What you say does make sense. They've already created one new character for their first offering, and if they have talented creators, which it looks like they will, I'm sure they'll be creating more good characters.
If they could get the rights to the Defiant characters for practically nothing, I think it would be cool if they did and used a few of them as well.

The Good Guys might fit, though I wonder if they could even use those characters without permission since they were based on real people.
I just threw this topic out mainly because I'd like to see at least a few of these characters return to comics, and I thought it was at least worth a good discussion.

Charlemagne might well be the easiest Defiant character to reintroduce since his origin could be explained as being that of a harbinger.

What I'd like to see is VEI publish VALIANT, Broadway, and Defiant comics as three separate and independant imprints from one another.

There's no need for all the concepts to take place in the same universe. That would only hinder each series' possibilities and stories.

By having them as their own imprints, each series can continue without being changed to fit a different concept (i.e. Knights on Broadway being changed to fit the Harbinger Wars, or Charlemagne being changed into a Harbinger).

I'm all for that! Sign me up!
However, there is precedent set with the Gold Key characters for incorporating a few characters into the Valiant U, so I think it's perhaps more financially practical that way.

If $$'s a problem, they could always do one Defiant and one Broadway monthly comic a la Marvel's newuniversal that includes all the characters from each universe.

I'd sign up to write the Broadway comic, heh. I really liked those characters.

Honestly, I never read Broadway. Pretty good, huh?
I read The New Universe, Valiant, and Defiant.
I always try to throw The New Universe into the mix, as I think it's just as legit as the others. Same basic concept for a comic universe, just ask Mr. Jim Shooter.
It had some highs and lows, like the others.
I must admit, though, I think early Valiant reached a higher peak than the others. A peak not seen in comics since Stan Lee was at Marvel, in my opinion. If the relaunch captures that early Valiant magic, all bets are off for how great this is going to be.

I never read the original New Universe (newuniversal has been pretty good so far...). From what I've heard it stated out ok, but then it started going down hill (and the start wasn't all that great, editorial wise).

The reason VALIANT went farther is because it didn't have to endure the same editorial and financial hardships that NU, Defiant, and Broadway did.

The New U was inconsistent. Some titles were strong early on, then faded. Other titles improved over time, like Peter David taking over scripting essentially the second half of Justice, and Fabian Nicieza doing the same at Psi-Force.
To me The New U is the father of Valiant. As a hint to what I'm talking about, there was a scene, I believe in DP 7, wherein a newspaper ad said something to the effect, 'Are you different? Have you recently developed strange powers?' It's a lot like what appeared in Harbinger. When I get a chance I'm going to figure out where that's at and post it.
Yeah, I think Valiant was able to keep more creator stability in the beginning. It didn't hurt having creators like Layton and Barry Windsor-Smith to go along with Shooter. :)

Though I don't think Layton and BWS were as imporant to VALIANT as Shooter, I for one would love to see Layton and Bernard Chang on a new Dr Mirage series and BWS on Archer & Armstrong (imagine, if VEI picks up from after Unity it means none of the A&A stories happened in continuity anymore, heh.

Hmm... same goes for Eternal Warrior. That would be a good opportunity for JJ and Shooter to do their original vision of Gilad as opposed to the one that saw print).

I seem to recall reading an interview years ago with Jim Shooter when DEFIANT was launching where he said, in effect, that he was going the direct opposite of the VALIANT universe with DEFIANT.

Since VALIANT was grounded in reality with normal places, people and things meeting fantastic, yet scientifically based heroes and villans; with DEFIANT he wanted to do the exact opposite. I seem to remember him saying he didn't want to do what everyone expected he'd do and just try to make more VALIANT-type comics.

In that sense, VALIANT and DEFIANT would be total opposites.

Does that mean they couldn't co-exist, then?

I wouldn't say definitely "no" that they couldn't.

In comics anything is possible :thumb:

I loved the Broadway characters SPESH Star Seed and Fatale. They would work instantly great in terms on integration. Defiant...it would be a bit of a stretch but its the comic book world...I'm sure they could fit in. But all three together? Make for some great stories...

I 100% agree about Star Seed and Fatale. Two really great characters. One thing that was a bit confusing about the Broadway universe..... did they have gravity? If so..... how did Fatale not fall over?

WOP could work-after all it was another planet from another galaxy that found a way to ours...that's not much of stretch. Shooter and charlemagne-DD I could see all of those working easily. I haven't read enough Broadway to know one way or another-but I really liked it that people got hurt and stayed hurt in Defiant and Broadway (missing limbs)

Broadway rocks! It had straightforward storytelling, clean art, and decent character development. Everything a growing comic book reader needs.

And I think the vast majority of Broadway could be merged with the Valiant universe successfully.

I recall Shooter having said something about one of the characters in Broadway being originally developed for Valiant.
