You had me at Mike Grell. :D

Note to self: How the hell did you forget to include Mike Grell in your list? You lousy son of a *SQUEE* :!:
I'd be surprised to see any VALIANT alumni art on books unless it's a cover or fill in issue but I guess you never really know, I have no idea what kind of plans there are. It would be nice to see some BWS covers early on though to tie the old and the new together, it would pander to us old guys (speaking for myself) and show some of the younger new fans what we were so excited about 20 years ago.

Mike Leeke did me a fine X-O commission after his passing

He's still got it! Leeke would be a good choice. BWS for a cover??! Sure why not??!

Bob Hall IS Shadowman. Wait until you see the art he did for our Shadowman project. He's still got it too :thumb:

Let's be honest, it's really the GK 1. Solar.

Magnus is from the future, so he has no impact on the past or present.
Turok is from no where... the Lost Land.

If you lose those two, you really haven't lost anything about Valiant... except those two.

Gilad or some sort of "being behind the Darque Power/DP as its own thing", maybe.
Funny you should mention Gilad, while I was just reading this quote from Executive Editor Warren Simons from yesterday: "a guy like Eternal Warrior -- I cannot wait for you to see what we’re doing with him. I mean, the possibilities are seemingly limitless for a character like that. And how he ties into the Universe...wait...I’m getting ahead of myself here."

That sounds to me like Eternal Warrior is KEY to all aspects of the universe. :hm:
Yep, I was thinking the same thing about EW ... makes total sense. I can't wait to see what's in store for Master Darque as well :hm:

That would be awesome for sure. Hopefully enough time has passed where Barry can put aside the bad vibes he has for Valiant. I'm not holding my breath though.....

I would love to see some older artits, like Totleben, Bolland, or Gibbons, that would be awesome! Any chance at BWS returning?

I really doubt BWS ever returns to comics.

Stranger things have happened. As we get older, we tend to become a little more pliable and at some point he may want to revisit some of the characters he worked with in the past, because he wants to, not because he has to. You never really know till someone asks.

You dont, if you use Rai 0 and the Harbinger Wars as the backdrop of the VEI universe.

The neat thing about Gilad is because he is "eternal", if you write a story about 19th century New Orleans, you can put him in it, or 4000AD Rai, he fits, or 2012, or 1993, or well....you get the idea. Think about those early EW stories with the filler backstory about something that he was involved with centuries before the current story began, and how that incident he was involved with in said backstory fits the rest of the story... Gilad is like Ivar without the time machine....

much more succinctly said:

Ifanboy.com had a very interesting article on some of the creators who worked at DC who don't currently have a spot on one of the upcoming DC relaunch books.

http://www.ifanboy.com/content/articles ... e_Creators

I was quite surprised by some of the names on the list. I thought it might be fun to match some up with some Valiant books. If I'm not familiar with the work, I'll just skip them.

James Robinson (writer) - X-O Manowar - Robinson can deal with the best characters.

Scott Kolins (artist) - Shadowman - This would be a much lighter, more cartoony Shadowman visually, but it could work.

Jamal Igle (artist) - Harbinger - He did some work on Noble Causes which I enjoyed. He can do a team book without having to rely on typical super hero costumes.

Bryan Q. Miller (artist) - ?

Mike Norton (artist) - ?

Jock (artist) - Rai / Bloodshot. I'd have a wet dream if they could get Jock on covers or interiors.

Brian Wood (writer) - not sure where he would fit in Valiant. Excels with political themes.

Nicola Scott (artist) - ?

Chris Roberson (writer) - wrote Fables stuff like Cinderella - Ninjak

Phil Hester (writer & artist) - Phil Hester can do anything.

Amanda Conner (artist) - ?

Matthew Sturges (writer) - ?

Adam Beechen - ?

Don Kramer (artist) - ?

Paul Dini (writer) - Rai/Bloodshot, Ninjak

Kelly Sue DeConnick (writer) - ?

Dustin Nguyen (artist) - X-O

if he's good with politics, how about Brian Shaw on Rai? The politics in Magnus and Rai were my favorites parts in the future issues of Valiant and that all but disappeared in the post-Shooter era.

Maybe I just missed this on the board, but take a look at who Bob Hall lists as his employer on Facebook and who he is employed "with" there!

I guess it's possible that he is referring to the old valiant, but he has done alot more work for Marvel and DC before and after valiant and he doesn't list them as employers. :?

The question is whether you really need one. :hm:
I was thinking about this the other day, and there is no real easy answer, IMO. It really all depends on the direction that the company wants to take Valiant.

Solar was critical initially, because he was a "cause" of the Valiant Universe. Prior to Solar, Valiant was (basically) our universe. As such, Solar was responsible for all characters, altered history, powers, etc.

The way I look at it, there are three options that VEI can take.

Option 1 - Continue on from the Valiant Universe (either as it would be in 2012, or post Unity, or post 1999, or whatever). In this case, Solar is not critical, because the Valiant Universe already exists. He isn't needed to create one, he isn't needed to reboot it. Yes, he played an integral role, yes he would be a nice character to have around, but he isn't "required". His job is done.

Option 2 - Start from scratch and create a new "superpowered" universe. While I don't like this option (it is basically a huge retcon, and possible not even "real" Valiant) he isn't needed here, either. In re-creating the Valiant Universe, you can have some other explanation as to the origin of the universe/superheroes.

Option 3 - Reboot the existing Valiant Universe through a Solar-type being. This is one that we have talked about many times here. Solar wipes out universe and starts over (or something similar, maybe through the lost land). Or maybe he starts "over" from 1993 or something. However, in this scenario, you don't need Solar exactly, you can have any similarly powerful being (Erica Pierce or Destroyer come to mind). So again, Solar isn't necessary.

(In fact, if the super-powered being is Erica Pierce, that would be a nice explanation as to why the universe would be rebooted from Unity - that is when she came to prominence.

In none of those is Solar mandatory. Yes, he would be nice to have, but either his role is fulfilled, his role may not be needed, or another can fill his role (in terms of universe creation).

Chris

I just read Eternal Warrior #34 by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema. It was good. These two also did some really good work on Star Wars Legacy, which was basically a brand new, ground floor book. Both of these creators have kind of fallen off the map work-wise the last few months which makes me wonder. :hm:

They are older creators though. If VEI is going with some experienced, older creators, it wouldn't surprise me if these guys pop up, particularly Duursema because her art fits what I'd expect from the new Valiant in some ways and she still does good stuff. She draws really good, distinguished, consistent human faces. This is going to be important to VEI. You can't just get dudes like Bagley that draw great masks, but all the faces look the same.

If they are going the newer, younger route (which is mainly what I'm hoping for with some vets mixed in), not so much.

I believe John Ostrander has Glaucoma and that is probably why you haven't heard from him in a while. Loved his work on The Spectre for DC!

Speaking of illustrators and not writers, here's a few guys I wouldn't mind seeing do some work for VEI, be it ongoing, one-shots or miniseries:

Paul Guillory
Charles Adlard
Mark Buckingham
Sergio Arragones
Steve Rude (given other issues, maybe not but he could use the work)
Bob Hall (hey, I LIKED his art)
H.M.Baker
Scott Benefiel
Matt Haley
Christian Zanier
Ryan Benjamin
Javier Saltares
Don Perlin (if he still does work)

Charles Adlard - I think the only thing I ever saw him draw is Mars Attacks way back when. He seemed good though
Mark Buckingham - I remember him as an inker...didn't know he does pencils now.
Sergio Arragones - I have never seen him do anything other than Groo :)
Steve Rude (given other issues, maybe not but he could use the work) - He would be awesome
Bob Hall (hey, I LIKED his art) - Would be awesome if he got to do shadowman again
H.M.Baker - Not familiar with him
Scott Benefiel - Not familiar with him
Matt Haley - Remember him from Dark Horse, was a solid artist
Christian Zanier - Not familiar with him
Ryan Benjamin - Not familiar with him
Javier Saltares - Remember him from some Dark Horse licensed stuff. Was not bad, but not great either.
Don Perlin - Would be awesome to see him do Valiant stuff again

I would add John Dixon and Jackson Guice to the above. Both guys did great work on various titles for Valiant. I was a big fan of Mike Leeke way back when as well...he was actually my favorite XO artist even though he only had a short stint.
