nycjadie wrote:I bought a small Valiant collection today from a PT dealer - 150 books for $300. It was a great buy. Nearly all keys. X-O 1 gold, Solar 1s, X-O 1 and 4, EW 4, Bloodshot 6-7, etc. I'd say at least a 3rd of them are 9.8 candidates, maybe more. I love this guy. He drives to my work from about 2 hours away, and hand delivers them.

I saw a collection yesterday. It sounded great until I saw it. They all had $.25 stickers on them. All 10 boxes or so. Great books in there. I gave them a pass. Lots of Valiant keys, 90's popular books, vintage Superman, early Sandman. What's crazy is that stickers were affixed to the book, under the bag! Someone had actually tagged the books instead of the plastic! Gah! I bought 20 books that missed the stickers for $10. I felt bad he schlepped the books that far, and I didn't want to go empty handed. I bought 3 Darkhawk 1s that look like 9.8s. The rest are mostly poor shape .12 books, but I enjoy reading them. I just need one Darkhawk to grade for it to be worth my time, otherwise it's a bust. You need to kiss some frogs...
Man you just keep on truckin'! I saw my first good collection today the first time in months, golden-silver age in poor-vg condition. About 400 comics, some junk but some nice stuff in there with some keys, will have to give it some serious thought - competition is stiff, lol.

FWIW, it wasn't the best collection. I will get a X-O gold 9.8 out of it, and some Ninjak 9.8s. Not too shabby. Tons of Bloodshot 6 & 7s as well ;)

nycjadie: Awesome on that BIG score. I would think it would have to be selling the Ex's collection or a roommate while they were at work at that price :lol:, either way, you SCORED!

I love reading this thread and living vicariously through all of you since my 10 shortboxes are too much to handle for me. :thumb:

Hey guys, just re-surfacing this old thread to hear of the latest deals...I've checked out a handful of collections over the past few months, came close to pulling the trigger but didn't....just this past weekend I saw a collection of 2k comics; the guy had previously had a dealer who offered him 2k, then put the lot up for sale at 3k, and later told me if I wanted to have them (I was the second guy to look at it) at 2k they were mine.

There was good stuff in there, but I didn't want to go that high and offered him $1k for a long-box of ASM (there was a huge run from the single digits including some keys: 41, 50, 238, 300 x2, etc. etc). It turns out he later sold the collection for 2700....I didn't have the 2k on me at the time so I had to pass, but this is one I feel I probably could have justified buying (especially with the Can. dollar where it is).

The only other deal I made were buying over 100 modern Batman comics (batmans in the 600s,detectives in the 800s) for $40. They are low-grade but I have big runs of each title so they filled many gaps, and may look to move the titles....I'm in the process of moving into my girlfriend's place, so real-estate will be limited and I'll have to continue to be picky on my deals (unlike some of you hoarders!)

Anyone else nab anything?

Nice! I had a chase yesterday that went nowhere. A flake.

I bought some old underground and 70s print collections last month, but nothing really in months. I'm ready for a new collection.

Where do you find these collections? I can find very little near me.

Well I picked up the collection last night, it was a bit risky because I didn't have the full details, but I'm happy with the unseen stuff. I knew going in about half the collection was bronze and older (1600 comics), but the unseen stuff is pretty solid.
Summary:
There's five long-boxes of copper modern stuff and I'll probably blow them out by the box including decent stuff in each box. I picked out a few books to keep or sell separately (a nice stack of WDs), Low Grade DC presents 26, but I'll most likely sell by title. Big runs of FF, Avengers, Captain America (including all the Brubaker runs), Guardians of the Galaxy, etc. One box had a massive run of DD, including multiples of a lot of the Miller books to coincide with some nice bronze DD.

I'll summarize the list of key older stuff when I go through, not a ton of big books but a large selection of Semi Keys.

Random Stuff: There was also a couple boxes of Hardcovers (Masterworks series), A massive tome called the collection of comics and a few other one-off stuff including the Fantastic Four Omnibus that retails for $160 CDN and the Batman Masterpiece Edition (looks like I can get an easy $50 for it).

All this stuff is currently at my gf's, so space is a premium so I'll more than likely look to move the long-boxes locally before I consider what to sell of the older stuff.

Will post more details as I get time (gotta study before hockey!).

PS This was a collection that I drove the furthest (1.5 hrs one-way) and there was a guy nearly 8 hours away that wanted it!

That sounds pretty awesome and sounds like a person's full life long collection. I'm looking at something later today. The guy apparently worked in a comic shop as a kid solely for trade. He's in his 40s now and is looking to lose what sounds like 4 long boxes. No pics yet, but he's got Uncanny 120-180, Avengers 30s-40s, 80-180ish, Spectacular 1-50ish. This is right up my alley, but I think the guy might think his books are worth more than they are, which always seems to be the case.

Good luck!

He actually just bought these stuff within the last couple of years, locally and online. He said he got out of collecting 15 years ago when he sold all his marvel SA stuff (which he says was better), I bet that would be worth a pile now.

It turns out the FF Omnibus is the much rarer first print, and there's none currently on ebay. I see a sealed set sold back in February on with a BIN/BO of $350. I think I should be able to get at least $100 for this, although shipping is not gonna be cheap for the buyer!

Looks like you did good on that one. I bought about 500 books today for $660. It's all silver and Bronze, with a few Copper. A great VF-NM Run of Uncanny 120-180, some great silver Avengers and Daredevil. I haven't reviewed, but it looks like the Miller Wolverine mini is in NM. Paid more than I wanted, but he said he had seller's remorse before I got to the door. I offered it back, but he declined. I said, a good deal is where both sides feel they were a bit had;)

Checked out a collection today and emailed a few guys that didn't get back to me or said what they had was already sold. The one I did see and only because I was in the area at the time was more or less junk. 2000 comics all 80/90s but in brutal condition, nothing bagged/boarded all crammed into milk crates. I wanted to see if there were any gems, definitely not.

I'm still looking through the collection I got last weekend. I found some great keys and some of the Uncanny is NM. A press might bump some of them to a 9.6. I figure the good stuff is worth 2 1/2 times what I paid, gradedlow at VG (although it's mostly VF-NM). I figure the Slagle should get me to about $400 for the collection, about $1 a book for silver and Bronze Marvel.

Nice! I've found even more Daredevil in this lot...will post pics once I've gotten to break-even. How do you handle the long-boxes? I've posted full long boxes online locally but haven't got any bites but low-balls. I was also trying to move the hardcovers in one lot, but I don't think that will happen so I'll break em up.

I sell most everything on eBay, or very cheap to dealers. I have a few guys who buy stuff at $. 50, so I know I can sell big 2 Commons at that price, but it takes some work. Some are international, which adds to logistics. Honestly, I'm not parsing out Commons that often anymore. I sell runs, or blow them out at $20-30 a long. I just build that into my price I offer, if I want the keys.

Gotcha. I was offering the boxes at $150, but I may drop it down to $100...don't think it's worthwhile for me to ship internationally at commons. This collection does have good runs of books, so I could always break the boxes down and list by title.

So, I've been working on a guy who is moving across the country and has to sell his lifetime collection. He's got tons of stuff from golden age to present. I've been very persistent, as these are the sorts of collections that I really enjoy, not only because there are keys, but they tend to be very well kept. I think it's been an emotional thing for him to get rid of them, but he's also got a ton of things going on, and I know there are several guys that have been scoping him. I had the day off work today, and he finally agreed to let me come over if I agreed to buy them all and take them away. I said a definite maybe, and drove the 30 minutes out there.

Of course, the collection had lots of Image, Knightfall and Death of Superman :D To counterbalance those, there is also about 6 long boxes of Marvel and DC silver age hero stuff. Smatterings of golden age. The 10 cent Batman and Superman stuff is very cool. A huge run of Tales to Astonish. Some pretty cool keys, like JLA 21 (1st silver Dr Fate, Hourman), several copies of the first Robotech (scarce book) and a Batman Adventures 12. A full long box of Valiant and Defiant in high grade, including a Magnus 0 (no Harby 1!), and a large run of Gold Key Magnus starting with issue 1. Many 1990's keys in 9.8 raw that I'll probably grade. Great weird stuff, like a run of Eightball in 1st print (keepers).

This is my biggest collection yet. Equivalent of 37 long boxes for $3500. More than I wanted to pay, but I tend to find with this much silver and 1990s-2000s keys, I can pay $100 a long and still double my money and keep some great books. I'm going to enjoy sitting down at the end of the night over the next several months, grabbing a long box and flipping through them.

Tales to Astonish #27 in there? Last Ant-Man key I need. :wink:

Awesome, post pics when you get a chance! 37 long boxes is a ton, wow! I'm in a place where space is premium so I'd have to take a pass on that, but if you can make it work going through all that stuff is half the fun! I've managed to start to move some of the long-boxes from my recent purchase, and have built a couple of contacts that might provide a good complimentary business to each-other (one guys sells toys). I'll post pics when I get a chance, currently taking a half-day off work to study - so no more comic talk for now, lol...

So I said I would post pics when I had a chance, I've liquidated the bulk of my last buy, with a few items still to sell.

Here's some keys I'm keeping:
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn65 ... ctadfo.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn65 ... ixjbp3.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn65 ... aoluzh.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
*DC Presents 22 is low-grade, but the only copy I have
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn65 ... 1ywzj2.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn65 ... 5shxto.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So there's also a big lot of Thor comics (silver/bronze) that I have an offer of $400 for. I'm also keeping about 15 Batman/ASM Bronze Comics, as well as the massive Daredevil run including doubles and triples of many Miller books.

Sweet books! I like the Forever People #1. I have a couple myself, but it's so hard to get a white one. Yours looks pretty good from the pictures.

That DC Comics Presents is super hot right now. I got one in a collection of 8 longs I bought. That book alone nearly paid for the rest of them!

Went and checked out a pretty large golden-age collection with a friend of mine (also buys and sells locally). He had a ton of stuff in amazing high-grade, but unfortunately it was almost all in titles few people care about. I went through stacks and stacks of stuff like Dick Tracy and Joe Palooka (the latter especially) that would grade really high, but he had them priced-out at individually high prices. I do have first digs on a very small superhero stack (low-grade nothing big) that I may pickup. He was a nice guy and I'm sure I made a strong impression on him, but being the first guys in the house we didn't want to beat him up on an offer on the lot because his ask was so crazy!

I'll post updates....
