Valiant Entertainment has been in touch with me and has promised that the fans will get the first look
at the details for the Harbinger: The Beginning hardcover which was solicited online today.
Look for those details here at ValiantFans.com this coming Monday (5/28).

As I predicted in my "helpful hints" back in August 2006,
"VALIANT WILL RETURN. When it does, both the party and the riot will be right here."

Looks like I was right, and we'll have a hardcover collected edition in our hands in August 2007!

What's more, the Monday announcement should be two days before Previews
is available in comic shops, so we should even know more than the dealers do. Wink

Today was also the day that the Valiant Entertainment website went live...
and the placeholder clearly shows us a familiar compass... 'bout time!
I don't know what will be shared with the mailing list, but I've already signed up. Very Happy

Maybe the full website will even be online before we get the book... Hope

It's clear to me that fans do matter to Valiant Entertainment.

Big thanks to Dinesh, Jason, and Walter for thinking of us first!

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

EDIT: Thursday, May 24 -

Looks like the "Monday surprise" was posted on the Previews website early this morning.
That's almost a week before the catalogs are in anyone's hands next Wednesday.

I guess we don't have to wait until Monday after all!
http://previews.diamondcomics.com/public/default.asp?t=1&m=1&c=23&s=126&ai=56390&ssd=

I'm fairly certain that if Diamond hadn't selected this book as a Featured Item,
the fans would have been the first to know anything about it next week.
If it was "just another regular solicitation" to Diamond,
it would have been a better-kept secret. Wink

As it is now, the details are "leaked" early, but since they only posted on the Diamond
website early this morning, I'd say the fans are STILL the first to know.
We're the only guys who are already informed these first few hours...
(...though I would imagine the news will continue to travel fast!)

Very Happy Thumbs Up

P.S. I did not know about the Shooter story for the Harada origin!
Bravo! Applause

Monday, 5/28

Full details for the fans first:

Thumbs Up

What I'm worried about.....? What and this is a what if... The orders come in Really below VE expectations for this...? Lets face it it's been 15 years since these stories were relevant in the comics field. While they are held high to us what about others.

I'm worried that if the orders for this are LOW that VE will be disscouraged in continuing other high quality HC (if thats the plan) on past valiant properties.....

Hope

What kind of sales #s would be needed for a hardcover? I've got a relatively good idea what would be needed for a comic, but not-so-much for a hardcover... Think

Good question. I wouldn't think it would take too many sales to cover the cost of a hardcover - since it's mainly reprinting material that the work was already paid for.

I hope that VEI is going to make it well-known that they are putting this out or orders will be not much more than the peeps on this site. They need to hit Wizard, the message boards, get their site up, and do whatever they can to launch even this reprinting (if it is one) the right way. If it is a reprinting, then we know that the story quality is excellent. It would be a great way to bring new peeps in and rekindle others. Hope

I alerted the two people who read my blog!

I usually interview Science Fiction and Fantasy authors, I wonder if they would be interested in an interview (obviously after the usual and necessary Newsarama, etc rounds).

I do hope order will not be low so they can start doing more...
what is great is that since it's 'mostly' reprints, at least the cost for doing it is lower than new stuff.

I think that since I mentioned Jim Shooter a few times in the past couple years,
they wanted to keep it a secret as long as possible...

It worked. Very Happy

Bravo! Applause

I thought for sure you would've been in the know on that one. I guess Dino is just full of surprises this week.

I think that since I mentioned Jim Shooter a few times in the past couple years,
they wanted to keep it a secret as long as possible...

It worked. Very Happy

Very cool surprise indeed. Kudos to Dino, what a fantastic start.

Since I haven't wanted a book a week before it appeared in Previews before...
is it possible to tell your retailer which book you want if they don't even have the info yet?

Obviously, they can write it down for next week...
but I don't guess they'll know exactly what it is until next Wednesday.

Think

Someone posted a pdf of the previews orderbook . . I printed out the page with VE on it and handed it to them . .

I said "This is coming out in next months previews . . . please get it for me . ."

Then we went on to talk about Valiant for a while . . . Smile

If you plan to order one from Shatner, better tell him at least 3 times. Or just tell on of the other people that work there so they'll write it down. He's notorious for screwing up customer orders then acting like he never heard a thing. Rolling Eyes

A new story by Jim Shooter. VALIANT is officially back. About SQUEEING time. And notice...it all begins with Harbinger. I wonder...Is the plan going to be to make the "new books", which I assume will eventually come once the collections are out, pick up where the old line left off, but not in 1996...instead, in 1992, right around the time Shooter left? Or, will it be all new? I can't wait to find out. I detect a sense of discovery and wonder in comics I haven't felt since the mid 90's.

It wouldn't surprise me if Dino offered a special edition to the fans on this site. May a signed version? He has to have something special for us, right?

Heck if I know... they didn't even tell me Jim Shooter was involved or writing anything! Frustrated

Actually, I think I like it better this way... Applause

They probably have (and have had) existing reprint permissions...
It's the new stuff that would probably need a new agreement.

Unbelievable............The news that Jim is contributing is even bigger news than the book itself. I'm speechless!

I wonder though, is this old material previously unreleased or is this a story conceived by Jim since his departure in 1992 just for this new release? Think If this is a story of recent origin, does this mean Jim is involved with VEI in its relaunch attempt? Think I'm sure we'll have the answers very soon.

I haven't bought a new comic since I moved. I guess I'm gonna have to check out the LCS here and make sure they will be ordering some. And I would so be all over a special edition version.

Surprised

I'm definitely grabbing this. Is there any word on the exact in-store date yet?

I'm also wondering how Shooter's origin of Harada if and will vary from the origin story in Harbinger Files #1. Think

So happy to hear this news!

Now the wondering starts, who's drawing the new Shooter story? It could be prose, but I doubt that. And will it lead into a new Harbinger series written by Shooter, picking up where 7 leaves off?!?!?! (we can still dream, right? Wink )

Another big thanks to everyone who's making this happen! Applause

Maybe we'll finally find out if it was Sting that was gay. Ok, that said-and that was mostly a joke, all-I am very eager to see how Shooter's Harada origin differs from the one in HF #1, which was not bad, but still left a lot to be desired. What I liked about it, was that it was consistent with Harada's behavior and seemed to take place within established continuity, not always a hallmark of the late '93 and on books.

Just guessing, but there is quite a difference between the color originals and the printed comics in terms of how vivid the colors are. Maybe the production requires better originals than can be extracted from the books. The inks however can be extracted and then recolored.

And I totally agree with Frank.

Wasn't there a little back story of Harada on the coupons in the issues? (I distinctly remember seeing a Harada as a child in a boardroom.) Could Shooter be revisiting that or have dug up his old notes?

Not that it really matters either way. Smile

We're the only guys who are already informed these first few hours...

The perfect answer to who is illustrating it, unless it turns out to be just the cards and or script pages, is Lapham. I don't know if he would do it, however. If they have to get someone else, well, Shooter himself draws a little. Maybe he did the art. It won't be great, but it'll be serviceable.

why wouldn't lapham do it if he has the time...he did work for Big Jim at defiant too and I don't remember hearing that they parted on poor terms...maybe Dino and Jason have been talking to him... Think

It is interesting that the artist wasn't mentioned.

Lapham is writing books for DC and Marvel, as well as continuing Stray Bullets for El Capitan (although there hasn't been a new one for a while). So it's hard to say how much time he has, but it would be awesome to see him doing Valiant stuff again. Although his style has progressed a lot since the Valiant 'house style' days.

It's hard to tell from the scans, but if I had to guess an artist I would say Paul Creddick ( Wink ) with Layton applying the inks. The boy genius taking over a company is an interesting story for Shooter to write since he was something of a boy genius himself and was top dog at Marvel at such a young age.

This and the following issues were his first published books. Shooter submitted scripts and detailed layouts to DC and they were so impressed they published them.

Yeah I love the coloring of the originals, hopefully it's more of a re-mastering than a re-coloring.

Any idea why they would do a re-coloring? Something production related?

The strap on Flamingo's outfit in one panel was added through color and not pencilled in.

That's probably ALL they're fixing... no? lol

I don't know....Secret Wars? Not for me. The planned ending to Unity 2000? Again not for me. Otherwise he has been creatively a very powerful force I'll agree.

Fair play - I will not disrespect the choices you make. Thumbs Up

It is simply a case of being my view that not all he has created is great, and some quite bad (which is true of any creative individual of course).

I've going to be writing a column about the New Valiant for www.comicnews.info.
I've already started a discussion about it on their forum in the name of helping to promote the new Harby trade.
I'm also going to be ordering big on it to sell on eBay.
Just doing the best I can to step up and support Valiant!

I guess I've decided it's kinda the same thing that comic dealers do. They have to order in advance too. My only issue is that after 45 days it's really hard to get any problems ironed out through ebay's system. So, we'd be past that by the time it got into the sellers hands. Many dishonest people have used this to their advantage. Sad

You nailed that one, Whov... I'm sure most people are honest with their pre-order type auctions, but as you say, certain unscrupulous people will use that knowledge to their advantage.

I imagine the ones interested have already ordered it from their local shop or online comic place. Also, putting them up for sale on ebay this far in advance is bound to turn people off as well.
