Spawn #299 SDCC variant is commanding astronomical prices. I know it was a limited run of 500 and I know it's Spawn, but I'm still pretty shocked.

It was sort of a "back-of-the-envelope" thought that if a new variant sells for $710 then the Spawn #1 newsstand selling for around 40% of that price might indicate that only 40% of those 500 hard core collectors even know that there is a Spawn #1 edition with the newsstand barcode on the cover which is much less common than Spawn #1 that everyone knows (no barcode). Spawn #1 is a common book, but easily the most important issue for the character.

For about 10 years, I've been fascinated by the collector mindset that puts unimportant (but RARE!) books so much higher in value than the truly important books for the same characters (particular Spider-man).

Spawn is super hot at the moment.
I put my collection up for sale, at £350 buy it now.
A day latter I edited it, will start at £400 and added a note that will accept offers.
That infringed on ebay policy. So removed that comment.
Tried to put buy it now at £500, with £400 starting, but buy it now had to be 50% more than starting bid.
with by it now at £600.

4 days latter someone brought at £600 (today).
Books might be worth more, who knows. I was dead surprised, thinking I would still make a small profit at arround £350. Plus I had got to read them all.

It was reading here on this thread that some issues are super hot (issue 249 was hot, I took a picture and added to the ebay sale.) So thankyou.

Most of the super hot books can be found for £1 at london comic mart. Their is also a comic shop in Ipswich that had alot of the 150-200 for £1.50.

That's awesome, congrats on that sale! Spawn definitely seems hot right now, even more than usual. Probably the perfect time to unload the rare issues. I remember years ago I picked up a #1 black and white variant from St. Mark's Comics in nyc for $30, then later sold it for around a hundred I think. Of course if I had held onto it, I could probably get around triple that now.

Anyone look at Avengers v1 #8 recently? It's selling like crazy in any grade. 7.5's used to be a $300 book, but now VF slabs are seeing actual sales on eBay of $1100 - $1500. I've got a raw copy that I've bounced back and forth over the years with being a 7.0 or 7.5. I'm tempted to have it pressed and slabbed at the upcoming Wizard World to see what happens....

Next Men 14 is a curious case. There’s a Hellboy poster on the wall in a panel and one of the next men reference Hellboy in some dialogue. This issue predates San Diego Comic Con 2 (Hellboy’s 1st full appearance). Kind of cheesy but not bad for a dollar bin comic.

I’m afraid to mention this here as I’m still looking for one or two early issues (got a copy of #27 and it was $10 for an issue that has nothing too special in it, for example)... but INVINCIBLE is really starting to rocket in value lately - the cartoon adaptation is about to launch in a few weeks on Amazon Prime & spec sales are hot right now on eBay! Holy hell, am I ever glad I bought a minty copy of #1 for $35 about 13 years ago!!

That is nuts! A 9.8 is $2500 in sold listings, and $3K with available listings. I got lucky many years ago on a copy that came in 9.8. I paid maybe $.50 and it was never bagged. I had it graded and...9.8! These things never happen.

Dude, that’s insanely good luck - wow!!

So far, I’m enjoying the cartoon quite a bit - although it does feel like some of the sense of humour in the book has been lost in translation a little. I don’t mind all the little re-arrangements to the plot (I knew it wouldn’t be a precise re-telling - and it never bothers me to see changes made to adapt comics to a different medium, when they work well).

I still hope it gets renewed and is able to tell the full storyline over time.

I can't agree with this more. The fact that Spawn 1 is worth more than a few dollars is mind blowing. The print run was over a million copies. I think a lot of the increased interest is movie speculation.

X-Men 53 (1996), which features the first full Onslaught, is rising. Lots of copies have been selling too on the Bay.

In 1996 a one-shot was released in the Marvel Edge line called Savage Hulk. This is a pretty rare book and should sell at a really good premium.

Comic Primer 2 (first Grendel) is on fire! Raw copies are nearly $1K. Years ago I was on the hunt for a high grade copy and best I could find is a 9.0 (after pressing and grading). That black cover is tough. A 9.2 sold this week for $1750. An old label 9.4 sold for a best offer listed at $2200 (so less than that).

If you have a nice copy, it's a good time to grade. An 8.0 sold for $800, so I think the threshold for grading is if you have an 8.5 or higher.
