Occultist just has a variant cover done in the same style as the Gold Key titles.yardstick wrote:Enjoyed the story.
A number of Biblical nods. Kinda like history repeating itself?
Anyone know more about the occultist title a couple of you mentioned? Is it related to the GK stuff?
I noticed the cover pattern was the same.
The cynical part of me thinks the confussion the variant cover creates is intentional with hopes that retailers and fans will mistake it for a Gold Key title. If so, I would suggest Dark Horse try the following variant covers to boost sales: putting the name Kevin Smith above the book's title, putting the word Avengers in the book's title, and putting the DC or Marvel logo in the top left cover of the cover. I'm sure fans will apprecaite all these variants.

In Solar #4's letter column the editor said that Samson was 700 years in the future. You got to remember that a) it's not like they have to start from scratch, they've got the knowledge of how to get back to where we're at all around them b) we don't know what the rest of the world is like since we've only a seen small part of New York and possibly Jersy so far and c) progress can happen fast, think about all the techonology that happened in the last 300 years or even in the last 70 years.KenClarkson4Prez wrote:Ryan wrote:Magnus takes place in 4000, and Samson is before that. I think it's been mentioned before, but it's somwhere between modern times and 4000. 2800 maybe?KenClarkson4Prez wrote:i picked it up. read through it quickly, and i am pretty hopeful for the series. the story didn't knock my socks off, but it sets the table for a good ongoing series. the setting is "500 years after the end of the world". i wonder when that was? 4001? 4005? 5001? i love the mystery. that gets me really excited for the direction that Magnus will be taking..
hmm. ok. i was assuming this was a post-4000 world. isn't it a little far fetched though that the world of 4000 could be built from th ground up in less than 2000 years, when it has taken us 6000 years of civilization to get to where we are now? hmmm, maybe a "teacher" will be introduced in Mighty Samson that will speed up the process?

I started Samson last night and just got too sleepy to finish. One thing that I know is that I LIKE IT. I have NO preconceptions about the book and can take it at face value. I thought that the art was very good and the story kept me turning the pages (my cold kinda has me down at the moment or I would have finished it). I know that there have been concerns with Solar and Magnus but I imagine that some of us still have a Valiant Solar/Magnus expectation that cannot be reclaimed. That is why I still enjoy Solar/Magnus as I do... because it is a retelling of a Gold Key character's story and not a Valiant character. And this is why I think that I enjoyed The Mighty Samson, I went in blank slate. The story was really good (IMO) and as I said, the art seemed to match with the story. The brutality of Baby Samson (SPOILER) ripping that *SQUEE*-bag's finger off was shocking and funny at the same time. I am in high anticipation of J.C. Vaughn taking over writing duties on Samson as well.
GREAT so far !!!

I liked the first issue as well, my reading was similar to yours, no preconceptions. I am looking forward to issue 2, just wish the wait wasn;t so long.Knightt wrote:I started Samson last night and just got too sleepy to finish. One thing that I know is that I LIKE IT. Hey J.C., do you know why the wait between issues is so long?
In a way I don't mind the long wait as it cuts down on the outgoing $$$ per month and spreads it out. But I am due to get my first online subscription books in the mail SOMEtime this month and I am paying only $2.03 for my Dark Horse Gold Key revamps which is a nice amount off the normal $3.50 price tag.

I really liked Samson 1.
One of the things I like about Shooter's stuff is that he doesn't go out of his way to wow you with the same cliches in the first issue to grab you. He writes with longevity of a series in mind so you get a good story throughout and are not generally let down by #2 & 3 not being as full of action as #1. Also glossing over the origins is great as it leaves it open for revealling backstory as he goes so, kinda like in the recent Norton Hulk movie. He just tells the story of what is going on and it leaves you wondering what happened. That "What if?" factor keeps you coming back as much as the good storytelling. I would personally much rather read a consistantly good story that a hot and cold story that ranges from great to bad.
