I picked up a copy of one of the very first comic books I ever owned today.

When I was about 7 years old or so, my dad came home from work one night and gave me a pack of comics he had picked up at the grocery store. It was one of those packs where there were 5 or 6 random comics packaged together for one price. One of those was Captain America #235 (there was also a West Coast Avengers, but I don't remember the others). I LOVED it and read it over and over and over again. I think this was what really turned me on to comic books as a child.
When I was about 10, I sold all my comics in a garage sale (mom can't take the blame for that - it was my idea) including my very tattered and well-read CA 235. For the past couple of years or so, whenever I've been lucky enough to visit a comic shop, Captain America #235 has always been the first thing I've looked for. And today, I finally found it.

comics from childhood =

Bizarre cover, but a great story behind wanting the book!Heath wrote:I picked up a copy of one of the very first comic books I ever owned today.

I've got two issues that really stick out for me like that - Uncanny X-Men 309 and Secret Defenders 12. I still have both.

Sal Buscema drew it, but I don't remember the inker (although a letter in the letters page mentions Don Perlin inking over Buscema in a previous issue). Frank Miller has a credit as a "Watertower Consultant." Another interesting thing is the second letter in the letter's page is from Kurt Busiek.cobra_commander wrote:Who drew that issue Heath?
After reading it again after all these years (and man, it sure brought back some memories!) I'm going to track down the surrounding issues because this issue appears to be the middle part of a story arch.

I did that with a Flash issue from my youth, good times.Heath wrote:Sal Buscema drew it, but I don't remember the inker (although a letter in the letters page mentions Don Perlin inking over Buscema in a previous issue). Thanks for answering my question, wasn't sure what slabbed copies were bringing...and it was luck, couldn't believe there were no other bidders.

This last lot was 1 of 3 I was trying for and had the least amount of books I wanted. I would have had another lot of 100 if my dang browser would have been fast. I will most likely end up stripping out a few of the books I wanted and then selling most of it in my ongoing attempts to fill my Uncanny X-Men, Amazing Spider-Man, Detective Comics, Batman and Adventure runs. Been having a lot of sucess with Batman and Tec. I have gotten 100+ Batman and 300+ Tec issues averaging about $1-2 ea. just in the last 3 months or so. Can't complain.....

Details on the Amazing Fantasy #15: first off, sorry for the delayed response...first time on line in a few days! I was set up at a 2 day mini-convention in Nashville, TN. Dale Roberts (from Kentucky) had this book marked at $4K. The last couple of AF 15 I had, were store copies for sale, so somehow (even though it's my store) it never felt like "mine".
Lately, I've been picking up a few things here and there with long-term goals in mind. I saw this book, which grades a fairly solid VG, and instantly wanted it, even though Dale was over-guide. Then again, what Amazing Fantasy #15 do you ever see that ISN'T over guide?!? I made him a $3600 offer, which I thought was pretty fair. He also thought it was fair, but declined, due to the fact he just picked it up, and had a couple of other shows coming up. He told me that he would decline my offer, but that if he still had at the end of November, he would call me and we could do a deal then. I gave him my card, etc.
Upon getting back home, I looked on Comic Link, and checked around a bit. It seemed to me that the $4K asking price was actually quite in line with what I would have to spend to get a solid VG copy. The last 4.0 on Comic Link went for about $3500 or $3600 and it was RESTORED. This one is not (best that Dale, me, or any of the others that have seen it could tell, anyways). Soooo....I emailed Dale, told him I would take it if still available, and the rest, as they say, is history. I'll send it to CGC if for no other reason, the restoration check, and then, I'll hold it for a while. I figure that I'm probably in it a little high, but if I wait a couple of years, it won't matter. Ultimately, it's a pretty solid for the future!
To ensure that I don't get tempted to sell it, I've already showed it to my 3-year old son, and explained that the book would be his. So now, I'm stuck. Guess I gotta keep it!
So that, in a large nutshell, are the details...I gotta copy that I paid for with my own money, and so I can say "IT'S MINE"! Of course, I've already taken to the store this past weekend and had it displayed...just to show off!

My LCS just started doing an insanely good dollar box I got a major haul out of.
I got about 6 issues of Busiek Action/Superman comics. I thought they were mainly just okay ut it's nice to see solid writing and good art on those titles.
I got some more issues of Morrison's Animal Man. They were great but I already knew that.
I tried the new (canceled) Heros for Hire and I'm actually enjoying the comics so far. It's like the Charlies Angels movies but with an actual story.
And I tried WWH Frontline. Incredible read. The miniseries is partly reactions from the "puny humans" left in war torn New York, partly an alien murder mystery, and its all good. I've got to pick up the trades of Civil War Frontline.

I got some of my hoard books for .25 cents.
(EW #6 & #7)
I also picked up these for .25 because they looked interesting:
Atomic Mouse (I am always looking for cool books for my girls)

Quincy. The cover reminded me of the Fat Albert Cartoon.

I also got a beat up Magnus #3, but it had the cards and I just could not pass it up.
And I also got Marvels #0 for .25.
