Yep. The new pages/covers they've shown definitely combine classic "darque symbols" with something like circuitry.MarrowMan wrote:So Necromancy is tied into that somewhere yes?greg wrote:Since two different interviews have mentioned it...
This interview says "magic and mysticism" aren't what people are expecting... and another interview mentioned Arthur C. Clarke.
That tells me that they're referencing: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." -Arthur C. Clarke
SO...
Master Darque and Shadowman are not using "magic"... they've tapped into an advanced technology.
Archer & Armstrong pages have shown us "the Boon" from "the faraway" that destroys life on Earth.
Now... where in the Valiant universe would these "magical" advanced technologies have come from? The Vine!
Advanced technology indistinguishable from magic.

I REALLY Dig that idea!

Reminds me of the concept albums of Fear Factory, mostly regarding the merging of Man/Machine/Technology Perfect music to listen to when I'm reading ShadowMan in November,

Welcome to the boards Patch, I'm a big fan of your art, I loved Mystery Men, and I'm really looking forward to Shadowman...Patch wrote:Hey Valianteers,
I'm Patch Zircher the co-writer and artist for Shadowman. Hi! I'm really excited about our upcoming stories and think you're going to dig them. Though I had read some Shadowman issues years ago, I've recently been tearing through many more. They're rich with ideas and great characters. Justin, Warren, and I are inspired by them but we won't be simply copying them. I do think you'll feel that there are a lot of similarities between the classic character and today's Shadowman.
I also want to share with you the inspiration for a new Shadowman weapon, the Sengese Blade. Here are pics (photos copyrighted by T.Hamilton) of actual, traditional Sengese weapons, used in dances and rituals in West Africa:

The art and character designs are sick, I love it, of course everything needs to balance out storywise but, man, I can't wait to get my hands on this book...FormerReader wrote:agent_graves wrote:Can't wait, I feel like this will be the best of all the relaunched books...

Sounds cool and secondedgrendeljd wrote:Cheers to that!! Welcome aboard!!!Patch wrote:Thanks for the welcome.
I'm only going to be dropping in from time to time because, frankly, it takes a HEAP of hours to make the book.
Also, I don't want to change the conversational tone of the board. Praise, pan, rave, rant, make guesses, shoot 'em down; carry the fandom torch-- it's the same stuff I'd do if I wasn't making the books.
On the process of the redesign-- everything's there for a reason (between myself and other artists, we created a dozen designs). If you'll look at the angles of the mask, they reflect the angles in the chest emblem-- and the emblem is there because it's an icon of the character and will continue to be over time.
Those angles are repeated in the triangular pouch buckles. The pouches aren't superfluous. Think of them as modern Gris-gris.
Anyway, I'll say too much if I keep going.
I love that you're excited about Shadowman and here's to a long, long run!

Re: ShadowMan!
Yvel (Guchiet?) was one of my favorite VH1 artists. Nice to see the new work paying tribute to that very memorable cover!BugsySig wrote:Yes, I do...It also reminds me of this...Crow331 wrote:Anyone notice something familiar on the walls in this Shadowman page?![]()
Patch, LOVE the new costume design. Never was a fan of shadowman's light blue one piece (a little to super-hero for me), or Bob Hall's (god bless em) "I'm a tough biker guy" leather coat look.
Your designs modernize him nicely. I immediately wanted to build that staff. What a halloween costume that would make.
Looking forward to the book!

Me too! He did the cover to EW#4 correct? It was one of my favorite covers.
Re: ShadowMan!
The Shadowman mask cover and the EW #4 are the 2 best VH1 covers imo.
Glad to see there was a reason behind the weapon design that compliments the character.

Re: ShadowMan!
No idea how I've missed this thread. Gotta be honest I didn't like the first look dark image of Shadowman AND (here comes the sacrilige) didn't love the vh1 version either, so wasn't that kean for him to return. BUT some of this is looking hella cool particularly the links between mysticism and technology (which will help to tie Shadowman to X-O and Bloodshot or a future Rai) and the pages are also looking cool!

Wasn't sure, so I just googled it. Looks like the same style, but I don't see YVEL anywhere on that cover. There is "Cowan" at the bottom left, seen here:FormerReader wrote:Carson wrote: Yvel (Guchiet?) was one of my favorite VH1 artists.

Re: ShadowMan!
If you are a fan of Yvel, our very own Craig and Stu are currently working with him on the new book, Man of God. The last issue I picked up was # 2-I think # 3 should be coming soon, if not just out now-and it's been neat. Three stories in one book. Extra length. Including a one page backup written by Craig with art by Bob Hall.FormerReader wrote:Carson wrote: Yvel (Guchiet?) was one of my favorite VH1 artists.
