No kidding, holy christ you guys know how to negotiate or deal with some very desperate buyers!nycjadie wrote:Wow! If $800 is high for 3000 decent books, I'm paying too much! Nice score!superman-prime wrote:about 3 months ago i hit a 3000 collection or so
paid 800 which was high but he let me look through it and it had a full nm run and spiderman 250 and up
so it paid out right there and i kept some of the stuff i wanted
got a invinible one i kept and a small stack of wd
it relly depends on what is in the lot
if its old dealer stock be weary but collections are great usually light dups and popular titles aplenty

Re: question about bulk buys...
bulk deals are normally fire sales and people motivated to sell i always let them start with a price and thats what he wanted and it was more then fair after i saw it it would have spent a lot on that deal

That's good, I have also realized that it's better to be picky because it seems like at least once a month a good opportunity to purchase a collection becomes available.superman-prime wrote:bulk deals are normally fire sales and people motivated to sell i always let them start with a price and thats what he wanted and it was more then fair after i saw it it would have spent a lot on that deal
I have another one I'm looking at, he's asking a crazy high $15k for 3k in books but there are a number of keys and sem-keys in there, ton of bronze stuff in there, some copper, some silver. He claims most are in really high grade, I'm not sure on that, but I came in around $1 a piece.

Re: question about bulk buys...
You know, the best collection I ever bought was $3500 for about 3000 books. It was way more than I wanted to spend, but I did talk him down from $10K+. It had a near full run of Hulk, lots of silver X-Men, FF and Avengers, etc. It had a near complete pre-Unity collection. I got a 9.6 Harbinger out of it. I was really worried for a long time that I wouldn't make my money back, but eventually I did, selling off the cheap stuff. The grade was very high on the newer books, and I'm still getting some 9.6 Nintendo books out of it, and a ton of 9.8 Valiant. You never know. I think this guy's price was so high, he scared off most people. He even drove all the books to me, which was a huge win as he lived 2 hours drive away. I often ask people to drive to a public place near me. You can often tell how desperate they are if they agree right awayGGSAE wrote:That's good, I have also realized that it's better to be picky because it seems like at least once a month a good opportunity to purchase a collection becomes available.superman-prime wrote:bulk deals are normally fire sales and people motivated to sell i always let them start with a price and thats what he wanted and it was more then fair after i saw it it would have spent a lot on that deal

Re: question about bulk buys...
Good idea to get people to drive closer, I'm not making any long drives any more without very good cause and some concession by the buyer. Update on that girl, last I left off she was *SQUEE* at my $1500 offer, stating "I'll get at least double that"! Looks like her buyer at 5k was false, and she re-posted the add at 3k, but in the description put $2500. LOL, why would anyone pay $3 when you say you'd take $2500. I'm getting a buddy to contact her, and maybe I can split the cost of the collection with him since I think I turned her off.nycjadie wrote:You know, the best collection I ever bought was $3500 for about 3000 books. Got lucky. Went to a house to see about 200 mid to low grade Bronze. Offered $100. She said she wanted $200. I said, why don't I pick a few out and make you on offer. Fine. I picked 50 books that included a lot of silver age marvel. Paid $60 (probably could have paid less) . I haven't screened then closely yet, but there is a $150+ copy of the first appearance of Moon Knight.

Re: question about bulk buys...
Awesome! I've been in comic-selling mode lately, and probably won't be purchasing any collections lately. I've been too busy with work, and after reading those posts-times I realize I should have spent more time on CFA studying, lol. Although the USD makes it very advantageous to sell on ebay these days.....nycjadie wrote:Got lucky. Went to a house to see about 200 mid to low grade Bronze. Offered $100. She said she wanted $200. Re: question about bulk buys...
Resurrecting this thread. I bought what is now my cheapest deal yet. 21 long boxes. One original owner. Probably 40 years of books. I bought it sight unseen. I didn't even look at them. After I moved them down a 3 floor walk up with my car double parked (cops hassled me) I did peek at one box for 5 seconds. It looks like 70s to present. Price? $150 total. Ridiculous. I will be digging for weeks, if not months.

Where do you find time to source these deals, sort, and unload the comics?nycjadie wrote:Resurrecting this thread. I bought what is now my cheapest deal yet. 21 long boxes. One original owner. Re: question about bulk buys...
I saw a post on Craigslist for 21 long boxes at $150 about an hour before I left work. The location was in the same city I lived in. I shot an email on my phone confirming that if the price was $150 for all, I could be there ASAP. I wondered if he meant $150 a longbox. This was all in the elevator down to the street.
I walked the 1 block to the train station, and by the time I came out the tunnel in Oakland, he emailed saying they were mine if I wanted them for $150, and he wanted to get them out within in the hour. A few texts later, it turns out I was only 1 mile from his apartment, and I met him right there. I know where he bought his comics. He was just a few blocks from Dr. Comics and Mister Games, in Oakland.
There is also a grocery bag of treasuries. I flipped through them long enough to see a VF- Superman vs. Muhammed Ali. The treasuries are all in VF or better shape. I wouldn't say NM. I'm going to enjoy the Muhammed Ali book. I've always wanted one.
I went through one longbox last night. J-L. The condition is astonishingly good considering it's unbagged. Lots of NM-. I listed some of the runs incredibly cheaply on eBay. I pulled aside about 6" of books for myself in the 1 box. Death of Superboy issues, .12 Adventure Comics run, the more valuable Superboy/Legion issues from the 70's. Nice stuff. I've already listed about $85 worth of books in that box alone, with a few more to go. I priced them so cheap, this box will probably pay for the whole lot.
This was just sheer luck. I apologized to my wife about the garage, which we just cleaned out after our move this summer. There are tons of boxes everywhere. Ironically, I just bought the last 3 1/2 longboxes of Valiant/Acclaim from my dealer source, so they're in there too, along with a ton of other boxes I need to get rid of cheap. Maybe a yard sale at some point?
I did miss on another collection over the weekend. I waited a few hours too long to respond to an inquiry I got. It was a 90 minute drive though, but apparently that guy had 14 longboxes of Bronze. Bummer! I've missed out on several collections like that by a hair, so this one feels really good.
I'm very eager to find the Spiderman and X-Men boxes! Also, I saw he had Acclaim in there. Fingers crossed he has an Armorines 2 and some Shadowman.

It's ridiculous. I have an event tonight, and am bummed I won't have time to go through another box! I think I'm going to press a few of the keys. They should at least come out as 8.5. Fingers crossed.
The DC Super Stars is also apparently the first Bronze Age Earth 2 appearance of Huntress as Helena Wayne. I wasn't aware of this key before.
