I think that only applies to Aram. I seem to remember him actually saying he was the only one that received the immortality as a result of the Boon. I'll have to skim through my issues to find it (if it exists - but I'm pretty sure it does).

Ivar has been "outside time" for thousands of years (or aeons, who knows) so he may not even be immortal but appears so due to the effect of time traveling.

Gilad mentions in the A&A 5-9 arc that he was killed by the Boon, but brought back to life by the Earth to be it's Fist and Steel.

I need to re-read A&A. I'm pretty sure all of the answers are in there.

Ah ok, so basically you're saying they are immortal, but by different means.

Yes, I think that's the twist that FVL has put on the Immortal Brothers. They are all immortal, and they're immortality stories all stem from the Boon, but for different reasons.

It's possible that this it true, I grant you. But if you look back at A&A #1 when Ivar activates the Boon there is something interesting. Mechanically speaking, taking away as many other factors as possible, the Boon is a machine. The activation handle is on one side. I think it sucks life from one side and shoots it out the other! When Ivar activated it there was himself closest to it, Aram jumping at him with a sword, and further down the straight hallway, Gilad's body. If the purpose of activating the Boon was to ressurect Gilad, then why did Aram become immortal? Obviously, the effect isn't based on the desires of the user. Unless Ivar wanted the power of the Boon for all the Anni-Padda brothers? Then all 3 of them would be affected equally. If it's not controlled by the will of the user, then those guards which Aram killed on the way to attack Ivar may be immortal along with the dead King that was further down the hallway. Could be interesting to have some immortal enemies as well, eh?

Anyway, I just got to read this issue last night and loved it. Better than 1-4 no doubt. I liked the art and agreed with somebodies comment about it looking like a cleaner version of Hairsine's art. The story was good and I like the granddaughter. I wonder if her mother is Gilad's daughter that we've already met. I assume so, but wonder where she is now.

I'm also bothered by the continuity gaps and snafu's shown in Gilad's history between the A&A arc, EW 1-4, and even the Unity flashback about fighting in WWII. Can some of it be explained by saying that he didn't just live in the hut after quitting in the 1800's? Yep. He could have gotten in fights and wars but not been serving the Earth. But then why does the Earth ressurect him in the 60's? The real problem is reconcilling EW1-4 with the 'Wrath of the Eternal Warrior' arc in A&A as others have said. I really wonder if they had a pitch from Pak and knew he was working on a story, but didn't have all the details. So they let Van Lente write him in based off the original Eternal Warrior premise from the 90's. Then later, Pak's story got altered and turned into a battle against the Gods and killing the Earth Goddess. And then it just didn't all fit together anymore.

Can they explain the proccess of his immortality, the origin of his deal to serve the Earth, and how the Houses of the Gods work with a #0 issue? Sure, and I look forward to it. But explaining the A&A 5-8/EW 1-4 dichotomy is gonna take some major writing gymnastics. I'd love for them to try though (although fitting that in with the rest of the needed clarifications above could be tough to squeeze into one issue). Leaving it unaswered just rankles.

The one benefit of me reading this issue so late is that I heard about the Rai #1 coming in May before reading EW #5. So I know that the whole world isn't a wasteland. Japan is uber-technological and not everyplace got nuked (or they were able to recover). Looking forward to see if there is any crossover with Rai still to come in this arc of EW.
