$104.60 for #1 and $129.50 for #2. I gotta say that I'm surprised to see them go that low when they have been selling for well over $200 a piece for the last few months. I guess they've cooled back off again. That's Valiant for ya.Elveen wrote:so did you win them? and for how much?Jay Tomio wrote:I was a little worried for a minute- I was thinking maybe snipers weren't set due to them being VF (the reason why I wasn't going to bid with too much gusto) and I'd be stuck with them on the cheap!

Gives other guys a chance to get them without getting into a bidding war.

I was glad to see a board member grab one of the books, but surprised that they went for what they did. What is it with me and these trades? Daniel Jackson" stated that it was the fact that I didn't have bigger pics last time.... oh well.
We'll see if I can't find another at some point down the road. Thanks guys... and D, let me know when you get the book.

You and me both, my friend...you and me both.Jay Tomio wrote:No. I only bid on the second one, and I only did that (with 30 minutes to go) to flush out all the nippers (potential quote thread material) asthe highest bid showing at the time was $36. I think the winning bid was 129.50.
No idea about the first one.
Very Fine's suffer from a stigma I asscoiate with them (damn that might be another one). I always want to bid on some but I end up throwing them away when I get them in hand - which is why I have a lot of half-hearted bids.
I hate the non-mint.
Non-NM books after 1980 are worthless.
Until GI Joe #47 sells for $100 in NM, a F/VF copy is 25 cents.

One unexpectedly annoying side effect of buying on eBay the last 8 years is this:Jay Tomio wrote:That's why I make sure I have losing bids on VF's.It's a complex, but most of the time it saves me money. wink:
The other instance (which happens a lot) was for a recent modern. I bag/board all my comics, but if one of my moderns (which I read) come in and doesn't at least look like a strict 9.4, I toss them. No reason to have that book - I don't want it in my permanent stash. That particular case I was a little more *SQUEE* of because they were two copies of the same book and were both variants (I think that was Hulk#100 gray variant)
I really don't spend that much money on my comics, partly because I don't collect rare runs (I just kind of buy what looks cool to me - some of which is expensive, most isn't). I have some expensive books, but I'm not rolling like say how I have seen Hobo buying in the last month or so (who has some real quality purchases lately)! If I buy an expensive book, I will buy it slabbed - thus no worries. My real collecting foucus is Vintage books, and if I spend big (relative) money it will be there.
You can tell the difference in my PRE-1998 books from my POST-1998 books....all the books I bought in person are minty, with VERY, VERY little damage, if ANY, especially for ANY Modern book. If it had so much as a spine stress, I threw it back.
However...since "eBay mint" is anything from Poor to actual NM/M, the books I've bought SINCE then have ranged....BADLY....
So, now, I have quite a vast sea of junky crap that I want to get rid of.
That's a blessing AND a curse...I discovered that the VAST, VAST majority of collectors TRULY don't care if a book has a thumb crease, spine stress, whatever, so long as it's "readable."
So, those books I snubbed in 1995 for not being pristine, I could have picked up and sold as "VF/NM" and gotten happy customers....
And, conversely, I now HAVE a lot of those books that hopefully people will want to get.

Jay:I would have probably given you $250 for the pair and it was the number in my head (maybe $270 w/ shipping) when I pmed you (pre-auction) but I thought if I countered back that much lower than your asking price you would take it as me trying to get over.
Jay, I would have accepted $270 for the set with shipping included. I was pmed by several people, but had actual offeres by none. Oh well. I made some money and a few people hapy.

I have a hard time trashing comics in Poor condition. Unless its from the last 15 years. But even then. The phrase trashing comics....just doesnt compute too well with me.

I'm still *SQUEE* I didn't bid on the #1 too.Fred Chamberlain wrote:Jay:I would have probably given you $250 for the pair and it was the number in my head (maybe $270 w/ shipping) when I pmed you (pre-auction) but I thought if I countered back that much lower than your asking price you would take it as me trying to get over.

As for the books being "only VF" or whatever they really are, you have to make some concessions with rare books like these. Yeah, beggars can be choosers when it comes to a Magnus 1 or a even a Unity Red. But with a print run of 500-1000 and a book that may be buried in the dust bins of comic shops, I think getting a VF is pretty damn good. Plus, I'm in it for the comics. Don't get me wrong, I want nice condition too, especially if I'm buying in person, but I can deal with getting a good price on a great book in good if not great condition.
SELL ME YOUR VfVSS and VVSS!!

Got it. I'll pack up the tpb securely and mail it out within the next few days.D-Lite wrote:I'm still *SQUEE* I didn't bid on the #1 too.Fred Chamberlain wrote:Jay:I would have probably given you $250 for the pair and it was the number in my head (maybe $270 w/ shipping) when I pmed you (pre-auction) but I thought if I countered back that much lower than your asking price you would take it as me trying to get over.

I agree with ya D. I have no issue getting Vf comics if I know that it is a solid VF. I am meticulous with my own grading when posting books for sale, because I've been burned by others a few times.... it sucks bigtime.D-Lite wrote:

By the way, not sure if I'll find any more of these, but if I do, I'll let ya know asap.

I appreciate the appreciation. I would have been thrilled with the full amount, but was actually ok with going via ebay to arrive at a fair market value, allowing the books to go for whatever the populace determined it was worth..... this week anyways.Jay Tomio wrote:Oh I agree with you - I was just not going to pay $375 for pair in VF or be aggressive in aquiring one (I already have what I'd call a NM/M of the first one)As for the books being "only VF" or whatever they really are, you have to make some concessions with rare books like these. Fred, I wasn't going to 9wouldn't enter my mind) to counter your offer with an offer 100+ less than what you asked for (in this case more than 25% off asking price). As a self-respecting Japanese dude that would just come off as to cheap for the image to allowy, I would have accepted $270 for the set with shipping included. I was pmed by several people, but had actual offeres by none. Oh well. I made some money and a few people hapy
I suspected your price was firm as you didn't come off it all when I declined. Which don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely cool with - I appreciate the fact that you brought it here first - for the members here - to begin with

CGC doesn't do trade paperbacks. I believe that there may be another company out there who does grade them, but am clueless as to who they actually are. CGC is comic mag only.Zero wrote:Anybody have an answer to this? I've wondered this as well.Jay Tomio wrote:Can these things be graded by CGC?
