0 and 12 were my last Magnus books to get out of the whole series. Just acquired them recently myself. Now I just need some duplicates of the Rai series to do the Volume 2 with the complete Malev War in it.turborip wrote:Sweet books THM. Magnus is on my list to get done sooner than later. Just realized i only need three more issues for a volume 1 (0-20). Unfortuantely, all three of those issues are key or pre-Unity: 0, 4, and 12.

Number 4 is pretty cheap and easy to come by and to spare a #12 use the Valiant Era TPB, that has #12 in its entierty in it. Now for #0, thats a tuff one, you can either spend a good amount on even a low grade copy or you can print it from a CBR, which is kinda cheezy but its up to the individual of course.turborip wrote:Sweet books THM. Yeah, I myself only need about a dozen issues for the complete Maleev War volume also, but I haven't been too worried as I figured they are a bit more common.Phoenix8008 wrote:0 and 12 were my last Magnus books to get out of the whole series. Thanks for reminding me about the Valiant Era TPB. I actually don't have one yet but it would be a nice alternative to finding issue 12. I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my Shadowman TPB for my SM volumes. I have all but issues 1-5 and figured I could always pull the first three issues from the TPB.MoonChild wrote:Number 4 is pretty cheap and easy to come by and to spare a #12 use the Valiant Era TPB, that has #12 in its entierty in it. Thanks for the offer Moonchild, I'll keep it in mind. Don't have the money to spend right now though. And like Turborip said, the Malev War issues are pretty common and can be gotten cheap just about anywhere. Which is good since I still need some of the Magnus issues of the Malev War stuff for my Rai bound book as well.MoonChild wrote:I have a crap load of RAI's if you need some send me a list and ill get em together for you, ill hook it up for a super good deal, I just have to get rid of some of these common doubles!Phoenix8008 wrote:0 and 12 were my last Magnus books to get out of the whole series. My first bound book (pics are 200kb-300kb, so I decided to link to them rather than paste them)
http://www.scootfurio.us/junkbin/aa3.jpg
From Library Binding/Texas Bindery Services. I had the Archer & Armstrong die made.
http://www.scootfurio.us/junkbin/aa1.jpg
That dark spot above the Valiant spine logo isn't a stain, it's some stuff on my camera lens filter.
http://www.scootfurio.us/junkbin/aa2.jpg
I'm very happy with the results.
http://www.scootfurio.us/junkbin/aa4.jpg
The only thing I don't have is the Turok card that was in one of the final A&A issues, but the plastic sleeve is bound in the book so when I get the card I can just slide it in.
Next will be a first volume of either Solar ar X-O, the Unity, then probably Eternal Warrior or Shadowman.

Phantom, the important thing is to make sure that the binding company representative understands exactly what you want, because there's some lingo that you'll need to wrap your head around.
(finally found them) The Library Binding specs for the A&A book:
- Cover color: Rust #840 (or PS8405)
- the cover material is that durable pleathery(?) stuff, NOT leather; there was no option for a leather cover on the order slip, and I wanted durability, so this wasn't a problem for me, but if you -do- want a leather cover, you may need to write it in on the order and re-verify with the rep that you're getting leather. EDIT: That textured durable pleathery stuff is called Sunbeam Buckram. Tells you what I know.
- Gold Front Cover lettering, Century Gothic Bold or similar
- Red Head and Tail Bands (it's the multicolored layer you see on the inside of the (top and) bottom of the book spine in pics aa2 and aa4)
- Red Ribbon Marker / Page Marker
- Head and Tail Lines (the gold horizontal stripes on the spine)
- Die Stamps:
#325 Valiant Spine Stamp
Archer & Armstrong Spine Stamp (made for order)
Archer & Armstrong Front Stamp (made for order)
- Panel Lines (horizontal lines on Front Cover) were NOT ordered
And then I drew on the order slip the words and placements of the Die Stamps, and I specifically asked them to make sure everything looked balanced and centered, even if it meant having to resize a Die Stamp or font, so the book 'looked right'.
I had a decent e-mail correspondence going on with James Jasek of Library Binding, who got me up to speed on the lingo, and the order took about five weeks to turnaround after I mailed them the comics -- I think I sent them UPS Registered w/ Insurance, but I'm not 100% sure of that.[/b]

The die stamp(s) fabrication was $38 total. Not exactly cheap, but then again Library Binding gave me exactly what I asked for. I don't have a scanner myself, so (before they had the A&A comics to scan)I had to rely on low-res Internet jpg's of the A&A logo to describe which parts of the logo I wanted as part of the color stamp and which I didn't. There's a couple of A&A issues where the logo is monochrome, but there was always something going on that I couldn't say "just scan the logo on issue X and make it a gold color"... stuff like a second border around the logo that would mess up the coloring of the stamp but not exactly reverse everything; cover art covering part of the logo; additional patterns inside the logo that may have looked neat but wouldn't transfer well to a die stamp; etc.MoonChild wrote:nice job! how much was the A&A Die stamp?
So I what I did was goof around in Photoshop with the low-res logo on a rust/brown background to see what would look best, e-mail the files to Jason, and tell him (and whomever designed the die stamp) a few of the issues where they'd probably get the best results. So we went from this:

which isn't my artwork. I took this off the 'net.
to this:

my manipulations. Looks nice but it's low-res and I really think the lines are too thin to work as a die stamp on a textured surface.

and then to what you see on the A&A book cover, which had to be described in more words that I suppose Library Binding wanted to hear from me.

So, anyways the hit I took on the logo should be to everyone's else's gain, but it was worth it.

Wow that ia really good.
I have contacts for die making. They can minipulate images at my request for a small token fee.
Plus I get to keep the die
.
Hardcover binding is very expensvie in the UK. £30, which does not include logos or stamps, just lettering on the spine.
Their ae cheaper places ~ however ~ postage to and from makes it more expensive than my local binder.
I have worked out photobucket so when I get busy I will include compahensive photos

Any thoghts on the following. and I don't mean my spelling.
as reading moonknightlast knight, (The books I will bind first)., noticed a cover that included art on the back.
You know what I mean, open the book completly and lay it flat, and the back cover forms part of the frount cover.
Their is a name for this but I cannot recall it.
I was thinking if removing the cover from the comic,
folding the back cover in half.
Stitching it into the hardcover,
so when you come to that page. You see the cover ~ and realise you can pull it out to reveal the intire artwork.
Sound like a good idea? Anyone ealsedonethis?

On the gatefold covers that I have on my Valiant books, I simply fold the back cover from the back tot he front, so that when you get to that issue you can see the entire cover before reading the issue. Or you could cut it off and lay the back cover against the front cover. Either way allows you to see the entire piece of artwork at the beginning of the issue.
I dont put a lot of effort into manipulating the hard cover because I will probably put together dusk jackets for my books in the future.. which means I would end up covering any work that I did to the hardcover of the book.

Goodidea witht he cover isea.
My idea is OK for paper covers, but full chromium would havebeen a problem.
Cheers for the advice.
Yeh I wasn't going to bother with thehot foil machine either, but I may not get dust covers done. I am not good with photoshop. I may print off steves if he lets me.
As for design on the cover. I always take off the dust jacket of my other books and look at the cover. I look at the cover more than writng on the spine. Obviously, If it didn't have a dust cover ~ then I would be looking at the spine alot more.

I got my first batch of binds back today from Library Binding, and color me impressed!
http://twitpic.com/stg38 I also got the Archer & Armstrong logo die on the front cover, but don't have anything on the covers of Harby or Unity. I'll be posting more detailed pics over on my blog at http://schnuth.com soon.
I think I'm going to send off Magnus and Solar next since I just finished up putting together reader sets of those. I can already tell this is going to get really addictive really quick!
