This is part of the problem with her apperances in XO and Shadowman.

In one she's supposed to be an alien with a human head, while in the other she's one of the most attractive women on the planet.

In X0 she was drawn as the former and in Shadowman as the latter. In the new story she seems to have been drawn like the latter as well (I haven't read it yet, but from what's been dicussed in the new story she transforms into the woman from Shadowman or something(?))

To answer my own question...

It appears that Lydia started with five fingers... "normal human"...
she also started with a normal human body/torso.

Once she had seduced Harold Polk and killed him...
surrounded herself with Spider Alien employees at Orb...
she seems to have dropped the "charade" of being a normal human
and made herself more "spider-like"... having 4 fingers on each hand (8 total)
and not bothering with the feminine body... having the torso from X-O #2 instead.

:hm:

Gasp! And her bandana's knotted on the wrong side, too.

Can anyone explain (as has been asked elsewhere) how she goes from all curvaceous with Polk to basically a bug with a human head when Aric whisks away her robe?

That makes perfect sense... then she went back to being a bombshell to seduce Jack.

Disgust with her human self. Greg nailed it.

She used the human charade to secude Polk, then after she killed him she went back to what she wanted to be, but kept the human head for appearances.

So do you think she underwent more VERY painful surgical procedures to undo all the cosmetic surgery performed on her to make her "Lydia Spears"?

Or did her appearance require mental control over it? When she reduced her concentration, she looked more Alien?

I think that she endured the procedure to seduce Polk, then once he died she regained her body through another process (it's a matter of disgust with the human form. She prefers her true form, right?), but kept the head and hands in order to appear human and fool people.

She then went back to the bombshell form in order to seduce jack, but instead of undergoing a surgical process she used some kind of drug (as seen in Shadowman) that made her appear human when she really was more arachnid.

Why, they must have been plotting the downfall of Valiant. ;)

I'm sure they missed it. I doubt it was due to that.

If Magnus can have 5 or 6 fingers, Lydia can have 4 or 5 fingers. No big deal.

There is a "cover" for the Rise of Lydia story in the XO hardcover...
count the fingers on that one.

I liked the story. Certain things just seemed off to me but a few of them have already been talked about (the wolf vs comando, the fingers). Still it had a good classic Valiant look and was a decent read.

From Shadowman #1 (some editing and excising). 5 fingers, curvaceous (and human) and the ability to transform into something decidely...different.

"The Rise of Lydia" contradicts nothing about Lydia's appearance. :thumb:

If she had this ability all the time, it kind of makes you wonder why she didn't do the same thing when she tried to seduce Aric in X-O #2... :hm:

Theory

Lydia began as a Spider Alien that underwent painful surgery to become an attractive human female in order to seduce Polk and take Orb Industries from him.

After she did it, she underwent a reversal procedure in order to regain her arachnid form, except for the head, hands, anf feet, which she kept human in order to operate Orb Industries in the human world. That's the Lydia we met in X-O and in Solar.

For Shadowman (and this is the theory), Master Darque gave Lydia a potion that made her appear human, an illusion she used to seduce Jack, then after she did that she took a counter potion (as seen above) that removed the glamour Darque put on her, which revealed her true self, the arachnid with the human head, hands, and legs from X-O and Solar.

Maybe changing back and forth requires concetration...and with a big barbarian about to chop your head off limits your ability to concentrate?
