DD #115 *SPOILERS*

Post by Lightning Strike »

I really enjoyed this storyarc. Brubaker has done an outstanding job of incorporating a new cast of supporting characters into the book like Iron Fist, Master Izo, Tarantula and the White Tiger.

Izo especially is going to be great in this book. It looks like he's going to take Matt under his wing as his apprentice. And according to Danny, Izo is quite remarkable and his exploits and skill are well known in the book of the Iron Fist.

If Matt's status as one of the finest martial artists in the MU wasn't already high, his tutelage under Izo will elevate it even higher.

At the end of the issue it was revealed that Izo had a spy in the Hand organization. I'm betting it's Tarantula. When him and the White Tiger knocked Danny out, she was set to kill him, but Tarantula said not to. Plus, he's deeply embedded in the Hand's org. now, so he would be able to tell Izo all of their plans and schemes.

I have a love hate relationship with Brubaker's run on DD, on the one hand he always does great, noirish superhero stories and Lark's art is superb.

On the other hand, he hit the reset button pretty quickly and undid a lot of Bendis' run (the first run since Miller that changed the character in a positive way) and he's retreading a lot of old ground (and needlessly killing, Vanessa, the Kingpin's wife and the White Tiger while doing so)...

But, saying that; this is still some great, traditional Daredevil, it's good to see Danny Rand getting some play, the Black Tarantula is a lot of fun and Lady Bullseye is a good villain.

it looks like Kingpin turns up next month too, which I guess sums up my problem with the book. on the one hand, I love a good DD/Kingpin story, on the other, I've already read a hundred of them.

I really need to put together the last ten issues as i havent read all of them.
This is title i follwed after Kevin Smith.
To me his arc was over rated in terms of overall quality although having such a massive name like his attatched at the time did wonders so no real complaints there.

The Bendis run was outstanding and equal to any DD stuff done before i.e Miller.
Bendis run though was way to lengthy in the end with so little happening for a six month arc.

I was happy to see Brubaker and Lark take over and loved their previous book Gotham Central.

So far so good for me here, but once i get up to scratch well know for sure.

Good issue and an ending that I didn't expect. I'm thinking that Matt will probably accept the offer eventually.
Jay Tomio wrote:I think just about everything from Daredevil from Kevin Smith on has been excellent - but damn it, for some reason I'm getting tired of it. It's being played rather brilliantly, but for me it's the same note.
Are you saying that after a while of listening to Beethoven, you want to check out some Britney Spears?

I do agree that it has been kind of the same for a while, but I can't really think of what they can do to shake things up. I like the dark and tortured DD. I can always read another title if I'm in a lighter mood.

The Smith run upset a lot of longer term DD fans, myself included, for killing off Karen Page and Mysterio (really) for zero narrative gain in a particularly pointless plot.

If I could remove one arc from any continuity, I'd pick Smith's Guardian Devil story.

David Mack, after Smith, was so so, but he did at least invent Echo who has found a solid place in the 616, but that run ran into Bendis's extended period on the book which had a lot of fun with the idea of 'outing' a superhero's secret identity (a trick that D.G Chichester pulled in his DD run, years before) and has been the most significant DD run since Frank Miller in the 80's.

The problem with so many DD writers is that they keep going back to the Miller template without really advancing anything, and when they do (A 'la Bendis) it gets reset extremely quickly.

Accept Lady Bullseye offer? Matt would NEVER do that

And he won't, because things don't change that much.

Thus why you know they will do it again. Nothing new under the sun in today's comics.
