Bristol comic expo report

Post by Redtrax »

Hi All,

Came back from the convention on Monday night, absolutely wasted, not due to alcohol, but walking around the whole hall and the city for four days.

The convention unofficially started on Friday night with a movie night. It was supposed to start at 7.30pm. When I arrived at tthe Plaza hotel where the panels, eagle awards, and the movie night were held at 8, there was nobody there. After almost 45 monites the event finally commenced with the movie "Zombie Elvis" by Liam Sharp. It was a short but absolutely entertaining movie, the title says enough. It was followed by "Legend of the Fallen" a Star Wars fan movie. Compared to this movie, Episode II was a great movie. There was no plot whatsoever. I walked out after 15 minutes, the horror, the horror. The turnout was disappointing about 10 people.

After a short night, my hotel was situated next to a night club, the show officially started on Saturday morning at 10am. The expo hall were the exhibitors and the signings were held opened 15 minutes late, not bad compared to the previous night. The expo hall was one large hall roughly 20 by 30 meters long, not large compared to the amount of creators, many of whom had there own booth.

I walked around untill 5.30pm, 30 minutes before the hall closed for the day. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend any of the panels that were held either that that or on Sunday. Post-Inf Crisis wrap-up, Vertigo, Roy Thomas, Comics-2-movies, Silver Bullets Live, UK Indie comics, taking over long existing character series, Howard Chaykin, Mamtor/Event Horizon, Transformers, and Bryan Talbot were the subjects of some of the panels held over the weekend.

The day ended with the Eagle Awards show which was preceded by a gala dinner. The awards show was quite noisy as there was plenty of booze available. A list of the winners can be found here:

After a too short night (again) the show re-opened on Sunday morning at 10.30am. The line waiting in front of the expo hall was almost as long as the previous day.

The amount of visitors was roughly these same as on saturday, with a little more families with children compared to Saturday. The last two to three hours, most people seemed to prefere be outside and enjoy the nice weather rather than skulk around a stuffy hall full of geeks.

The amount of valiant and acclaim comics available was very low. The exhibitors probably did not it worthy of their backs to haul all those Turok #1's to Bristol. Among the valiant and acclaim books I did see were some Unity issues of Solar and Archer & Armstrong (4 or 5 for $1.50), Quantum & Woody: Holy S-word tpb ($2.25), and some vol. 2 Shadowman issues (also 4 or 5 for $1.50).
