Re: Fables is good
I've been busy and haven't read the last 2 or 3 issues, but I plan on putting them together and reading the whole thing at once. This series still rocks, and for me, what got me not to consider going back to trades-I'd never drop it-was how quickly Willingham recovered from the fumble that was The Crossover.ian_house wrote:Anyone read the Xmas issue? Alot of new mysteries popping up and quite a nice done in one story at the same time. It's bought the series an extra few issues of me reading.

Re: Fables is good
I recently finished reading volumes 1-18 of the Fables TPBs over the course of the last few months. I didn't realize I am almost caught up to the series - the next TPB is due out in December '13.
Overally, really enjoying it and it's something I actually got my wife to read (and really enjoy!). Some of the volumes were kinda weak but overall, this a very strong series - compelling plot and a big enough cast of characters to always keep things interesting. Just as I tire of the focus on one character, they shift to something else. I was a little bit bored with the last volume, Cubs in Toyland, but I think I'm in this for the long haul. I'm tempted to go back and reread it all again, but I've got other TPBs I've been putting off since Christmas to finish Fables.
Also! - just last month, it was announced that a Fables movie is in the works, from the producers of the Harry Potter franchise. Considering its crossover appeal into the female audience, if this movie is done well, it could be huge. Dropped Fables about 6 months back and not really missed it, it's not been great for a LONG time. Shame really, I think they really lost their way when they lost the town as it was the heart of the book in a way.

Re: Fables is good
I've been thinking about a little bit more now about Fables now that I've finished reading that huge chunk, and after discussing it with the wife. I still like the series overall, but my complaint is the villains. It seems like nearly every villain is talked about in whispers and built up to be this ridiculously ominous *SQUEE*-kicking threat...and then they're dealt with relatively quickly. I was excited to finally see Baba Yaga get out and have her be these serious, menacing villain...and then Bufkin takes care of her in like 3 issues. Kind of a letdown.
I like how comic books have recurring villains (Magneto, Joker, etc.) that come back time and again...but it doesn't really seem that like happens with Fables.

I never EVER would have guessed that of all the fables extant, my favourite would be Gepetto.

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

It would be cool if Gepetto returned to being the baddie.
Maybe he could start a civil war.

I thought it took some time and planning to take out Mr. Dark, and even then they had to rely on the North Wind in the end. I was not sure how many more would die at Dark's hands.chriskay99 wrote:I've been thinking about a little bit more now about Fables now that I've finished reading that huge chunk, and after discussing it with the wife. Has everyone Peter and Max cause that prose novel was pretty great?
Also if you get a chance Vol 2 of Fairest was like a J-horror pastiche and was done surprisingly well.

Re: Fables is good
I picked this up in the NYC library and was blown away. I made it through about book 8 or 9. Such great stories. Definitely one of my all time favorite books but I'm sorry to hear it's not as good as it was. I've read the same sentiment on other sites as well.
One of my favorites moments is when Boy Blue enters the Homeland through the dragon's skull. It was great how the art changed.
Such a clever use of existing characters.
