Which Board Members Collect Original Art & Colors?

Post by Vault-Keeper »

Just wondering who shares this passion with me, & what's in your collection?

I have several original pages, & alot of colors. I can post the details, if anyone is interested or wants to share what's in their collection.---SG

Yes, I collect art. I try not to do it but just can control myself :D

My favorite b&w art are the covers for Eternal Warrior Fist and Steel #1 & #2 by Jackson Guice. My favorite color art is Rai #5 cover and A & A #0 cover.

Im really happy to have the painted cover to Rai #1, and every inked page to the same issue. If I can ever track down the inked cover for it, Ill be really really happy.

I hear you. That is very nice art.

Issue 5 was also sold complete (second art purchase I made, same day as the first). That cover is not for sale, but I had a recreation made by Joe StPierre. I know the color for the cover is in good hands.

Through friends and artists I have had the good fortune to pick up some nice art. For instance Magnus and Armorines by Jim Calafiore and Eric Hope. Magnus by JayJay. Rai by Sean Chen. And some more.

It's a very nice hobby where you can share the joy with others.

Now this is a nice happy thread! I love to discuss the original & one-of-a-kind items.

My 1st original art sketch was a freebie from Jeff Masuda at the Image/Deathmate table at the Cincinnati ComiCon in Summer '93. He drew a pic of Badrock (when the character was still called Bedrock) on a backer board (the convention artist special, as I call them!)

I don't have a listing of all my pages & colors, but I know I have:

1. X-O #1 page #8;

2. two pages from A&A #22;

3. a Magnus #22 page coming from Ron :);

4. a nice page from Defiant's Dark Dominion #3;

5. 2 color pages from Ninjak #7;

6. a color page from Psi-Lords #3;

7. 15 Harbinger File Card colors;

8. 9 VanHook signed Solar colors, including some unbelieveable Valiant Vision splashes from the "Genocide" storyline.

9. an X-O color from an early issue, & a Production Proof from #2.

I have numerous sketches, & I used to have some nice "Tales of the Witchblade" #2 pages which I sold. They are hard to find, as that artist usually keeps all his stuff. A friend of mine sat next to hi on a plane, & wound up buying several pieces off of him on the spot.

I'm always looking for more! When my wife complains, I tell her that she's lucky...I could have worse habits or hobbies....:)---Steve G

I just did a recount, and it appears I have 107 pieces of Nintendo related Valiant inked art (some thanks to Sonicdan), most of it being Captain N and GameBoy pages.

And I forgot to mention my favorite new peice I just bought from BWS Studios - the last regular page to the Alpha and Omega storyline. That one definately deserves to be scanned in and shared.

I've been collecting original Valiant art for about 5-6 years.
My first piece was the Area 51 cover of V2 Bloodshot #10 courtesy of
Joe Petrilak. Ever since then I had been actively seeking other Valiant & Acclaim related art.

At last count I had over 600 pieces. In my early days I was lucky enough to stumble across some good art & great deals.
Including over a hundred of Layton's pages through his art dealer,
a big batch of Bob Hall Shadowman pages from Cosmic Comics in Lincoln, NE.,
and a nice set of Sean Chen pages that I bought through his mother.

I don't buy as much anymore. Occasionally I'll find something significant
that I have to have but I don't go ape *SQUEE* like I used to.
Plus, having a 15 month old little girl and paying for a house can change your priorities :)

Since I'm not rich I buy sell and trade this stuff to enhance my collection.
I've had a lot of positive experiences buying from artists, dealers and other fans.
It's also a great feeling to sell or trade to another fan who I know deserves and appreciates it.
When I trade or sell I also like to include
photocopies of art in with the packages. This is a great way to
"share" a collection. (along with the postings scans on my website and Valiant Files CD-R)

I mostly focus on Solar art having a nice lot of early "Second Death" pages by Perlin and Layton,
a nice batch of "Brave New World" pages by Jurgens & Giordano
and over half the pages from issue #60 by Johnson and Ryder.
The ink cover of Solar #6 and page 1 Chapter 3 of Alpha & Omega by BWS
are the real stand outs of my Solar collection. Oh and some recent
additions from Unity 2000 #2 that I got from a good friend and fellow collector. :wink:

Some other stuff I am proud to own would include:
4 ink pages from Rai #0
ink and color pages from Magnus #0,2,3 4 & 5
inks from XO #2,4,6
Lapham Shadowman pages from #1,2,4

Ink covers to Magnus #53,54,62,Rai #15 & 31,Solar #26,28,47,48,49,50
and Visitor vs. Valiant Universe 2. (along with a few others) :D

I also collect stuff from VH2 and VH3. For the Acclaim stuff I mostly
like pages from Turok, Bloodshot, Shadowman. Some of these pages
can still be found at reasonable prices.

Valiant is unique in that the ink AND color art are both desirable.
Most color art is kinda looked down on, but Valiant colors are amazing.
I'm sure many of you would agree.

That about sums it up. One of these days I need to reorganize my
collection and post some more scans.
I'm always willing answer questions about or chat about Valiant art!

I suggest sending Greg picture files of what everyone has so he can add them to the original art section of this site (as long as Greg has space and is willing :) )

Here is one of my favorites...

Why don't we just buy the domain www.valiantcomicsart.com and start posting our art there? Would anyone be interested in that. We could start and inventory like the comic one and keep track of it that way!

It's a great idea. Greg has first dibs of course, but if noone else buys it, I will. I do have some minor preparations made for such a project, btw.

/Magnus

PS, comicartfans.com is a rather good place for displaying art.

It would be great to have only Valiant art displayed on a site. Comicartfans.com and comicart-l are great comic art sites with some amazing pieces.

Ok I now have 1Gig of web space to start with. I wasnt to have a site that lists all of the books and you can select each issues to view the artwork from. I also want to list the owner so we can see who owns a page and if it is for sale. I will probably do it as a data base as it would be easier to keep updated.

I want to have a section to find past artists as well.

I am open to any ideas.

I was thinking Commissions and a fan art section. I might have a message board there as well.
