Meeting Steve
I did meet Steve once at Wondercon in, I believe, 1993. He and Bob Layton were holding down the Valiant booth, and I must've been there during a lull, because I remember talking to them both.
Steve listened to my story of my support for Valiant and then handed me a Valiant gold book. He was really nice to me, and I'll never forget it.

In truth, I am very saddened to hear this. It is way too soon to end one of the chapters (as Greg wrote so eloquently) in VALIANT history so soon. I among others have not been kind to Steve and his accomplishments over the years. I for one take those words back. As it is very clear to me through the postings of many former VALIANT creators that are members of this site and the fact that Mr. Bob Layton had the class and professionalism to ensure that a post was made here at ValiantFans.com, that there was a totally different part of Steve that we did not know about and if we had perhaps opened our eyes a bit more, could have gotten to know more about our fellow human and to understand his motivations and especially his gentler side.
I am really shocked at his list of accomplishments. He leaves behind 'a Legacy' and to that I would say a proud Legacy. Yes, we could debate his Legacy in regards to VALIANT comics but lets put that to rest as well. I think in many ways we owe Steve Massarsky a debt of gratitude as we do other people like Jim Shooter, Bob Layton, Don Perlin and many others. Without their work... there never would have been a VALIANT comics. And without that, there are many people here on this message board that never would have known each others friendship. Without Steve Massarsky and many others, there never would have been a very successful yearly fund raiser here on ValiantFans.com trying to find a cure for the fatal disease Cystic Fibrosis... without Steve Massarsky there never would have been many things that we talk about, rant about, reminisce about and enjoy about VALIANT comics. The VALIANT professionals that post here and Mr. Layton's posting is what really made me tilt my head and look at things differently because it is without a doubt in my mind that there was a person who has left this Earth, that had much to do about VALIANT comics and above all... was a mentor.
I find the 'mentors' of this world in short supply these days. I TRY, I really try to mentor those around me every day and through my 20 year military career, I never appreciated my 'mentors' until they were gone. The same seems to be the case here, except there is a man that many never got to know and I have a feeling that I might have liked this man... his Legacy speaks volumes of his character and his ability to get things done and when I leave the planet, I can only hope that my Legacy reads as well as Steve Massarsky's.
Steve... thank you for having a heavy hand in making VALIANT comics become a reality. Safe journey.

Just trying to make the world a better place and pay some respect to a former VALIANT person. I know with all the projects that many of us are short on cash and all with all the current projects and all but if you could spare a few bucks, I will make sure it is put to good use.

I certainly did not expect to return from vacation to news like this.
I met Steve at the 1993 or 1994 Javitz convention in NYC. Someone had told him about my wall display (which was largely Valiant) and brought him over to the table. He looked things over, gave me a sincere thanks for promoting Valiant, and handed me a Bloodshot 0 gold which materialized out of thin air. I remember being speechless.
Despite what eventually happened between Steve and Shooter, the previous posts are correct to point out the role Steve played in the creation of Voyager and the properties we all know and love.
