Re: Bound books
Called the binder yesterday prices have gone up.(2009)
We do not have the industrial binding process you have in the states.
They are stiched in sections here, and bound. Very very little gutter loss, and ost things offered as standard.
But just cannot justify the price. £45 per book.
Well I can justify the price, but cannot afford it.
So back to hand binding my own. I have experimented unsuccessfully, will try again.
With over a 120 books to bind, I will get better at it sooner or latter.
Of to check suppliers of buckrum.

I will let you know about the pricing of my books when I get them back.
Bribri.. I sent a copy of your pic to the bindary so they would give me the same treatment as you
I sent the books out last week.. they emailed me on Monday stating that they had been received... lets see how long it will take to get them back

My books have been averaging $25 - $30 each (plus shipping). And I believe they may be swamped recently. I sent 8 books to them the first week of February and haven't received them yet. Although, I have checked in with them and believe they're almost done. So, 6-7 weeks...?

I'm excited to get my Geomancer/PSI-Lords flipbook back to see how it turns out. Hopefully it doesn't suck! Here's the mock-up I gave to H&R:

Re: Bound books
Hey guys. Can you tell me which cloth you used on the outside? As in which buckram you ordered or the leather substitute? I will look at the images above and see what I will order.

Re: Bound books
I use Buckram. Herring & Robinson doesn't offer different types of Buckram. They only offer different colors of Buckram. So, if there are different types of Buckram, I am not aware of what they might be.
Here is link to the Buckram info:

Re: Bound books
I don't believe H&R has ever had the request before. When I sent them the mock-up they were quite surprised and said they'll have to give it a shot. They're not even sure if it will work! So, I might be tossing out money too!!!
We'll see...

Re: Bound books
I haven't posted in this thread for a long while. I was going to post pictures tomorrow, but I see that H&R actually took pics of my Valiant books and posted them on the website.

I did all of the Pre-Unity books in publication order listed on this site. I used red bonded leather with black foil and red/black head & tail bands. I also had a large Valiant logo cover die made.
I bound all of the Pre-Unity books minus Vintage Magnus, they weren't actually taking place in the Valiant Universe at the time. I also used the Alpha & Omega TPB instead of the inserts. And finally to make this a complete Pre-Unity, I had my Harbinger 0 Pink and Archer & Armstrong 0 Gold bound it with the books. I will post pictures of those later. I'm finishing up the last few Unity books before I send them off. The only book I need is Eternal Warrior 1 Gold Embossed. Any help in locating a copy of this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I was going to go through H&R, but managed to find a local binder here in Canada to get similar results!
After 2.5 years, I'm only 19 comics away from a complete Valiant collection, so I'm going to put my first books in to get printed next week! I'm so excited to finally see what this thread inspired come to pass!

Re: Bound books
Thanks!
Does anyone have a good quality, black and white, original Valiant logo suitable for making a die from?
If so, could you be so kind as to post it for me?

Re: Bound books
I got these books back in June and took them to HeroesCon for signatures and sketches. I am big fan of Dark Horse's Conan and had the Frazetta Covers, Conan the Cimmerian, and other issues published since 2008 bound up in a few Conan collections. The die was fun because I had to submit the Conan logo to H&R to get turned into a usable die since they did not have one. Oh yea.. Rai as well. Got Calafiore, Chen, and Layton's sig in it.
Here are the Conan books and sketches:

Linser sketch

Cho remark, sig and Nord sig.
Way back in 2008 I was in the greater LA area and went into a comic shop where the first 75 issues of Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight were .50 cents a piece. I got them all and decided to finish that series off. It took nine volumes and I was very pleased.
Here are the LODK books with sketches:

I had no idea how popular Brian Stelfreeze is with fans. Got lucky with this remark and sig.

I am a big fan of Scott Hampton. If I did not move all of the time I would have bought one of his painted pieces.

Chris Brunner remark and sig.
I spent all of HeroesCon on Saturday from 0930 - 1530 (minus a 20 minute packed lunch break) getting sigs and sketches. I didn't take pics of all the sigs but I was pleased to get a Michael Golden sig in of the LODK books where he had contributed a cover. Biggest regret is not buying a blank Valiant cover and having them sign it.

Ed, I thought you didnt collect comics any more? Did you make these to sell or is it that you dont collect new comics and still have your old ones?

Re: Bound books
I stopped collecting comics in September of 1994, the month I opened my store. I took ALL of my inventory to the store and over the years sold it. The only things I kept were my XOs, Solars, and the BWS A&As and Conans. I had holes in runs due to laziness of missing issues here and there. Earlier this year, I filled the holes after I found THIS POST.Aram wrote:Ed, I thought you didnt collect comics any more? The only things I have collected since I opened the store are original art and hardcover graphic novels. I have a VERY Large collection of hardcovers, including a lot of stuff that will make you cringe if you look on ebay, because they have been out of print forever (All of the early Absolutes, First Walking Dead Slipcase, New X-men Omnibus, Batman/Grendel HC, original Graffiti Watchmen HC, and so on). SO binding these and doing them as hardcovers became a pretty obvious step. My inspiration was Steve Topper's dust jacket designs from this thread, but when I started looking into producing dust jackets, it seemed like too much work, so I just made them book covers. Steve sent me files for the dust jackets and I used limited elements from them to design my own (mostly the small images of covers on the back, it would have been a PITA to do those from scratch).
