Comics in Glendale) down the street and I saw copies of Fantastic Four #1 and Silver Surfer #1. I spent the next 1-2 years collecting comics and stopped for about 5 years.
It wasn't until I was visiting my cousin in LA when he asked if I collected comics. I said I used to years ago and he told me about these comics called Valiant. He said they weren't anything like the ones I used to read, and we headed to comic book store the same day. I believe I picked up Shadowman 1, Archer and Armstrong 1, and free copy of Unity. I found the stories much different than the Marvel/DC universe and even the art was different. I was fascinated with story lines and addicted to Unity crossover. I started to collect all the titles. Harbinger, Shadowman, Solar, and X-O Manowar were my favorites. I swear the cover art blew anything out of the water.
It was a great time to be collecting comics. Funny thing was Shadowman even prompted a cross country trip to New Orleans. My friend was also into Shadowman and were stoked to see Bourbon street, the whole jazz scene, and the french quarter.
By the time I went away to college, I had about 1 1/2 years of each Valiant title. Unfortunately, I had to stop collecting since I was a broke college student. Over the years I would break out with the comics and give them a read bringing me fond memories of the stories/artwork and the collecting trips to various comic book shows.
All my Valiants were bagged, boarded, and stored away in long white boxes. I figured 10 years later, I have a good job, I might as well complete the Valiant Universe. It's been fun going back to comic book stores and checking out the reject section for Valiants, overpriced ebay auctions, and random thrift stores. I finally completed the Valiant Universe and working on VVSS/Gold stuff. I haven't read all the comics yet and looking forward to sitting down and reading each title in their entirety.
Been lurking for years, thought I share my story.

solar 10
I was at a computer show in the mid 90s during the height of Valiant. The comic was double bagged and the dealer assured me it was in mint condition. He said it was too delicate to remove from bag since the cover was easy to scratch. When I got home, I noticed the big crease on the back and the comic book show was an hour away.Draco wrote:Wicked post dude, glad you decided to stop lurking and start posting.
Shame about the Solar # 10 for $60, did you ever get to complain?
Anyway welcome to the board.
It was the most expensive single comic book I've ever bought to this day.

"Don't take the book out of the bag", that's the first warning sign right there. I don't know how people sleep at night after ripping someone off like that. Unfortunately, rip off artists are everywhere.booted wrote:I was at a computer show in the mid 90s during the height of Valiant. There was a story on our local news a couple of nights ago where the "cash for gold" people are in town and set up at one of the local hotels. The news sent a person with some gold jewelry to a reputable gold dealer in town who valued the piece at 120 bucks. When they went to the "cash for gold" folks they offered the person 14 dollars. As the person walked toward the door they offered 60 bucks. What a scam.

I used to trade bootlegs heavily. I'm not into much music at the moment (burn-out from years of playing, listening to, and thinking about music took its toll) but I remember fondly the good old days of padded envelopes, Maxell XLIIs, and some great tunes.booted wrote:booted - is short for bootlegging. I used to bootleg concerts and trade them to music fans around the world. I haven't bootlegged in years but it was fun while I did it.dave wrote:cool story. What does your name mean?

The memories of padded orange envelopes, trading compilation discs, etc. I couldn't believe how many people out there was into this trading bootleg game. The funniest part was when I would run into fellow bootleggers at concerts trying to get an audio sweetspot on the floor. My MD recorder eventually broke after recording about 70 shows or so. I'll replace it one of these days, I'm not too hot on the current music scene though.Tim wrote:I used to trade bootlegs heavily.
