I had to laugh at Hobo's Surfer 4 auctions...
One, in 8.0, sold for $260.
The other, a 7.5, $187.
A STATISTICALLY INSIGINIFICANT DIFFERENCE resulted in a WHOPPING FORTY PERCENT PRICE DIFFERENCE!
And....on any given day, BOTH books could EASILY get the OTHER'S grade.
Too funny.
People buying the number, not the book.

I thought there was normally a noticeable difference between 7.5 and 8.0s? Like the 7.5 looks noticeably uglier?ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:I had to laugh at Hobo's Surfer 4 auctions...

There MAY be a discernable difference between those specific copies, but it's a quarter grade.
Quite literally, and quite easily, the 8.0 could have been a 7.5 and the 7.5 could have been an 8.0, had they been graded on a different day (each.) It's also possible that the 8.0 was really a weak 8.5, and the 7.5 was a strong 7.0. No one can know until they're resubmitted.
In EITHER event....an 8.0 SHOULD NOT sell for 40% more than a 7.5....
People buying the numbers. That's all it is.

Buy the BOOK, not the GRADE. Look at the book, and check it out. If it's a STRONG 7.5, buy it!cobra_commander wrote:Man I'm really a bit tempted to go for a SS #4 in 7.5 if thatgs really the case... oh decisionsZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:A VF vs. VF-?cobra_commander wrote:I thought there was normally a noticeable difference between 7.5 and 8.0s? The FF#57 was really a VF- and I was going to toss it but intended up giving it to a friend of mine instead who happened to be jusy tacross thr room from me while the nearest trash can was in the next room
I just copped these:
I'm not sure what the hell the Monterey collection is, but I can't resist two of my favorite characters on a bronze cover:

#14? Is that the high wire cover? I'm at work and don't have references. If so, it's one of my favorite covers. I can understand throwing away a low grade Arion #16....but FF #57 in VF-?

It was just one of those things. I saw the cover, knew I wanted to start GA somewhere to get used to non-semi NM books, and knew this was a book I had to have - because I just fell in love with the cover. Matthew 19:26 Retconned, huh?
Yeah, I've bid on some 43s in the past, but never got 'em. That and #42 are a BEAR to get. I've even owned a #47, but ZERO 42s and 43s.
