I have officially started collecting silver age books!
Here's some of the cool things I got at Wondercon last weekend. Nothing for outrageous deals, but nothing too bad. Nicely below guide for everything.
Magnus 3, in FN:

Magnus 6, probably VG/FN

Green Lantern 7, first appearance of Sinestro:

Green Lantern 9, first Sinestro cover:

Green Lantern 40, Hal vs. Alan, and just an awesome cover:

So, yeah, it's beat to hell...but hey, it's complete, colors are still nice, and it was $75.
On eBay, it'd be $250, easy. These suckers always sell for stupid money.
So yeah, #1-up....finally.when I finally got my copy.
You know, I actually saw the book on Friday, but didn't have time to examine it. I kept thinking about it, though, and thought "if it's complete....it'd be a $200-$300 book on eBay, easy."
Sure enough, I looked at it...it was complete, despite massive tearing and wear...and the page quality is excellent...so...I bought it.
When I did....I actually was pretty thrilled and excited....something I haven't felt when buying a comic in a LONG, LONG time....except for the Albedo #2....I really miss that feeling. It used to happen all the time, getting excited and giddy about buying comics....now, especially with eBay's constant parade of overgraded garbage, it's lost its joy, the excitement, and has now become more of a dread than anything else. "What did I get that's been overgraded THIS time....?"
So yeah, last night, I got back a little of that old feeling again...I hadn't even expected it, but there it was. Kinda nice.
No, not at all...it's in excellent shape, paper quality-wise. There's no tanning at ALL, and the chips out of the sides are just because someone treated it roughly. I have no doubt this was a rolled up copy that someone stuck in their back pocket. You planning on slabbing it? That book looks like it'll fall apart soon. The slab might help preserve it a little longer.
When I got it, it had been covered with wax paper, which was then taped closed over it, like a book cover. I think that preserved the paper's integrity. It can easily be thumbed through with absolutely no fear of losing more pieces. The cover's even got a stunning amount of gloss for this condition, and there's no color loss whatsoever.
It was just treated very, very roughly.
One of the reasons I bought this was because, while there's about 1/3 of the back cover missing, the front cover, and all design elements, are intact, including the issue/date box, the logo, the logo box, the price, all main characters, and all wording on the cover.
That can make or break a copy in these lower grades. A book without the issue number, for example, might sell for only half as much as the same book, in the same general condition, with the issue number still there.
This is also the first time I've been able to study the cover up close for lengthy periods of time....I've seen the cover a million times, but never in the comfort of my own home, to examine. I never noticed, for example, that the Beast has furry legs (ditched soon thereafter, revived in Amazing Adventures #11), and Angel is carrying what looks like a large pipe (that's it...let's attack Magneto with IRON! There's an idea!), and Iceman is throwing....well....snowballs. Way to go, Bobby.
Meanwhile, poor lil' ol' Marvel Girl is off in the distance, looking stressed and worried....and doing nothing.
Subtle sexism, indeed.....
£40 for this would have been a bonus dude.
Obvious soiling aside this was a winner to be sure.
Looks like my old TOS 39. I was 15 and it was £14. Took me five years to realise there was no back cover.

I love the Plasm binders . . .Chiclo wrote:Not a screaming deal, but still noteworthy.

99 cent bid, $3 shipping. The lot came in today with a $6.55 shipping label.
I left that poor slob the highest feedback rating I possibly could. My only complaint was that he taped the plastic sleeve shut and I had to very carefully cut that tape.
I converted one into a Valiant Cards binder . . . it has all the first series cards and some promo cards in it . .

I bought one after that one I linked because it came with a full base set of cards, a bunch of extra cards and several of the foil cards.
Ok, don't take this wrong, it's not a jab and I'm not making fun at all.....come on we all collect comic books here, so who's to judge?Jrdawg wrote:

What is the fascination with this book and the chrome Amazing Spidey #300? They were printed much later, so they're only a variant in the strictest techinical term and I consider them to be more of a reprint. If memory serves, they were like $10-20 when solicited. I just don't understand the crazy money these bring. Are they super limited? Are collectors just trying to pick up every possible variant?
Help me out here.

Personally, I hoard all the covers from Spidey #1. Even issues such as Spider Man 13, which is the same but with the black duds. The chromium one here had a print run of 7500-10k though, which makes it a bit more of a collectible.
The only one I don't hoard is the UPC gold newstand. I think its just silly + I like the spidey logo in the upc better

I dont know what the print run was on this book but if anyone has an idea please share it with us, however i do know for every one of these you see there is probably a hundred original 1st editions.
The fact that is a reprint or incentive etc should not make it that collectible but the #300 in itself is a bit of an anomaly IMO anyway as the print run was huge so there should be no shortage and the normal supply and demand rules should not apply but hey who am i to say right

Top stuff dude.Jrdawg wrote:Confirmed this one has a print run of 7500. Couldn't find any info on the Spidey 300 though
Now lets say that Am Sp #300 had a print run of 750,000 which may or may not be accurate, then that would make this a 1 in 100 variant albeit more than ten years late

Maybe Kevin Smith was invloved

Fair enough. Thanks for the info!Jrdawg wrote:Personally, I hoard all the covers from Spidey #1. Even issues such as Spider Man 13, which is the same but with the black duds. The chromium one here had a print run of 7500-10k though, which makes it a bit more of a collectible.

This number needs to be confirmed, but that's what I have going.
I sold all mine for $25 each.

The price is because ONE collector in Los Angeles bought every single copy he could find in 1999-2000, for up to $50 each. Of course, with such a limited run, they shot up in price.
There are various X-Men, an Avengers #1, and the two Spideys...all with the same run. The X-Men and Avengers sell for about $5-$10.
