The Confusing World of Valiant Comics...
I've been thinking about all the confusing situations in the Valiant world.
It seems like a few of these happen pretty regularly, so I figured I'd
put together a list of "possible confusions"...
(Especially when there's no picture available to help us see for ourselves...)
Bloodshot #0 Platinum Error: Wizard's incorrect picture of the Platinum error.
Chaos Effect Alpha: May not know that "red cover" matters...
Eternal Warrior Gold: Two different versions
Harbinger #0: Sendaway Pink confused with the Blue version from the TPB.
Harbinger #1 - #2: Confused with "Harbinger Files" #1 & #2
Harbinger #1 - #6: Neglecting to mention the coupons
Magnus #0 - #8: Neglecting to mention the cards/coupons
Magnvs: Taking the spelling "MAGNVS" literally
Rai #1 through #4: FLIP the book and see if it's actually Magnus #5 through #8.
Solar #10: Second print not recognized by the II on the cover.
Unity #0: May not know that "red logo cover" matters...
Unity Trade Paperbacks: Unity Saga confused with Diamond Unity set
Gold issues: not always identified as Gold
Trade paperbacks: Blue variants not always described properly.
VVSS: described as "autographed" or "signed" but not necessarily VVSS.
Yearbooks: described as #1 issues, with no mention of "Yearbook"
Zero issues: assumed to be first issues for a title.
...And Add The Acclaim Volumes for Extra Headscratching...
Armorines #1 - #4: Two volumes with these numbers (Valiant, Acclaim)
Bloodshot #1 - #16: Two volumes with these numbers
Darque Passages #1: Two different volumes
Magnus #1: Five possibilities (Acclaim, Valiant, Vintage Magnus, Original Magnus, Gold Key Magnus)
Magnus #2 - #4: Four possibilities (Acclaim, Valiant, Vintage Magnus, Gold Key)
Magnus #5 - #18: Three different volumes (Acclaim, Valiant, Gold Key)
Ninjak #1 - #12: Two different volumes
Shadowman #1 - #6: There are three different volumes.
Shadowman #7 - #20: Two volumes with these numbers.
Solar #1 - #4: Two volumes (not counting Gold Key or "Original Solar")
Turok #1 - #4: Two volumes (not counting Dell or "Original Turok")
X-O Manowar #1 - #21: Two volumes
Fun stuff, huh?

Anyone know the deal with them using "V" and not a "U"?DJSpecter wrote:I cannot tell you the hours I spent trying to figure out the correct pronunciation of Magnvs. I leaped for joy when I found out that it was supposed to be a 'U'.Magnvs: Taking the spelling "MAGNVS" literally

Was it just for looks or is there some other reason?

The "V" as a "U" goes back to roman times. the Colisevmx-omatic wrote:Anyone know the deal with them using "V" and not a "U"?DJSpecter wrote:I cannot tell you the hours I spent trying to figure out the correct pronunciation of Magnvs. I leaped for joy when I found out that it was supposed to be a 'U'.Magnvs: Taking the spelling "MAGNVS" literally

Back when I was a snot nosed punk...(i've since taken to buying Kleenex™)...I actually tried...or seriously thought about trying...to pass off Magnus #7 & #8 as Rai #3 & #4.
I don't remember if I actually DID it, but I know I thought seriously enough about it to put a couple of them Rai side up in bags and boards...
Naughty boy....

I used to store them Rai-side-up, but that's because the Rai sides were "cooler".ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:Back when I was a snot nosed punk...(i've since taken to buying Kleenex™)...I actually tried...or seriously thought about trying...to pass off Magnus #7 & #8 as Rai #3 & #4.

Yeah no doubt. I think that we all get it about the Rai 0. Some are glossy and some are flat..some have bleeding, some dont. I for one could care less. Just give me all the Rai 0's I can find for cheap and I will buy them...cjv wrote:Given how much Steve talks about Glossy Rai 0, I think he has taken his, lamenated them all, and is hoping to create buzz so that he can have a new, rare variant.

HUH? What do you mean...I really love the cover of Rai 0 and it is kinda important in the Valiant universe.ckb wrote:You sound line the guy who hoards Rai 9's because it's so "important".DawgPhan wrote:Yeah no doubt. Ooooh I get to tell this story again.... There was a guy in 1993-4 who advertised every week in the back of CBG that he was selling Rai 9's for like $30 each or something, because the book was going to be so "important" to the Valiant universe later on.DawgPhan wrote:HUH? Some people bothered to tell him he was nuts, but he held his ground. I have no idea how long he ran the ads - seemed like forever.
Don't get caught in this trap. You are so much better off buying a Harbinger 1 for $25 than 50 Rai 0's for the same price. My opinion is that unless hell froze over, Rai became Spiderman, and kids dressed up as Rai for Halloween, we would never see an ebay market price over $3-$4 for Rai 0.
Now, if you have some glorious plan for a stack of 100 Rai 0's...covering a wall with them, phone book tearing demostration, etc...even finding a 9.9 or a 10.0 - that's a different story. Buy away.
All IMO. I could very well be very wrong.

Yeah but I am buying the Rai 0s to keep them. I could care less about harbinger. Never really liked it; however I always loved Rai and Bloodshot and I also love the cover of Rai 0. I dont plan on ever selling my comics so that is not a big deal if they dont go up in price...also I would gladly pay $25 for 50 copies of Rai 0 If you have any that you want to get rid of at that price..drop me a line...well not right now, but in a month or so I would buy them. If I had an entire long box of Rai 0s I would probably still buy copies for .50 each...LMK..I will always buy Rai 0's for $.50 each...all day every day....ckb wrote:Ooooh I get to tell this story again.... Well...the 'Magnus' font is the classical Roman serif font, and the Romans had no 'u' in their alphabet. Very, very ancient. Nice contrast to the modern sans serif style of 'Robot Fighter', which was undoubtedly on purpose.x-omatic wrote:Anyone know the deal with them using "V" and not a "U"?DJSpecter wrote:I cannot tell you the hours I spent trying to figure out the correct pronunciation of Magnvs. I leaped for joy when I found out that it was supposed to be a 'U'.Magnvs: Taking the spelling "MAGNVS" literally

Which is kinda funny, cause until Greg pointed it out yesterday, I'd never read it as a 'v' in my life, nor even considered the possibility that someone might read it as that. Different perspectives, I spose.

It's also fun to consider that we have a Roman alphabet....but an Arabic numeral system.
'Higher Math' was literally impossible with Roman numerals, and, in fact, several Roman scholars had said it was impossible to figure higher than MMMMMMMMMCMXCIX.
I mean, how does one multiply MDCXLXXIV times LXXXVIII....?

God BLESS the Arabs!
...and now you know.
