Considering the pace at which a story is told in the new line, I think a backup is kinda out of the question. Unless they want to take forever to tell a story.

I don't know. Dysart managed to give us a detailed origin and character development for each of the Renegades in 22 pages each. One story like that broken into 4 five page backups would work. You just need a good writer.
