Doing this will give you a higher value than what we actually have. I dont know how often the Inventories are updated but I would bet that there are several collections listed on the inventories page that are no longer in existence. Black Diamond comes to mind. So any issues in that collection get counted as well as the issues in the collection of the person who bought them, if the person keeps an updated inventory. This would count the issues twice. I like doing this thought because it will really make everyone see how these issues are not rare. The only people in the world that would want this issue probably have at most 10% of all of the copies...say another 10% got destroyed(which is highly unlikely for this particualr issue since it probably went straight into a bag.) that still leaves 80% of the print run. Meaning that everyone who wants one can have one...shaxper wrote:As a last resort, if any user in the database doesn't post here, we'll include the figures from their inventory and assume they're up to date.
Thanks for the reminder

WHere did you get this info other than some Ebat seller saying it? It doesn't make any sense that the post office would allow mail to sit in the rain.shaxper wrote:Of course, there were all those copies damaged by rain when the books first shipped out. Did that take Valiant below 3,500, or did they just print more?

This is an apocryphal story that I have heard several times over the years by several disparate sources. I would guess it's probably true, because of the time and space between my hearing it, but I can't confirm it officially.x-omatic wrote:WHere did you get this info other than some Ebat seller saying it? Bob can probably confirm.

I heard it when i knew very little about valiant and hav never questioned it. The only evidence I can provide, apart from the fact that a lot of people know the story, is logic. The story explains why there were no extra copies of harbinger pink that were later released in another way ie to dealers like Magnus 0.ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:This is an apocryphal story that I have heard several times over the years by several disparate sources. I kind of remember the rain thing, but I bought 3 copies from a dutch auction on ebay in 1999 or 2000, I am pretty sure the seller was a female and I paid 14ea + shipping. The seller had a lot of copies, I don't remember how many, somehow 50ish comes to mind and I have always wondered where someone got that many of these, were they Valiant file copies, leftover at the printers or what? So at least one person had bulk copies of this book-does anyone else remember?

One other thing to consider is that Valiant *obviously* did not just print this book to coupon order, despite what they may claim. It just wouldn't make any sense, given that there was the possibility of damage, staff would want copies, etc etc etc.
It IS possible that they did an unmarked second printing, but that's highly doubtful, as second printings cost a HELL of a lot more money to print than, say, 500, 1000, or more extra of the first run.
So, yeah, I would guess they overaged the run to the tune of 500-1000 copies.
It doesn't make sense that they wouldn't.

At least 117 copies so far.
Incidentally, if you chose "More than 9" from the list, please include a post about how many you DO have.
The threshold trend is interesting to see here. Apparenly, after the third copy, most vc.comers can't stop themselves. You're statistically likely to have 0, 1, 2, or more than 9!

There's a line of thought that says...shaxper wrote:Apparenly, after the third copy, most vc.comers can't stop themselves. You're statistically likely to have 0, 1, 2, or more than 9!
"If the best book is BLAH, and I already own BLAH...
then I can either buy a copy of BLEH, which is not as good as BLAH,
or I can get another BLAH."
With Valiant, you've got a "finite" universe...
If your collecting habits are continuous, but your universe is finite,
it's inevitable that you will wind up with doubles, triples, etc., EVENTUALLY.
The question is whether you will taylor those duplicates to your favorite books.
I'd say a few of us do.
