When the original Shooter helmed Valiant books came out in the early 1990's I was working a comic book shop up in State College, PA. The books were a hard sell at first as the customers did not care for the artwork (including BWS). However they did like the storylines and writing and as word of mouth built they finally took off. I look for the same thing to happen here.
Man, I totally got yer back on this one and you have a GREAT point. In fact, 'back in the day' that is what kept me away from Valiant as well but those stories really sucked me in.

Personally, I have not minded the art at all from the FCBD, Doctor Solar #1 or Magnus #1. I like them just fine... it is 'new' ya know ? And I am just psyched that these two characters are in new stories. Maybe I am a bit OVER-psyched but I am ok with that as I have not felt this great about comics in a long time.

Turok could VERY well round out this 'Valiant Fever' I have going right now and I can't wait for SAMSON as well.

Yes, the cover art does contrast but that is ok, we are getting BEAUTIFUL COVERS and for that I cannot complain. I would LOVE to see an entire book done in that same art but maybe Dark Horse will take that on for a special issue or something. You know, charge a few extra bucks for a great looking book throughout. Heck, I'd be up for two.

I am doing well at only getting one copy of each cover (regular cover and a variant cover). I hope that this does not continue for much longer and when the covers normalize they stick with the Michael Komarck covers as the norm.

Does anyone besides me really want the clouds and lightning to have something to do with Dr. Solar? :D

I posted this over at the Dark-Key forums.
Yeah, this universe is shaping up quite nicely. The interesting part to me is in Doctor Solar #1 we find out about his origin and on page 8(i think) in the bottom panel we get clues as to essentially what I think will be the origins of Turok and Samson. Solar says "Before I realized that, I did something-- inadvertently -- that triggered a quantum wave that's probably still rippling throughout timespace, causing anomalies in reality. " My guess is that it isn't an accident that Turok and Samson are bookending Solar with near identical time spans. If you imagine the quantum wave traveling forward to Samson and backward to Turok, it seems to me Doctor Solar is already effecting these characters directly. I am curious as to how this will tie in to Magnus. Does the quantum wave continue into his time. The other thought I have, if the above is even close to what Shooter is doing, does the quantum wave itself cause the two events(lost land & End of everything) or does Solar end up causing the two event in an effort to stop the ripple in time.

Either way I am totally on board and enjoying the ride. Half the fun of a Shooter book to me is to try and predict the connections and then be blown away by the ones you never saw coming.

Yes , early Valiant was definitely not known for the art, it was sub-standard back then, when the art seemed to be all that mattered. The best art is not necessarily the prettiest, but the art that best helps to tell the story.

Back in the early 90's, BWS was not known a top artist, but he had a unique style that told a story.

Hmm...they still seem to be going for that "Acclaim Turok Evolution" look.

It is a little on the "Imagey" side. I think the actual pages look pretty good though, with storytelling and backgrounds. I do wonder the motive on favoring younger artists over seasoned vets. Is it a cost saving thing or are they trying to appeal to a younger audience?

Good question. It certainly is a different approach from what they've done with Magnus and Solar.
