I wish I had the secret answer everyone wants to hear, but the truth is you are right. There is no way I could have ever opened a comic store other than through sheer luck and force of will. Through a series of events I found myself with no attachments, no bills, no responsibilities of any kind. . . and then I came into some money. Not a lot, but just enough to make it work. Because I do not need the business to provide for my everyday needs, it has a chance. Maybe Ed knows a lot better than me, but I have heard it said that owning a comic book shop is a great way to turn a lot of money into a little bit more. Its a calling and a labor of love. It is not, in my opinion, something that you want to pursue if comics are not already your life. YOUR LIFE. Just about anything else would see a greater return on the same investment.

Thanks for posting that Helios. I'm glad you ran into circumstances that allowed you to start up your shop and I hope it is successful for you for a long time. It would definately be a labor of love for me if I could do it, but with a family depending on my income to live, it's not gonna happen anytime soon. Not to mention the boonies that I live in that couldn't support a comic shop probably. Thanks for the info though. :thumb:

When I was in high school I dreamed of owning a comic shop...

I took business oriented classes where possible with this in mind, and spent time in my art classes drawing business card logos and store layouts. I actually wanted to open one called Jolly Roger Comics and construct the inside to look like a pirate ship with two levels, :lol:

I got to work in a few comic shops back then (which was an absolute joy), but at some point as I got better at drawing I realized my bigger dream was just to make comics instead of selling them. I still feel confident I will achieve that dream.
I like to draw stuff... http://grendeljd.deviantart.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My wife likes to draw stuff too, and she is better than me! [I'm very proud of her]... https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sara-Dec ... ref=stream" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Stick with it Josh, Riley Rossmo was you just a dude who worked at comic shop here in Calgary for years. Now he seems to be really taking off, it can happen :)

Thanks, man - I intend to! The best thing about being an artistic/creative person is that I can do it for the entire duration of my life, regardless of whatever 'day job' I have to work [and barring serious health issues] in order to pay bills. Being an artist defines me, my job does not. Unless being an artist becomes my job! :D I'll never give up on trying to make that happen [well, full time anyway. I do some part-time illustration/design work].
