Valiant Newsstand Edition Question

Post by Escaflown4 »

I'm sure we all know or heard of the few newsstand editions that are listed on this site like Visitor vs Valiant Universe #1 & #2 and Destroyer #0. We also know that there are some later Valiants that also have newstand editions as well, but looks exactly the same as the direct edition. So what sets them apart to the point where only the Visitor vs Valiant Universe and Destroyer #0 gets included in the list to get books for 100% completion? Is it because of the price change on the cover? If so, how come this didn't get included? I came across this lately and it got me wondering.

Image

Notice the price is $2.50 while the direct edition is $2.25.

Image

I'm a bit curious as to what everyone thinks.

Master list of confirmed new price variants.

Bloodshot #30, 31, 32
X-O Manowar #43

Did someone mention Valiant Newsstand editions? :D

That's cool! I never noticed that the price was different on the BS31, and I have two of the newsstand version for that issue.

I've been hunting these things down for a couple years now... :thumb:

I dont see why any of them are included. Its the same book. Sounds like more of a completeist item to me. Just about every company has newsstand and direct. So if you collect a Marvel title that has 100 issues, does that mean you dont have the whole run unless you have 200 books? 100 of them being doubles because it says newsstand?

If the prices were different then I would say yes. If nothing was different except the UPC code then no. Look at the price variants of such books such as Iron Fist 14 , this book fetches a ton more money. just because of the price difference. There are some people who collect based on the adds included in the book and don't feel that the set is complete until all of the add variants have been included. Another key book that should be mentioned is Star Wars #1. the original book you can buy all day for cheap but the .35 variants fetches multiples of guide.

So to answer your question , I would yes. if there are printing differences in the book then theey should be included. I am not asying it is required though. Most collectors only want a complete RUN of books that is not missing any particular number. that is what most collecttors consider complete but in actuality ( I am a completist though) I would say that ALL variants (printed , not signed) should be included if at all possible. Though it may be damn near impossible to do in some cases.

Wasn't Iron Fist 14 also the first appearance of Sabretooth?

Wouldn't that also drive the price up?

Well if a newsstand is just being noticed on a book that was printed over 10 years ago, and there already books that have been discovered from the same era with newsstand and direct versions...Every Valiant title that has a barcode probly has the 2 "variants".

That's wrong. You need to read the other newsstand thread. I'll find the link for you.

There are newsstands only for

Bloodshot
Magnus
Ninjak
Solar (Destroyer one shot)
Turok
Visitor (Vis v. Val U 1-2)
X-O Manowar

The other titles have UPC's which say direct sales but have no newsstand counterparts.

The thing to remember about the Marvel price variants is that they were TEST prices, printed in very small quantities, and released only in certain markets.

The Valiant newsstand price variants were nothing special, not meant to be tests in any way, and were mass distributed along with every other newsstand book at the time.

So, there shouldn't be the incredibly price differences that you see with the 30s, the 35s, or the Amethysts.

Here is a list of other books which I surmise have price variant newsstands:

Bloodshot 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31
Magnus 46, 47 and 48
Solar 43, 44 and 45
X-O Manowar 41, 42 and 43.

My supposition is based on the fact that the direct versions of these books have cover prices of $2.25 and that their newsstand versions will be priced at $2.50.

I only have the BS 31 and XO 43 from this list; anyone else want to check their newsstand versions from this list?

It seems like the newsstand versions are the more difficult to find of these books?

To be sure; you cannot generally find them in comic shops.
