Harby Pink or Unity Red

Post by soundoftheuniverse »

With the prices on 9.8's being so close to one another I'm curious which book you guy's would rather own if given a choice between the two.

EDIT:

Quote by Greg on pg 4,

"Assume that you can only have one sent to you...
Vote for whichever one you want first."

I know we all want a CEAR so take a deep breath...

Unity Red gets the first vote!

That's a hard one I love both books but for me the Unity Red edges out the Harbinger Pink(by a tiny margin). I think only because I got all my Harbinger Pinks pretty cheap and fairly easy. The Unity Red was more of challenge to get at a decent price.

I was the total opposite actually. I got all four of my Unity Reds for 10 cents apiece, and had to pay real money for my one and only Harbinger Pink, but I still love Unity Red the best.

Harbinger Pink.

To me, Unity Red is a variant. It's cool, but it's a special edition. Harbinger Pink is a 1st edition low print run comic. As a collector, I value regular issues over variants.

2 cents from a newcomer,

Unity Reds have historically been a lot harder to find, and have always sold for a premium. In fact, when Joe Petrilak sold me the 'complete Valiant set', he made a point of NOT including Unity Red because it was so hard to find. Sure wish he'd shipped the golds and premiums. Sigh.

Anyways....Unity Reds were kept by folks at Valiant, and shops did NOT get more than one or two each.

Harb #0, on the other hand, went out to fans and sepculators, many of whom sold them right away, ensuring a consistent supply over the years.

They probably were printed within a few hundred copies of each other.

As it is, you can still find Harb #0's cheap if you know where to look, but you're not likely to find Unity Reds. Where Red-Rum got four of them for 10 cents each, I have no idea, but he got INCREDIBLY lucky.

Unity red everyday of the week. Harby pink is much easier to find and easier to get a good price (though its heating up now). I remeber a post about why unity red was better than the other unity premiums and greg pointed out that it was the only valiant book that had all the features that make a great book.

Having neither it would be a hard choice but i'd have to go with the Harbinger Pink because it would finish off my set.

We've been hearing about these missing books for over a year now and I'm beginning to think we'll continue to be haunted by Petrilak forever if something isn't done.

Where is this Petrilak guy anyway?!?

harb pink...unity red is what, the third or fourth variant of the unity book...harb pink (yeah, I know, blue came with the tpb, that's a second print, not a variant) is the only one...

Maybe it's because I have a bunch of Harby pinks (not quite as many as dino though) I would go for the Unity Red. I have never seen one not on ebay even in the Valiant heyday of 93/94. I don't have one and I want one, just can't come to grips with the cost of it.

Part of my reason for preferring Unity Red is nostalgic--Unity 0 was my first Valiant book & I prefer Unity to Harbinger.

As a collectible, Unity Red still gets my vote since I think it is harder to find (it came first, was released before Valiant was super-hot, seems to show up less often). And, as stated before, Harbinger 0 was released so late that it was a valuable collectible on its first day, thus they were kept in Mylars from the beginning.

I've found each for $3.00, but I've currently got just 2 Reds to 3 Harbingers (And for those who may be jealous, keep in mind I paid $8.00 for my first copy of the regular Unity 1).

I voted for the Harbinger Pink, I prefer that comic. BUT if we are talking on the aspect of rarity or hard to come by, by far is my choice between the 2 is Unity Red. I got a pretty cool deal on the last one I picked up for 55 bucks and it came with 7 other valiant comics (including a 9.8-9.9 solar #10 first print)

I voted for Pink, because it was original content when it came out, and fanboys had as much of a shot at getting one as dealers.

Unity Red is pretty rare, but it's just a glorified gold book and there was plenty of that around at the time. There's nothing new to them, just a different ink on part of the cover.

Well...according to Greg, he got rid of everything and got out of comics altogether.

There's a method to my madness....maybe, someone who knows him will say 'hey...there's this guy that keeps mentioning those books you owe him'....and maybe he'll either (A) come up with the books, or (B) come up with the dough.

That's my hope anyways.

The merits of both these issues can be debated at lenght. Both stories can be found in cheaper versions, so it's not a story factor, like the underated Harbinger #7. From my experience, it has been much harder to find Unity #0 Red, but I wouldn't turn down extra copies of either!:)---Steve G

Your dogs <i>are</i> cute, but I changed my avatar when Brother J posted his Pet thread last week. That & the fact that everyone wanted to pick a fight with me when I used the X-O statue as my avatar! Knightt can back me up on the psychology aspect of this.:)

The 'new' avatar pic is of my 6-yr old dog, Brisco. My wife & I are Bruce Campbell fans, & were fans of his "Brisco County Jr." series.---Steve G

I call it a tie with these two books. I mean I was thrilled when I finally snagged a Harby pink, but I was also thrilled to finally land a Unity red, equally so.

I have to go with Unity Red. In terms of being able to find one off eBay, I've never found a Unity Red, but I've come across lots of Harbinger Pinks. I've never had more than three Unity Reds at a time, but I've had at least 20 different Harbinger Pinks in my possession at one time or another.

Haven't seen <i>Bubba</i>. It didn't make it to the theaters here in Richmond. Actually, I'm surprised that Fahrenheit 911 did! Anyway, is it out on DVD yet?

To get back on-topic, I gave $50 for my first copy of Unity Red, back in 1993. I got another copy when I bought my friend's Valiant collection recently (Steven Huber from Galaxycomics.com). I traded my extra to Dino (along with a Harby Pink), when we made a trade for a beautiful copy of X-O #1/2 Gold. <i>THAT DAMNED X-O #1/2 GOLD!!</i>
I'm glad to finally have one, but I miss my extra Unity Red....If I hadn't sold any of my collection, I would have had two near complete sets of VVSS's (3-5 copies on some), three Diamond Unity sets, 2 CEAR's, & 30+ Valiant Voice #19's.:)

I have actually only seen a Unity Red once and that belonged to the LCS in my area that lost or had damaged all his stock in a fire 7/8 years ago and went out of business. As far as I know I was his only customer who had the Harby pinks in the early 90's because he only ordered 10-15 of the pre-unity harbingers and I was buying 5 each, accept for #4, must have had a car payment or something due that week and I only bought 2 copies, and no one, and I mean no one would sell or trade a Harby 4 in the weeks coming up to the coupon deadline, so I originally only got 2.
I tried to get the LCS owner to sell me his Unity Red or trade for a Harby Pink but it was always no go. Never see them at the shows, at least in this area of the country.

Since there have already been 30 votes,
I'll go ahead and 'chime in'.

I once had a policy that I considered Unity Red worth two Harbinger 0 Pinks.
That is, I was buying Unity Red for $30 and Harbinger 0 Pink for $15 each.
(Ebay 1997-98 timeframe)

In my mind, I still consider it a "2-for-1" kind of thing.
