The missing volume removes a lot from the set. Really hurts it, maybe by half. IHMO.greg wrote:iggy101us wrote:Steve Topper has AMAZING bound books. I know, it's a piece of history . . . but that Rai numbering would drive me through the roof. I like my collection nice and organized.

It's not that these are "bound volumes"... it's that they are "THE bound volumes".
Any of us could have our books bound... for $20 or $40 or however much we wanted to spend,
but we wouldn't have THE copies that sat as the official Valiant reference set.
$2,000 by 16 books is $125 each.
That's barely more expensive than having your own copies bound... all things considered.
It's the set price that's overwhelming.
Individually, I think it's probably a "Valiant history bargain".
These just don't fit into my collecting interest. I respect and thank Bob for offering them to us first.
The idea of Dino working something out with Bob seems logical to me.

Those are pretty amazing and at $125 a piece, a really good price. As Greg pointed out, to collect these books and then bind them, you're probably going to pay at least $125 a book.
Library Binding is one of the cheapest binderys and after factoring in shipping, I pay about $25 to $30 per book just for the binding. I've been fortunate in that I've used the original Valiant comics that I bought off the stands. But go out and put together some of those runs! And these are THE premier collections.
I don't know if anybody has gone to the Geppi Entertainment Museum in Baltimore, but Steve Geppi has a phenomenal collection of bound books from the original publishers. I wouldn't even hazard a guess what those would cost.
Personally, I have too many upcoming college bills for the kids to consider it, but if this were available three to five years from now, I'd be jumping on it.

If someone would pony up the 2K (or even something close, BL might accept a little less) they could easily make their money back, while keeping the one(s) they wanted (or not) and having a larger part of the core fan community having a part of the original VALIANT history!

I don't know that you could re-create the set. As people have said, it's the pedigree that matters, not that it's a complete set of books (at least to me).iggy101us wrote:It seems very weird that there's no Solar. I mean Solar created the Valiant universe so how can a Valiant reference library be missing Solar?
Whoever buys the set should re-create the Harbinger bound volume and make a Solar volume to make the set complete.
If the Solar and Harbinger books were there, this would be a good setm (even for $2k) ... but I have to agree that without them, this really has no value to me.

So let's put our money together and buy them already! Slym was the first to call the Rai volume. I'll be the first to call the Archer & Armstrong 0-12 (with #0) and 13-24 and Bloodshot 1-12 volumes! $125 each, which is affordable for some of us. I'm sure magnusr will want all the Magnus volumes. Keep it going and who calls dibs first gets those volumes. We pay Bob Layton and keep the Valiant history in the community.

Cool stuff.. too pricey for me.. AND .. they wouldnt be set up the way I would want them set up.
Im thinking Dino should grab these treasures.. It would be like passing the torch... just think about who used to read through those books? searching for drawings, fighting through continuity issues, and revewing for the next adventure.... very neat stuf.

Thanks both of you. If that's what happened, I'm in.iggy101us wrote:Great idea!geocarr wrote:So let's put our money together and buy them already! Slym was the first to call the Rai volume. Maybe Bob Layton can sign these and/or Greg can make project certificates for each volume.
