What was that story that Shooter mentioned in one of his early VALIANT columns about how there was a rumour VALIANT supplied MIle High with loads of Magnus 0s? Was there any truth to that rumour? Just seems so out of character for Shooter and what he believes in in the comic industry.Brother J wrote:at those prices, I don't think he's in too much of a hurry to unload them!Unblessed wrote: As for Mile High supporting VALIANT... Guess ole Chuck has some back issues he needs to unload.

Okay, I may be blasted for this, but here goes...
Is Jim Shooter overrated?
(duck)
Now, I will admit with most on this board that what he did with Valiant was great. He poured his heart and soul into the comics, and started something new. But I didn't find the Defiant comics quite as good, nor the Broadway comics. And in the past, while Shooter has definitely had his successes, he has also had his failures.
So are we expecting too much *if* Shooter comes back to Valiant? Did he catch lightning in the bottle once, and we expect him to do it again?
One of the big reasons I think he might might able to do it is again is that Valiant was his "baby". It was his characters, his stories, his ideas (albeit with able help from Bob Layton and others). But since they were so integral to him, and he poured so much into them, he might have unique insights and directions to go that would make them great again.
On the other hand, asking him to repeat is a tall task. Asking ANYONE who did something so well the first time to do it again is a tall task. And he could be a little burned out (After all, Unity 2000 didn't strike me as that incredible). Lastly, they are no longer his characters, so he may not be as involved or as committed. It's one thing to work on something that is YOURS, another to work on something that belongs to someone else.
It seems to me that people are almost automatically assuming that if Shooter is aboard, Valiant II will be great. And it may be, but can we assume that?
Of course, I am all for letting him have a shot.
Chris

It depends a lot on the characters and content. VALIANT had all the elements going for it. Great characters that were likeable and not just run of the mill average super hero stuff. The depth of his writing was another factor. Defiant and Broadway were well written, but the characters just didn't seem to match up to the caliber of the VALIANT lineup.cjv wrote:Okay, I may be blasted for this, but here goes...

If you remove one of these elements you get mediocre real quick. Just look at the decline in writing quality that VALIANT had after Jim got the boot, yet the characters were still there. The opposite goes for Jim's later companies, he had great writing, but the characters just didn't have that special something that the VALIANT Universe had.

Re: Rozanski: Jim Shooter Returns?
Well, if it's still in the stage were he's considering offers, ANYTHING can happen but that's still the best news I've heard in five years or so.jcdenton wrote:Very interesting news from the latest Mile High Comics newsletter:
While I greatly enjoyed seeing the museum, I have to tell you that my two favorite moments were being able to see my friends Jim Shooter and also Helen Hamilton and her daughter Summer Hamilton. Seeing Jim was a particular delight, as our time together has been limited during the past couple of years. After stints at Marvel Comics (where he was Editor-in-Chief from 1978-1987), VALIANT (which he founded), Defiant (which he founded), and Broadway Comics (which he also founded) Jim disappeared from the comics industry. For nearly a decade now he's been working with a video game company in New York, writing scenarios for them and helping with their marketing. The incredibly exciting news that Jim brought to the museum opening, however, is that he's now being courted by several companies to rejoin the comics world. Given our decades of close friendship, Jim confided the details of these offers to me, and then asked me for my opinion as to which one he should most avidly pursue. Quite frankly, I couldn't pick one deal over another. They all sounded extremely promising, so I guess it's going to boil down to whom ever presents Jim with the best contract, the soonest. Suffice it to say, however, that I fully expect Jim Shooter to be back in the comics world very soon. That would be a wonderful development, as this industry could well benefit from once again having Jim Shooter's drive and talent.

Pure educated guess work but I would doubt that Valiant Entertainment could offer him something on par with the big 4 or so comic publishers. Of course, for all we know it's independent companies or parties outside the industry talking to him so I suppose the offers may not be "top dollar."
I prefer to keep the faith also. Bringing JS on board would guarantee a successful relaunch, IMO.Daniel Jackson wrote:So give up all hope just like that eh? To Mr. Jim "BIGJIM" Shooter,
Sir, we are offering you the chance of a lifetime. You can hereby and hereon pledge your fealty to us as a producer of comics. In return, we shall provide you with all the paper, ink, hookers, and booze you would be required to complete the task of creating, maintaining, and sustaining a universe.
This universe cannot be "DC Lite." Tight continuity, dead is dead, and excellent art are all musts.
You cannot however used any of the following names, as their are being used in a legal battle at this time: Bloodshot, X-O Manowar, Ninjak, Shadowman, Jack Boniface, Harbinger, Harada, Children of the Eighth Day, Sting, Zypher, Flamingo, the Visitor, PSI Lords, Punx, Punx Manga Special, or Armorines.
You will also not be allowed to use Solar, Magnus, or Turok as we do not have the rights to those characters. We trust you will understand.
NEVERTHELESS, we want you on our team to make the best "as close to VALIANT" universe you can make. We know it won't be VALIANT, but it will be something that will make us a lot of money. Well, we hope it will make us a lot of money. In fact, just by attaching your name to this project we expect to be able to put it on dog poop and sell it on THIS website. You can see how well their fan projects are received. We trust your name will be received at least 10 times more than that.
Anyway, we want you to write the old VALIANT universe, but you can't use any of the old names. Heck! You can't even use the word "VALIANT" when you're writing this. But we want you back.
If you're up for this challenge, we'd be glad to have you. Your office is located in cube #2, right between Bob Layton and Steve M.
WELCOME TO THE TEAM!
Sincerely,
People who don't own any rights to anything and have about as much of a say in VALIANT as the writer of this post.
