I am still in the process on "learning" how to evaluate a comic at different grades. Thanks!

Chris,

It's difficult to grade the complete book with just a front cover photo. But going by the front cover, if the back matches its condition then you are looking at a 9.6 to 9.8 book. There are no spine stress lines showing, nor corner hits or rubs across the cover. What you are calling "corner wear" actually shows up on many of the Magnus books.

Now if the back cover has rubs on it from being stored without a bag/board, then the story changes. Even more if those white areas you noted are actually parted paper from either the printing process or weakness of the paper. I've seen this with Harbinger books, and recently X-O books that were stunning from the front and back, but then when removed from the bag I discovered the spine had opened up in certain spots.

If you look at the seller's feedback, it appears they are hesitant about grading higher as there are books sold as NM that buyers are posting they were much better than described.

Looks NM based on the scan. I think the tiny tear at the top of the bottom staple will stop it from being any higher. What a great scan, though. I'm sure that's why it went for $40.

You two need to change usernames - too confusing. LOL

I disagree only because recently I was selling a Magnus 12 CGC 9.6 on here, and it had the same defects.

That's where you need to be careful grading everything the same, where CGC will take note of common defects they start to note after processing many issues. And where some of us have seen 20-30 of a given book, they see hundreds.

Oh, I've seen many hundreds of each pre-unity book... :D

I try to distinguish my grades from CGC grades by using numbers when I am referencing CGC. I was saying *I* would grade it NM based on the scan, CGCs opinion may differ. There's nothing in the scan the tells me CGC wouldn't give it a 9.8. They do tend to "overlook" minor bindery problems. I would lean 9.6 because of the combination of the "Valiant corner" and the staple.

The ckb variant of the Overstreet grading scale has "NM or better" as the top grade, NM is next.

I saw that last night, along with the Magnus 0 that was listed. I thought the Magnus would go a little higher than it did.

At the Philly Con I saw an X-O 1 in 9.4 for $100 and a Solar 10 in 9.6 for $200 on Friday. Both were gone on Sunday. I have no idea if they sold or how much the actual sale was but to have these as legit asking prices was surprising. Also there was a very good buzz surrounding Valiant overall and much praise for Cary Nord.

If people are buying even with statements like "I am not a professional grader, so I'm not going to attempt a grade" in a listing, that proves things are hot again.

Do you think I can start using the line "I am not a professional buyer, so I am not even going to attempt to pay" and still have the seller ship the product?

I think IF I can ever bring myself to selling some of my comics (I need to) then I would have to say the "not a professional grader" thing, because there are too many people that are anal about the grade of a comic and I look at that as a protection from them. For many years, I thought I knew what NM was, then I got a CGC'd 9.6. It was a real wake up call to compare my books to this one.

So, to avoid the wrath of the comic collector, I'd rather take some good photos and let them try to decide the grade. It's got to be better than me saying "NM" when it's VF-, right?

My point was that there is a pretty insane difference between my "NM" comics and what was in the 9.6 slab.

(Basically, I guess I'm saying my comics are in :censored: condition  )
