What comics are you reading now?

Lots of great covers from Savage Sword. It's one of my long term goals to start picking those up on the cheap for a binding project.

Yeah, the covers are the initial draw... just so much eye appeal. But the stories are complex and fleshed out in a way you don't see in comics today. And the art is astounding.

I'm thinking about putting together a digital slide show of the covers and then leave it running on a wall mounted display.

I picked up a stack of reader copies (in pretty decent shape) of the 1970s magazine format Savage Sword of Conan. Just got to issue #5 and wow, it's great stuff. Story by Roy Thomas (adapted from the Howard original) and b&w art by John Buscema. 55 pages of story, beautifully rendered! For only a buck in 1975, that's about $4.65 in present dollars.

I read a lot of the Conan and Savage Sword of Conan stuff decades ago and remember really enjoying most of those stories.

I read volume 1 of Totally Awesome Hulk over the weekend. The trade collects the first six issues of the series. It's written by Greg Pak (who wrote the VEI Eternal Warrior series). I thought it was alright, but definitely not that great. It was a quick read and the art was well-done, but a lot of the characters felt a bit flimsy to me (or "off" like Tony Stark).

I grabbed it through Kindle Unlimited. I doubt I will pay to read any of the other trades in the series.

One of the minor drawbacks is that the stories are rife with different nations and tribes that all have exotic sounding names. But because you really don't have much history or mental pigeonholes for them, they soon all blur together and so the factional aspect of who's warring against who is a little lost.

The fact that many of the factions are desert based (in some the stories I've read through) means that they all dress similarly. And since it's all b&w, there are no color cues either.

But the stories are so long that there's a lot of room for meaningful dialogue, exchanges and story aspects. It really does read quite differently than modern comics.

I picked up the new Conan #1 by Marvel. I went in with low expectations. I will be adding this to the pull list. Dialogue and art are top notch. I was a big fan of Dark Horse's version, but I am excited after reading issue #1. Looks like Conan is in good hands.

It was good, but not enough to pull me in. I like both Aaron and Asrar a lot, but I think I got enough Conan with the Busiek and Nord DH run.

Gunning for Hits #1 from Image. First Image #1 that I'm stoked about since Ice Cream Man 1. If you have ANY interest in the music industry, I'd recommend trying this out. The writer set up a world, developed characters and lays out the music industry very well in one issue.

Wow.... I might have to check this out. I really liked the Dark Horse series, but I only followed that from the first series through the beginning of the Conan: The Cimmerian run. I haven't ordered this, but if #1's are still hanging out at the LCS maybe I'll check it out.

I was a big fan of Conan at Dark Horse, especially when Truman and Giorello were the creative team. Issue #2 from Marvel was good as well. The series has the same fun, creative energy Dark Horse used to have with Conan.

I am late to the party but I have very recently started on the Faerberverse via tpbs.

Really enjoyed Secret Identities, Dynamo 5 volumes 1 and 2 were excellent, and I have almost finished Gemini.

I am just wondering if Anti-Hero is part of the line? Anyone able to answer that? Thanks in advance.

Since posting my question, I remembered I had a dormant twitter account, reactivated it and asked Faerber and he kindly responded that there are some small links to the wider Faerberverse.

I am acquiring those books so will probably hit them after concluding D5.

D5 was awesome. I bought 2 of the covers from that series!

Really enjoying D5, and I also thought Gemini was great - the set up at the end is begging for more stories with the characters.

I've recently read everything of Junji Ito's work that's been translated and published in English. That man's imagination is amazing.

Now to catch up with all the non-official translated works online (hey, if they've not been published in English yet they're fair game)

After reading Mr. Miracle last year, I picked up Female Furies today....what a waste of money. Bad writing, stereotypes of women that did nothing to enhance the story, and the use of Big Barda made no sense nor supported the continuity of the Mr. Miracle series.

Currently reading the third volume of Aspen's Jirni, a kind of 'female Conan with genies'. Two of five issues in and it seems slow going. I've enjoyed the previous volumes though, so hoping it'll pick up in the next issue.

Ten issues into Immortal Hulk and I am absolutely loving this title. Thought the title of “Immortal” Hulk was going to play out as a cheap gimmick - boy, was I wrong!

Really dark tone to the series, with a really rich depth to the character that I don’t think he’s had in *years*. Dips more than it’s toes into the horror genre, which is perfectly suited to this monster character - and also feels *connected* to all the important elements from the Hulks long history. Just an absolute treat to read as a long-time fan who hasn’t read a new Hulk comic in about 6 years now.

And now 13 issues in - there was a moment in that latest issue that actually brought a real tear of joy to my eyes while reading it... the dialogue is just so powerful, especially when the writer is dealing with some really deep & personal emotional material tied to the mental states of both Banner & the various Hulk personas that have all evolved over the years. And Al Ewing juggles this stuff deftly in the midst of a crazy, full-on, intense scenario that brings a whole new element into the Hulk mythos.

This series continues to earn & cement its place as one of the best Hulk stories ever written. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

i enjoyed Volume 1. Not sure I care for Faustus being the potential villain, but I like the concept being explored here.

Dude! I just had a look at Alex Ross’ website on a whim to see if he had any of the Hulk covers available... he does... for the low asking prices of either $15k or $20k each!!
