March 23 Unadilla, NY — Sirius Entertainment is saddened to report that Drew Hayes, the maverick creator of POISON ELVES, has died in his hometown of Bellingham, Washington. Drew had a heart attack while suffering from pneumonia. He is survived by his daughter, Mary and his mother, Sharon.

Drew was 37 years old.
This is part of an email I received through the Poison Elves guild earlier this morning...the rest is as follows :
Many of you have written to us asking about the well-being of Drew Hayes.

I am saddened to report that Drew Hayes, the maverick creator of POISON ELVES, has died in his hometown of Bellingham, Washington. Drew had a heart attack while suffering from pneumonia. He is survived by his daughter, Mary and his mother, Sharon.

Drew had been hospitalized more than once over the last several years, but his return to good health had seemed imminent, so the suddenness of his passing was an unexpected shock to myself and others that knew him. Drew was 37 years old.

I last spoke to Drew in January, when he was arranging to submit his original cover for POISON ELVES Volume 11. Drew remained sincerely comitted to creating his best work ever in the years ahead. He had proposed re-launching the series with issue #80 and returning to a quarterly schedule in 2007. He was clear that that was his goal and his intention.

He was a loyal and genuine friend to me, my family and the family of creators at Sirius Entertainment. He is sorely missed.

If you would like to share your thoughts with Drew's family, please send your e-mails to

I don't know what to say....I'm sadden at the lose of one of best independent comic book creators.
What the man did with a ball point pen and no experiance in the comic book feild is amazing.

A great lose to the comic book world.

It also saddens me to see a little girl lose her daddy. I know from reading his Starting Notes that she was the love of his life.

RIP Drew.

I'm going to crack open a cold one and do some PE reading tonight.

There's so much more I want to say... I've been struggling for words on this for a few days now.

Instead, I'm just going to have a Guinness. Godspeed, Drew.

sold...i've actually been wanting one and had forgotten about it until just now.

besides, this is coming from cosmictherapy, which is owned by robb horan, one of the bigwigs at sirius.

so i know it's not someone looking to make undue profit on his death.

thanks for the heads up frank.

Rest in Peace Drew...

Say not in grief 'he is no more' but live in thankfulness that he was.

I haven't actually been able to devote the proper amount of time to looking them over.

I am pretty happy at first glance though and think I got a great deal. I will PM you as soon as I go throught them properly. (#15 was a 2nd print though)

my next task is to get a set of the mulehides...

i've put it off too long considering how much i absolutely LOVE those stories.

i've got them in 2 different trade formats already.

now i need to add the originals.

Damn, I haven't finished the series yet, but I love what I've read. Definitely a talented, angry, sad, funny man. Was it brought to a reasonable endpoint?

not really...drew himself stated that the stuff coming up was what he was most excited about because it was something he'd been building up to for years.

the limited series and off-shoot stuff is ok...but it's NOWHERE near the same.

I picked one up too. Poison Elves was one of my favorite series and Drew sounded like a great person. Sad to hear.
