Re: DC Relaunch Story Discussions ONLY (no market info or sp
I'm so far behind on my reading, it's not funny... I've now finished Justice League #1 and Action Comics #1. I actually enjoyed Justice League, but did NOT like Action Comics. I like my Superman fighting for Truth, Justice, and the American way, not fighting for "social justice" or being someone who doesn't believe the law should work "the same for rich and poor alike" or After reading Action Comics #1, I find myself siding with Lex. Plus, the art was very sub-par. I expect better from Rags Morales.
And the only way I can read any of this and maintain my sanity is to see this "New 52" as a completely different universe/continuity. The old DC ended with Flashpoint #5. An all-new version of the DC Universe started with Justice League #1. Some of the same events might have happened in both universes and those events might be mentioned or referenced occasionally, but it's not the same universe. That's the only way it makes any kind of sense.

I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

All Star Western
This was on my radar, but thanks to the OTV dudes, I tracked it down. Glad I did. This was excellent. One of my favorites along with Animal Man.
Awesome art, interesting story. Recommend!

I've been trying to spread the word on this one. Definitely one of the best titles DC puts out now.400yrs wrote:All Star Western

I think you misunderstand the second part. Supes was commenting on the unfairness of the enforcement of the laws and how the Glenmorgan character was able to break the law without repercussion. He wasn't condoning two sides of the law, just pointing it out. The entire exchange was as confusing as hell.Heath wrote:I like my Superman fighting for Truth, Justice, and the American way, not fighting for "social justice" or being someone who doesn't believe the law should work "the same for rich and poor alike"
The original Golden Age Superman was basically a socialist avenger, so if they are trying to recreate the feel and tone of the early stuff I'm ok with that. The Truth, Justice and American Way stuff came about a bit later. Not sure if Morrison is going to address that or not.
I agree that the issue sucked pretty hard and reading it made the decision to drop Action Comics after 20+ years a lot easier than I expected it to be.
Have you (or anyone else) read Supergirl? It's easily the title I'm looking forward to reading most each month. Tons of action and awesome. Artwork is tremendous, too.

I was looking forward to checking out the Mahmud Asrar art, but I've heard it from several sources, not just OTV, that this whole thing was one scene. I can't pay $3 for that. I read that scene again and I'm still not sure. Supes is holding the guy in the air over a balcony and the cops tell Supes to put him down. He says he will as soon as Glenmorgan confesses "to someone who believes the law works the same for rich and poor alike... because that ain't Superman!" (from memory as I don't have the book in front of me). He then tortures the guy to coerce a confession. How was what he did any different from waterboarding?Tim wrote:I think you misunderstand the second part. Read Batman #1 last night. It was ok. Nothing spectacular.

In his first ever story Superman leaves a woman (apparently who has confessed to a murder) bound and gagged outside the Govenor's Mansion in which he breaks into after being denied entry - manhandles the Govenor's personal butler - breaks into the Govenor's bedroom to demand he reads the note. The butler then produces a gun and shoots Superman to defend the Govenor only to have Superman take his weapon away. Later he confronts a hood and then drags him outside and carries him along electrical wires and even tries to make the guy believe that they might get electrocuted and then leaps from building to building all while trying to get a confession out of him.
So the new Action Comics wasn't too far off from the original Action Comics.

How can illegals make illegal birth certificates for their immigrant son in a stolen land?

I liked issue #2 a bit more than issue #1, it felt like there was a bit more in issue #2 than there was in issue #1 (granted, I liked the story that was in issue #1, I just thought it was atrociously short). It is basically Supergirl and Superman confronting each other, and Supergirl's confusion leading to lots of punching. Supergirl's costume was drawn with the "bikini wax required" aspect toned down quite a bit, too, which was refreshing.chisumwomack wrote:Yeah, I heard more than one person say they liked it, but I thought it was horrible.400yrs wrote:I was looking forward to checking out the Mahmud Asrar art, but I've heard it from several sources, not just OTV, that this whole thing was one scene. Aquaman #2 - 4/5 - Story was good. Art was Awesome.
My only complaint is that this was a very quick read and the story didn't do much to progress the characters of Aquaman and Mera.

All Star Western #2:
The main story was good. The art by Moritat was excellent. That alone was worth the $3.99 price. The colors are absolutely spectacular as well.
The back-up story about El Diablo was fine, but I still have problems with back-ups running in books for an additional dollar. It's very possible to tell a good 8 page story, but it's nearly impossible to deliver a good 8 page story every month. It just doesn't work. It didn't work for Marvel and it didn't work for DC the first time around. Why bother doing it again? I'd rather have the main story only at $2.99.
Although I've enjoyed all of the #2 issues I've read, there is a marked drop-off in the books I've read thus far - Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing, All Star Western, Aquaman. They were all solid 4/5s, but no 5/5s this go round. Wonder Woman was probably the best of them (maybe a 4.5). Swamp Thing was good, but too damn wordy. All Star Western and Aquaman were beautiful, but were quick reads.
I have yet to receive the two books I was really excited about - Animal Man and Batman. So maybe those two will deliver where the others did not. They are written by writers that I trust sooooo...

Re: DC Relaunch Story Discussions ONLY (no market info or sp
It has been a comic reading morning and I have a few DC reviews:
Aquaman #2 - (4/5) I liked this issue. The creatures from the black lagoon show up and do some crazy stuff. Aquaman continues to show humility and an almost lack of self confidence/self-worth. I am not sure I like that. I plan on continuing to read this series.
I, Vampire #2 - I like it because I have a bias toward vampire stories. Otherwise this series would not be good enough for me to keep reading. I am on the fence.
Batwoman #2 (3.5/5) I like this series. The art completely fascinates me. The story is good, but slow. I am not sure if I like the slow drive of the story. I am still trying to figure this one out, but enjoying the ride. I plan on continuing to read this series.

Okay, I was really on the fence as to whether to give some of the new DC books a try or not. My initial pull list reads/read:
Justice League - improved with issue 2
Justice League International - feels okay, but nothing really ground-breaking
Captain Atom - a messy mash-up of several iterations of the Captain Atom characetr; a book lacking any obvious direction - dropped after 2 issues
Static Shock - not as much fun as I hoped; I know it won't be Milestone 2.0, but still I hoped since I like both writer and artist
Hawk and Dove - more fun than I hoped for!
Legion of Superheroes - painfully over-burdened by its own convoluted history; very slow and unformed start in my opinion
Legion Lost - this has 1 or 2 issues to return the supposedly killed characters before I may lose interest
Mister Terrific - okay story, but the art really puts me off; and a poor redsign - the 90's costume remains a classic
Blue Beetle - this just feels like a total re-tread of stuff i read in the last volume; may be dropped as a consequence unless it offers something novel soon
Teen Titans - this was not supposed to be on my list, my LCS popped it in due to me reading all of the last volume; dropped after 1 issue - awful
And with month 2 I added the Shade mini; THUNDER Agents will follow, as may The Ray.

Still enjoying Supergirl tremendously and also Aquaman and Red Hood and the Outlaws.
Sad to say that Flash is dropped as of this month. Gave it two issues, but it's just plain boring. Period.
So, I dropped around 18-19 DC Books and am down to three, but considering I vowed to buy zero, that's not too bad I don't think.

Animal Man #2 - 5/5 - This book is great!! Family, mystery, horror, humor. This book has everything. I don't care for the covers so far, but I love the interior art.
Batman #2 - 3.5/5 - Story was fine. I had some issues with the artwork / coloring. I had to look a bit too much to figure out what was happening on some panels.

400yrs wrote: Flash - This is my favorite DC character. What I liked about this issue was that it was a first issue. What I didn't like about this issue was the art. I really don't like the soft line look. I also didn't really like the story at the end. I feel like I've read this before. Considering that it's an artist that is writing the book, I doubt this will turn out to be a strong story. I don't think I'll be continuing on with this. B-
Here's another one of those times where I will talk to myself.

I re-read Flash #1. This time, I read it much slower and took my time looking over the art. I liked it much more. I'd still give it about a B though. I've gotten over the fact that Wally isn't the Flash right now as well.
However, I also read Flash #2. This was among the best of the #2 issues I've read. Except for Animal Man #2, all the other #2s were a marked drop-off from the first issue. Flash #2 was much better than #1. The art / storytelling in this issue was fantastic. It's the kind of book that I flipped back and forth on. I love those kinds of books.
There were several pages in Flash #2 with some fantastic layouts and storytelling. Great stuff!
I'll be adding Flash to my dcbs orders.

My DC pull books before New 52:
- nothing
My anticipated pull list after the announcement of the New 52:
- Animal Man
- Batman
My current DC pull list:
- All Star Western
- Animal Man
- Aquaman
- Batman
- Flash
- Swamp Thing
- Wonder Woman
I'm guessing that the first ones I will end up cutting are All Star Western (it's 3.99 and the back ups will likely wear me down) and Wonder Woman.
People are saying really good things about Batman #3. This is when I hate mail order, but oh well.
