Bloodshot looking like a fag?? NO WAY but I can see it in Solar.

Yeah, the cloud base on the other statue was a bit much for me. Way too Care Bears for a comic character, IMO. Why not just slide a little pink tutu on him?

Keeping in mind that Michelangelo had an affinity for the feminine (as well as being gay...not that the two are connected, but they relate) and most of his work displays this, up to and including the aforementioned Sistine chapel. There aren't a lot of examples of "pure" masculinity in his work (which, of course, was typical of Renaissance art in general, so it's not that surprising.) Obviously, being "limp wristed" wasn't really a cultural issue back in 16th century Italy, but Michelangelo definitely had a feminine vibe in most...if not all...of his work.Sean Chen wrote:Before I commit to casting multiples of the Solar statue, I want to get opinions of the gayness factor brought up by ZephyrWasHot. Even though the molds have been made, the "limp wristed" hand in question is actually a separate mold all itself. If changes to the right hand are in order, it would really not be that much trouble.
There are a diffrent schools of thought when it comes to portraying Solar. Some draw him as a muscular Superman type, others see him as lythe and graceful wielding the power of a god so physical muscles aren't his thing. The statue shows Solar in the typical BWS pre-Raphaelite lyrical pose that has all the power in his fingertips to obliterate a planet.
The hand in question alludes to the famous Michelangelo portrayal of God imparting life into Adam with a touch of a fingertip. To me it was an attempt to show power with or through grace.
And if you don't believe me, check out David's facial features sometime.
Also keeping in mind that BWS' has never REALLY drawn men as very MASCULINE. His Conan is a perfect example.
I was actually half kidding about the hand, but it struck me as a VERY feminine pose instantly...and, I understand that the character isn't the most masculine out there (a la Miracleman), but he is certainly heterosexual (not that that REALLY matters), and the effeminate pose is....
I dunno....
Not keeping in character I suppose.
I'm not a statue/action figure guy in the first place, but if I were....I don't think I'd be interested in this piece as is.
Not that there's anything wrong with the feminine, but on a male it's....well....off-putting to say the very, VERY least.
(To me.....men should be, well, masculine, and women should be feminine. I understand that this isn't how the WHOLE world works, but hey....sue me.

If you don't want to look up and see a red flaming homo on your mantle...

I try to keep my red flaming homos off the mantle.
They absolutely RUIN the stained wood finish....

It's scary how much we think alike....someone might start to think we're the same person........400yrs wrote:I guess I'm in the minority here. I'd like a more manly hand pose. Although I do see the whole Michaelangelo thing going on there and think it looks cool, it makes me think the next thing Solar would do is snap his fingers and say, "Uh, uh, girlfriend, you betta not talk bout my baby daddy."
I think the tilting of his head is enough to show the BWS influence, but either way is fine by me. I don't think the open hand thing would work as well if this was ever to be mass-produced though.

Oh, and for the record, his fingers don't necessarily need to be closed. There's an infinite world of difference that can be conveyed just by straightening his wrist just a bit.Sean Chen wrote:
I think a poll is in order. I can change the hand to close the space between his fingers and the thumb and align them directly forward as if he is about to unleash a blast beam (ala Nexus), or leave it as is.

Right now, he looks like the Fairy Godmother, and just the sweetest loving tap will solve all the world's problems. Or, he's one of the Queer Eye Guys pointing to some FABULOUS outfit to wear.
However...even a touch can be firm and masculine.

(and....Chen saw the same thing I did.

BTW....try and experiment....you (men)....point at something as if you are about to lightly touch it (like a stove) and see where your OTHER fingers (naturally) go.
Then ask your women-folk to do the same thing.....
See what happens.

Sorry. I'll try to start disagreeing with you from now on.

So, the Donkey Punch, Angry Dragon, Snowmobile, Change Machine, Dirty Muskie, Cleveland Steamer, Pittsburgh Platter, Chili-Dog, Roman Helmet, German Knuckle Cake, Swiss-Army Knife, and the Alabama Hot Pocket are out of the question?ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:Dude. I think this might be the most awful and funny thing you've ever posted. I guess you don't want to know about the Gaylord Perry, Rusty Trombone, Egyptian Tea-Bag, Fish-Eye, Pasadena Mudslide, Mini-Van, Morroccan Meatball, Bulgarian Gas-Mask, Disappearing Panda, Raspberry Beret, San Juan Capistrano, Boston Pancake, or Big-Boy Combo, right?

What I'm wondering is: Why take criticism from someone that has stated that he/she is not interested in buying one anyways?depluto wrote:And I don't think it looks gay ... he looks like a dude way past caring what people think. Maybe the head being turned so far adds to it (I took the gesture to be almost careless but at the same time Solar is kind of intently following things).
I like it as is, Sean.

Why try to discourage people from buying one when the creator has taken so much time and effort to capture the essence of Solar. I for one am glad that Chen has decided to take so much time and effort to do this special project for Solar fans, and I agree with this 'original' depiction; mainly because it already appeals to us fans, but also because it may alter the fluidity of the pose and therefore take away the appeal all together.
As a fellow artist, I always say "stick with what looked good to you the first time." A great image is a lot like a house of cards. Once you take out that one crucial element, it may take you twice as long to recapture it or create something just as great.
Besides, I for one am secure enough in my overabundance of masculinity not to even care what one guy and a marine says.
You do know what 'MARINE' stands for right?
