I've been listening to the cast since episode 1. I saw Dr. Solars sig at the CGS boards so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm very new to the Valiant Universe. I'm 27 and completely missed it the first time around. A little under a year ago board member Steve Topper, showed me some of his bound Valiant books at our LCS. Because of him, I have slowly started to pick up some Valiant books. Then I saw the cast and thought it's time to jump in head first. So for awhile, I was a listener that wasn't a member of the Valiant boards. Wasn't there a thank you in one of the episodes for being that?

The only Valiant books I have read are Archer and Armstrong, Quantum and Woody, Unity, and Ninjak. I've had them bound in TPB form and the covers can be seen in the bound comic post. I've also picked up both VEI HC's and order the Archer and Armstrong book. I also have, without knowing at the time, all of the WWF Valiant books and a couple of the Nintendo Valiant books.

From listening to the cast I do have a couple questions. What is the deal with wanting to own numerous copies of one comic? I've been collecting comics for nearly 20 years and have a rather large collection, but I've never wanted to own more than maybe 2 of a certain issue. I've seen people here have TONS of copies of one issue. I've honestly never seen that anywhere else.

Are the Pre-Unity books really that good? It seems that a running theme on the cast is Pre-Unity and how it's great. Is it possible to go into a little more detail for someone that hasn't read it yet?

Finally what other series do you recommend? I know that's a broad question, but I'm open to any answers.

Keep up the great work on the cast, and I promise to slowly start catching up with you guys.

Yes, Pre-uni is THAT good.

About the hoarding..... you know.... that is a good question..... one that deserves it's own thread...

That depends....is it tons of copies of a key issue, or tons of copies of commons?

Commons is likely because of overstock, and they make good packing material.

Key issues is because 1. it looks nice to have many copies of a valuable book in a picture, 2. they are trade bait for other books that a person may not necessarily have the cash to buy, 3. they make decent investments.

Not really. Pre-unity speaks for itself. You just have to read it to find out.

In Valiant, or comics in general?

Whatever that guy Zeph says, watch out. He's full of himself, and likes to hear himself talk.

Then we have my hoard of Shadowman #8. Technically, it's a common book, but I sure wouldn't use them for packing material.

I have a hoard of these for several reasons:

A. awesome cover
B. First appearance of Master Darque, definitely a key character in the history of VALIANT
C. It's cheap enough that one can afford to hoard them.

I also have a few hoard books that are not necessarily big $$$ books.

Unity 0, shadowman 8 (for reasons Bro J stated), EW 6, EW 7.

But then I also have over 30 copies of SLoDM #2.

I'm gonna try to get the San Diego episode up tomorrow (Monday) night. I didn't get around to editing it this weekend, unfortunately.

Not like SLoDM #2.

It's that time again, time for another episode of Only The Valiant!

This one comes to you LIVE (sort of) from San Diego Comic-Con. Recorded on the showroom floor, get the inside scoop about Valiant comics at the con.

Get it from the source.

I am always especially shocked when we hear from a listener who wasn't registered on the boards when they started listening! I never really think of people doing that despite that being the target audience.

Pre-Unity is that good. Especially Steel Nation (Magnus 1 - 4) and Alpha and Omega and Second Death (Solar 0 - 4). Both stories are deep and well-written. Like the Watchmen, these are stories that are rich in subtlety and mature themes (mature in the sense that children would not understand them, not in that they are ribald).

I hoard books that mean something to me. Really how it began was that I started buying bulk lots on eBay and would end up with multiple copies of several issues and would not want to trade them off, like Unity 0, and then there were some issues that I was happy with one copy of like Magnus 25 (I had over a dozen copies at one point). Valiants can be cheap to hoard.

What else to read - that's quite a topic. Defiant is a good and extra cheap place to start.

You mentioned that there are rumours of SDCC moving to LA.

I've heard those rumours since 2005 and it hasn't happened yet.
