Collecting the Valiant universe—any suggestions?

Post by sanman »

Having lost 95% of my post-Unity Valiants to Katrina I am slowly moving forward in recollecting my runs. A part of me wants to take maybe two titles at a time but another thinks that building toward company bench marks (ie. serial number books, era II card books, Birth Quake..etc.) is a better way to go.

Also, my LCS has near complete runs of the middle VH-1 era books from 50 cents to ½ cover price available in VF-NM condition. I’ve been buying maybe $20 or so at a time but with so many titles it’s been slow going.

Any suggestions?

QFT.

Obv. the pre-unis and the end runs books will be the hardest to get.

.50 for any Val is a good deal. You can find them cheaper, but when you need about all of them..... drop the .50 and get the books.

But you will want them all at some point. The same for VH2 and VH3.

50 cents is not too bad for commons. Given the recent price spikes in some of the books you may want to step up your efforts and focus on the key books first, if you can get them for a decent price.

Aside from the incentive books and those ending run issues are there any real post-Unity key books? I started collecting Valiant when X-O #3 was first published and do not recall any post-Unity books causing a stir in the market. :hm:

Your suggestions would be appreciated though.

The post Unity "keys" are gonna be Rai 0, Eternal Warrior 3-7, and the later issues of X-O, Bloodshot, Solar, and Magnus. The last issue of each series is pretty key, as in, worth money.

imo 50 cents for books between Unity and Choas effect is a good price for single issues, but not a good price for buying in bulk.

Maybe this has changed recently.

I'm new to the board but a fan of Valiant comics since right before Unity, so Harbinger 1-9 we're tough finds for me, just recently purchased the pre unity Harbinger stuff, anyway what is the deal with the recent price hikes? I know Valiant is relaunching (so I hear) and ofcourse the possible Harbinger movie, so is this the reason for resurgence (spelling)?

Yes on both counts.

The closer we get to seeing new monthly books I believe we will see the prices continue to go up as well.

I just saw prices go up at a place I go to.

I know a guy that had books for .25, now they are all in $1 bins. :|

All of the end of the run books are pricy. But end of XO, Solar, mag, are even more... and the end of Turok and Bloodshot..... :screwy:

The bloodshot books can be vey hard to find, and nice copies, even harder.

I actually think that the end of the run books might surpass some pre-unity in collecta-a-bility. (meaning, Price and hard to find-ness)

The end of the run books are going to be very hard for the "new" / old collectors trying to get back into it, to find.

I have seen many more pre-unity books compared to Bloodshot #51, Last Stand, Turok #47.

Well the print runs of the end of series books are even half (or less) of the pre-unity runs...they are miniscule compared to the commons...so that makes sense that they are difficult to find and pricey :thumb:

Any major angles or character introductions in the later books of any of the Valiant comics?

Example: Are we going to all hate the fact that we didn't order extra copies of X-O man owar # I don't know some random issue.

I know I sound like a dum azz but I feel as if time is not on my side lol :o

Alot of people feel like that.

I think that the "keys" are already established. I think alot of "us" are trying to get as many as we can right now. (ebay is showing that)

Unless Dino has like 200 Solar #30 & #31s so he decides to make Ravenus a major villian in the new books.

I would advise going after the books that were the "hot picks" back in the day, especially the first appearances of major characters. For instance Solar #14 first appearance of Fred Bender, Shadowman #16 first appearance of Dr. Mirage, Shadowman #8 first appearance of Master Darque etc...

Most of these books can be still be picked up for around a buck, so you don't have much to lose.

I would agree with this advice! When I was re-building a lot of my Valiant collection after selling chunks of my entire collection off, I went for the books that were previously hard to come by, but I could find now for cheap. The commons between Unity and Chaos Effect will always be cheap and common, IMHO.

Lots of great advice. I'm definitely going to have to start focusing on the end run issues.

To my surprise I don't see much discussion about the Gold Key books. Though pricey, I'm more inclined to pursue these as opposed to the VH-2 or VH-3 books. Gold Key Solar #1 or Shadowman Vol 3 # 2 VARIANT? To me there's no choice.
