I was watching Orphan Black over the weekend, right at the end of the fourth season. This one guy looked familiar but I could not quite place him. I looked him up on IMDb, he was Hubbel Urich on EFC.

Love that show, and super proud that it’s a Canadian made series.

No joke, I went out for dinner with my wife and some friends at a restaurant in Toronto years ago (I think it was in 2017 or 2018 - sometime shortly after the show had just ended), and our waiter ended up being Josh Vokey who plays the nerdy scientist Scott Smith on the show.

It was a surreal moment - nobody said anything to him but he picked up on our looks of recognition and at one point just said outright “yes, I’m that guy from Orphan Black”

You always hear about actors working as waiters in LA, but it was bizarre to experience it in Toronto!

I watched it either earlier this year or late last year on Plex.

There's a scene in which Kidder's character spells a word that made me wonder if that is the reason why her iteration of Lois Lane in Superman: The Movie cannot spell words correctly, as a sort of joke...

It's an interesting question, the licensed comics space seems so crowded with companies like Dark Horse, IDW, etc. who's main business is doing licensed comics.

All the big, obvious properties are taken (Star Wars, Trek, Hasbro, MOTU, 007 etc.) so it would have to be a niche or underappreciated property. Then the question is what do the people at Valiant actually like? What properties would they be passionate about licensing and adapting?

I feel like a niche property would only work if there's a great deal of interest and passion for it by the people creating it. Yet in the recent past, DMG doesn't even seem to have that high of interest and passion for their own Valiant properties. It's hard to get a read on what drives DMG, beyond the obvious desire to have successful movies like the MCU. Now we have Alien, a total unknown, so who knows?

To answer your question though, some niche sci-fi and fantasy properties that could be cool in comics if done with the right people. Thundarr the Barbarian for sci-fi and Karl Edward Wagner's Kane series for fantasy.

Thundarr would be a bit obscure, though, heh.

Anything more recent? Foundation and Invasion on Apple TV+ come to mind. Maybe even Pretty Little Liars on Max. Surely there might be a market for that.

Thundarr's comic debut is set to be Dynamite Entertainment's biggest success yet.

Dynamite Entertainment is set to make history, as they unveil the first ever comic book based on the legendary Thundarr the Barbarian. At this year’s San Diego Comic Con, the publisher announced the expansion of their license with Warner Brothers/Discovery. As part of this expansion, Dynamite now has the rights to produce comics based on pop culture icons such as Ben 10 and Thundarr the Barbarian.

Dynamite Entertainment announced the license expansion, and the new titles, at San Diego Comic Con, including Thundarr the Barbarian. At this point, there is no creative team or release date for the book. It is worth noting that this is the first ever comic book based on Thundarr, despite the character existing for over 40 years. A comic, originally to have been made by Jack Kirby, was planned during the show’s run, but never materialized.

Furthermore, now defunct publisher Whitman had plans for a Thundarr comic, but it too fell through.

Thundarr the Barbarian aired in the early 1980s, and was created by legendary comics' writer Steve Gerber. Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, Thundarr and his allies Ookla the Mok and Princess Ariel fight magical monsters and mad scientific geniuses. Although Thundarr the Barbarian only ran for a few short years, it left a huge impression on those who watched it. Despite its popularity and influence, Thundarr merchandise has been few and far between. Furthermore, there has been no continuation of Thundar’s story. Now Dynamite Entertainment is rectifying this mistake with an all-new series.

While there were several attempts to get a Thundarr the Barbarian comic off the ground, they were seemingly doomed to failure. This is a shame, as Thundarr’s concept lends itself well to the medium. The character also had an excellent comics pedigree. In addition to Gerber’s involvement, comic artists Jack Kirby and Alex Toth helped contribute character designs, and scribes Martin Pasko and Buzz Dixon served on the writing staff. These creators helped make Thundarr the Barbarian one of the most influential and well remembered cartoons of the 1980s.
