I know what you mean, but on the other hand I enjoy having to think for myself and figuring out cost vs benefit on the stuff I buy. I end up with a better collection of comics that way. If I had cash to roll with the hive mind, I might have even more crap sitting around cluttering my house more.Brother J wrote: I envy you guys who are so diehard that you buy everything VALIANT related and don't worry a whole lot about the cost.
Did I just say "hive mind"?

I'm in! But then again, I've only been spending ~$20ish dollars a month on comics lately due to a financial crush myself. This book isn't even set for release until the spring when things will hopefully be better.
I'm hoping we can get the X-O book above that stupid Watchmen spot on Amazon's top 100 graphic novels...
Does this mean all the back issue prices on e-bay are going to go crazy again?

There is nothing wrong with that point of view. Certainly any of us with wives and/or kids know the drill of balancing our "wants" against the budget. I think what causes some board members to want to kick some posters in the crotch is when the post about why you're not buying contains negative comments about the material, criticism of VEI's relaunch strategy or statements that would seem to imply that anyone who bought it is stupid for one reason or another. There were a lot of posts like that with the Harby HC and there have already been a few like that with the X-O HC.Brother J wrote: Again, it's not that the book isn't worth the full price or that I don't want to support VEI wholeheartedly, it's just that like everyone else, I have to do what feels right in each situation. To me, it is hard to justify paying $25+ for a new short story and reprints, no matter how nice the product is.
Different strokes baby. Some of can afford $25 for anything and some of us can't. Some of us prefer to read/store HCs and some of us prefer the comic format. Some of consider only the new material to have value and some of us like re-reading the old stuff too. Some of us like the recolored art and some of us don't. You get the picture.
There is nothing wrong with posting a different viewpoint and somebody shouldn't get kicked in the crotch for doing that as long as they are respectful of others whose viewpoints differ from their own.
I'm not talking about you personally Brother J. I don't remember your post.

How'saboutTHAT!At the end of the Saturday panel VEI announced that the next hardcover was going to be X-O Manowar and that non other than Bob Layton would be writing the new story. After the panel Aric Dacia business cards were handed out. The reverse side of the card promotes the new hard cover.

$20 for five pages of new material in the Harbinger volume was almost more than I could stand. If it wasn't Shooter, I wouldn't have done it.
An X-O #0? What does that run me? $0.25 if I'm overpaying. A copy of X-O TPB? $3 on eBay. I could be really fancy and buy the Blue variant for $6. That means if I could find X-0 #5 and #6 for less than $16.75, I would save money. AND I wouldn't have to be subjected to anything written by the guy who brought us X-O #68.
*gasp*
I realize how blasphemous this is to say on these boards, and I know that VEI is "fighting the good fight." And when they start coming out with new material, anything really (ok, anything not by Layton), I'll be happy to give it a shot. But endless reprints are pointless. And please, the new coloring is not that good. And even if it were, $20 for coloring?
Just thought I'd share a point of view that many of us hold back because we have better things to do than get kicked in the crotch for having an opinion that differs.

Shocking. But very apt given the poster in Disguise.

Well, I for one think this is FRICKIN' AWESOME!
Bob Layton is the person I most think of when the name X-O is mentioned. I am excited about the new story written by Bob and at the very least the cover art being done by Sean Chen. With any luck maybe Sean will be able to do the interior art as well.
However, if Sean is unable to do the interior art for the book I would nominate some of my favorite X-O pencilers from the past - Bart Sears, Mike Leeke, Andy Smith or Jim Calafiore. I like all their work, though Bart is either hit or miss. I REALLY like his work when he is on, but sometimes he draws characters with Liefeld-ish proportions and I am not really into that. My personal choice from that bunch would have to be Andy Smith. I think his X-O stuff of the time was the best overall - he was a great student of Bart's work and did not go off the deep end with the proportions as Bart has done from time to time.
As far as the new story goes - I think there are a LOT of possibilities. It could be about the origin of the X-O armor, the origin of the Spider Aliens, a tale of Aric of Dacia meeting the Spider Aliens BEFORE he was captured with them possibly seeing something special in him (the reason for keeping him around for all the years on the ship) or maybe an untold tale from pre-unity or from the time in the lost land. There are lots of great possibilities and I am sure Bob Layton will craft a great tale!
Since there are no coupons to be colored for X-O I would hope there would be some cool pinup quality pages as well added to the book. That is of course assuming that the book will be around the same number of pages as the Harbinger hardcover. With any luck it will be longer.
In summation I am happy that X-O is the next on the reprint list and that Bob Layton and Sean Chen are working on it. I look forward to it being released around my birthday as well - a nice present from VEI to me!

ok let's be realistic here...essentially we are paying $25 for books we already own...again.
and yes, i wasn't a fan of the coloring on the harbinger hardcover...
however.
the way i'm looking at this is that we're investing in the future of VEI.
without support now from old fans and new it could hinder their future ability to produce new valiant material...and that's one thing i think we all want.
if nothing else, the profits (if there are any to speak of) can go towards their fight against VIP.
so for me personally, this isn't about the book...it's about helping secure the future of valiant comics, supporting dinesh (who's one of our own) in his efforts as much as possible, and sticking a gigantic middle finger right in VIP's face.
so yeah...sign me the frak up.

Um, no.
Does this sound like DF1 to you?

It just sounds like a board member who wanted to state an unpopular opinion without dealing with the social fallout that often follows.

That's why I've always supported Valiant/Acclaim. At least copy of everything. Two copies of my faves (Q&W, EWs, Darque). Five copies of Bloodshot. I mean--what else would I spend the $$ on? Food? Petrol?cinlach@aol.com wrote:the way i'm looking at this is that we're investing in the future of VEI.

But I don't know if I'll be able to swing 5 Bloodshot HCs. If the VEI folks can give plenty o' notice, I can mebbe sell a kidney in time to place my multiple orders...

I think the new hardcovers are a great idea There are quite a few comic fans who still do not know anything about Valiant. Releasing new reprints with an original story is a cool way to introduce the current generation to the Valiant U. The only problem I have is the fact none of the lcs's in my area ordered the new Harbinger HC. The same will probably hold true for the X-O HC. That equals zero dollars from the Pittsburgh market to support Dino and crew. That's a shame.
